TU TransUnion Charge: How to Cancel, Refund, and Dispute It

A TU TransUnion charge on your bank statement is almost always a recurring subscription to a TransUnion credit monitoring or identity protection product. The most common culprit is Credit Premium, which bills $29.95 per month plus tax for three-bureau monitoring, identity theft insurance, and daily score updates.1TransUnion. 3 Bureau Credit and Identity Monitoring The charge descriptor on your statement may read “TU TRANSUNION,” “TUTRANSUNION,” or “TRANSUNION INTERACTIVE” depending on your bank. Whatever the variant, it points back to the same place, and canceling is straightforward once you know which door to use.

People usually pick up the subscription without meaning to. You check a credit score, respond to a promo during a loan application, or panic-sign up after a data breach headline, and the free trial or intro offer converts silently into a monthly bill. TransUnion’s free tier, Credit Essentials, never asks for a card, so if you’re being billed, you’re on a paid plan.2TransUnion. Free Credit Score, Report, Monitoring and Alerts

Is It You or Is It Fraud

Before you cancel anything, figure out which situation you’re in. The fix is different.

Try logging into TransUnion using the email you normally use for financial accounts. If a dashboard with your credit data loads, you have an active membership and someone in the household signed up at some point. Move on to canceling.

If you have no account and no memory of ever creating one, treat the charge as possible fraud. Call your bank first, cancel the card, and file a report at IdentityTheft.gov. TransUnion’s fraud team can place an extended fraud alert on your credit file lasting seven years, but you’ll need an FTC identity theft report or a police report along with proof of identity to request it.3TransUnion. How to Cancel the Subscription

You have three cancellation routes. Pick the one that matches how you originally signed up, and don’t consider the job done until you have a written confirmation.

Cancel on the TransUnion Website

Log in, open Settings, click Membership Details, and scroll to the bottom for cancellation options. For identity protection plans, use the drop-down in the top-right corner, select the Protection Plan tab, and click Cancel under your current plan.4TransUnion. Consumer Support A confirmation email should arrive within a few minutes. Save it.

Cancel by Phone

For Credit Essentials or Credit Premium, call 833-543-4353. For an Identity Protection plan, call 833-570-2959.5TransUnion. Contact Us For Support Have your account email, the last four digits of the payment card being charged, and the charge amount in front of you before you dial. Ask for a confirmation number at the end of the call and write it down.

Cancel Through the App Store

If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, TransUnion can’t cancel it. You have to do it on the device.

  • On iPhone: Settings, tap your name, Subscriptions, find TransUnion, tap Cancel Subscription.
  • On Android: open Google Play, go to Payments & Subscriptions, then Subscriptions, find TransUnion, and cancel.

After canceling in the app store, log into your TransUnion account to confirm the change went through on their side too.

Asking for a Refund

Once the subscription is canceled, call customer service and ask for a refund of the most recent charge. If you ask promptly, representatives can often reverse the current billing cycle, and the credit typically appears on your statement in three to five business days.

TransUnion is less willing to refund several months of unnoticed charges. If they won’t budge, your bank is the next stop.

Disputing the Charge With Your Bank

For credit card charges, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date your card issuer sent the statement containing the disputed charge to submit a written billing error notice. The notice must include your name, account number, the amount you believe is wrong, and why you think it’s an error.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Your card issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days total. While the investigation is open, the issuer cannot try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent.

For debit card charges, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act gives you the same 60-day window, measured from the date your bank sent the statement showing the unauthorized transfer. Once you report the error, your bank must investigate and report back within 10 business days.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693f – Error Resolution Miss the 60-day deadline on either card type and you can be left liable for charges that occur after that window closes, so check statements regularly.

Escalating to the CFPB

If you’ve canceled, asked for a refund, and disputed with your bank without resolution, file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. Describe the problem in your own words, list key dates and amounts, and attach supporting documents like statements and cancellation confirmation emails.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Submit a Complaint Most companies respond within 15 days, though some take up to 60. After the response, you have 60 days to tell the CFPB whether it actually resolved your issue.

A CFPB complaint carries more weight than another call to customer service because the complaints are tracked and published, and TransUnion falls squarely under the CFPB’s supervisory authority as a credit bureau.

Don’t Just Let It Ride

Leaving an unwanted subscription active doesn’t only drain your account each month. If your card later expires or gets declined, TransUnion may try to collect the unpaid balance, and a delinquent subscription debt can be sold to a collection agency. A collection account can sit on your credit report for up to seven years from the date of the original missed payment. Even small collection balances count as derogatory marks. Cancel it now and the problem ends today.
