U.S. Consulate Casablanca: Passports, Visas, and Citizen Services

The U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca handles nearly every routine consular service for Americans and Moroccan visa applicants in the country, including passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, notarials, and both immigrant and non-immigrant visas.¹ The Embassy in Rabat focuses on diplomatic work and does not offer routine public services. The Consulate sits at 8 Boulevard Moulay Youssef and runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.² Every service requires a scheduled appointment.

Because the Consulate observes both American and Moroccan public holidays, closure days pile up faster than most visitors expect — roughly 20 in 2026, with the Islamic dates approximate because they follow the lunar calendar. Check the Consulate’s holiday calendar before booking travel around your appointment.³

Getting In: Entry and Security Rules

Screening at the entrance is similar to an airport checkpoint. The Consulate recommends limiting jewelry and metal items to move through faster.⁴

Electronic devices — cell phones, laptops, portable music players — are not allowed inside. Small cubbies at the entrance are available for electronics, but the Consulate accepts no responsibility for lost items. Nothing else on the prohibited list has any storage option, so anything you cannot bring in must stay at your hotel or in your vehicle. Prohibited items include:

Weapons and weapon-like objects: firearms, knives, pepper spray, explosives, metal razors, nail clippers, and scissors
Flammable items such as lighters and other accelerants
Large bags; only small hand-carried bags are permitted
Liquids and food, including perfumes, gels, aerosols, and any food items
Sealed envelopes or packages

Security staff can also prohibit other items at their discretion, and showing up with a banned item can cost you the appointment.⁴

Passport Services

Which Form You Use

In Morocco, you must apply in person rather than by mail.⁵ Which form you use depends on your history. Use Form DS-82 if your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 or older, bears your current name (or you can document any name change), and was issued within the last 15 years.⁶ Use Form DS-11 if you are a first-time applicant, your previous passport expired more than 15 years ago, or you were under 16 when it was issued.⁷

Complete your form with the State Department’s online Form Filler and print it. Handwritten applications are only accepted if the Form Filler has technical issues.⁷ Do not sign a DS-11 until a consular officer tells you to. You also need one passport photo, 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), on a white or off-white background.⁸

Lost or Stolen Passports

If your passport is lost or stolen in Morocco, appear in person at the Consulate and apply for a replacement with Form DS-11. Bring a photo, any available identification (a driver’s license or a photocopy of the missing passport helps), proof of citizenship if you have it, and your travel itinerary. A police report is recommended, and details of the loss or theft should go on your application.⁹

If you have imminent travel, the Consulate can issue an emergency passport valid for up to one year. In most cases, a replacement is ready the next business day, and you can later exchange it for a full-validity passport. Victims of serious crime or disaster who cannot pay may qualify for a free emergency passport with limited validity.⁹

Consular Report of Birth Abroad

If your child is born in Morocco and qualifies for U.S. citizenship through you, the Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is the document that establishes that citizenship. File Form DS-2029 through the State Department’s online e-CRBA system before the child turns 18.¹⁰

The process starts online. You upload the child’s Moroccan birth certificate, medical records from the birth, and evidence that the U.S. citizen parent spent enough time physically present in the United States to transmit citizenship. After the upload, the child and both parents attend an in-person interview at the Consulate with all originals and photocopies. Replacing or amending a CRBA later costs $50; the initial application fee is separate and is on the State Department’s consular fee schedule.¹¹

Notarial Services

The Consulate notarizes documents intended for use in the United States, such as affidavits and powers of attorney. Each seal is $50, payable in U.S. dollars or the Moroccan dirham equivalent on the day of your appointment.¹²

Bring the complete, unsigned document. Every page must be included, even pages that do not need a signature or seal. You also need a valid government-issued photo ID with a name matching the documents. If the service needs a witness, bring your own. Consular staff cannot serve as witnesses.¹²

Non-Immigrant Visas

If you are a Moroccan citizen or resident applying for temporary entry to the United States for tourism, business, or study, the process has three steps:

Complete Form DS-160 online through the State Department’s Consular Electronic Application Center, then print and keep the barcode confirmation page.¹³
Pay the Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee. It is non-refundable and varies by category; for B-1/B-2 visitor visas, it is $185. Pay through the authorized online system or a designated local bank before booking your interview.
Schedule your interview at the Casablanca Consulate. You must apply in the country where you normally live.¹⁴

Bring all required originals to the interview. The scheduling system also lets you choose a delivery address and track your passport afterward. Missing documents or errors on the DS-160 can force a reschedule, which usually means paying the fee again and waiting for a new slot.

Interview Waiver for Renewals

As of October 2025, the State Department narrowed the categories eligible to skip the in-person interview. You may qualify if you are renewing a B-1, B-2, or B-1/B-2 visa that was issued for full validity, you were at least 18 when it was issued, and the prior visa expired within the past 12 months. The same waiver applies to H-2A agricultural worker visas under the same conditions.¹⁵

To qualify, you must apply in your country of nationality or usual residence, have no prior refusal that was not overcome or waived, and have no apparent ineligibility. Even if you meet every criterion, a consular officer can still require an in-person interview.¹⁵

Immigrant Visas

Casablanca processes immigrant visas for family-based petitions, employment-based petitions, and Diversity Visa lottery cases.¹⁶ Unlike non-immigrant cases, immigrant visa files are routed to the Consulate by the National Visa Center after petition approval, so you do not schedule the initial interview yourself.

Medical Examination

Every immigrant visa applicant, regardless of age, completes a medical exam before the interview. Only physicians accredited by the Consulate may perform it; results from other doctors are not accepted. Finish the exam at least one week before your interview date, or your interview will be rescheduled.¹⁶

The physical exam costs 700 dirhams for adults and 500 dirhams for children under 15, with extra charges for blood tests, X-rays, and any required vaccinations. Pay the physician directly. Bring your visa interview appointment letter, passport, four recent passport-sized color photos, the DS-260 confirmation page, and a copy of your immunization records. For applicants 15 and older, the exam includes a chest X-ray, blood tests, and a gonorrhea test in addition to the physical and mental health evaluation. Tuberculosis testing is required for anyone two and older. All approved panel physicians in Morocco speak French, Arabic, and English. Schedule with only one physician.¹⁶

DNA Testing When Requested

If the Consulate asks for DNA testing to verify a biological relationship in a family case, the U.S. petitioner selects and pays an AABB-accredited laboratory. The lab ships the kit directly to the Consulate, which then contacts the applicant in Morocco to schedule sample collection. A designated physician collects the sample at the Consulate with an officer present, and the kit goes back to the lab in a pre-paid envelope. It is never released to the applicant or any third party. Results must show at least 99.5 percent certainty to be accepted.¹⁷

Common Fees and How to Pay

For immigrant visa fees due on the day of the interview, the Consulate accepts U.S. dollars and Moroccan dirhams, in cash or by credit card.¹⁶ For U.S. citizen services like notarials, the fee is set in U.S. dollars and paid in the dirham equivalent.¹² Non-immigrant visa MRV fees go through the online system or designated local banks before your interview.

Adult passport book renewal (DS-82): $130
Adult first-time passport book (DS-11): $130 application fee plus $35 acceptance fee
Child passport book (under 16): $100 application fee plus $35 acceptance fee
Notary seal: $50 per seal
CRBA replacement or amendment: $50
Immigrant visa medical exam: 700 MAD adults, 500 MAD children under 15, plus lab and vaccination costs
B-1/B-2 visitor visa MRV fee: $185

Fees are set by the State Department and change from time to time. Confirm current amounts on the Consulate website before your appointment.¹⁸

Emergencies Involving U.S. Citizens

For after-hours emergencies involving a U.S. citizen, call +212-537-63-72-00 from outside Morocco or 05-37-63-72-00 from within Morocco. The line connects to the Embassy in Rabat and is reserved for situations posing an immediate threat to safety or welfare.² Do not use it for routine passport or visa questions.

The Consulate can help with arrest or detention, the death of a U.S. citizen, severe illness or injury, and welfare checks on citizens whose families have lost contact. From the United States, the State Department’s Overseas Citizens Services line is 1-888-407-4747 (U.S. and Canada) or +1-202-501-4444 from overseas.¹⁹

Repatriation Loans

A destitute U.S. citizen stranded in Morocco can request a repatriation loan through the Consulate to cover the trip home. “Destitute” means you have no cash, savings, credit cards, return ticket, job, or pending benefits, and no family or friends willing and able to help. You must provide names and contact details for at least three people who could reasonably assist you financially; without that, you will not be considered.²⁰

A repatriation loan is not a grant. You sign a written repayment agreement, and if you default, the State Department can refuse to issue you a new passport or renew your existing one until the debt is paid. Collection follows standard federal debt procedures.²⁰

What Casablanca Does Not Handle

Social Security and other federal benefits questions do not go through Casablanca. The Federal Benefits Unit responsible for Morocco is located in France, and enrollment issues, payment problems, and account changes are handled there.²¹²²²³
