If you had your tax preparation fees taken out of your refund, your state didn’t send the money straight to your bank. It sent it to Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (TPG), which deducts the fees and forwards the rest to you. TPG state refund tracking is a two-step process: check your state’s refund tool first to confirm the money has been released, then log in at taxpayer.sbtpg.com to see when TPG received it and sent your net deposit.
Why Your State Refund Goes Through TPG
TPG runs a product called a Refund Transfer. If you chose not to pay your tax preparer upfront, you signed a bank product authorization form letting TPG collect those fees out of your refund.1SBTPG. Refund Transfer Your state sends the full approved refund to a temporary account TPG controls. TPG takes out the preparation fee and its own processing fee, then disburses whatever remains to you.
If you didn’t elect a Refund Transfer, TPG isn’t involved and your refund goes straight to the bank account on your return. If you did, an unfamiliar deposit labeled “SBTPG” or “Tax Products” in your bank account is your refund arriving after fees.
Start With Your State’s Refund Tracker
Before you check anything on TPG’s site, confirm your state has actually released the money. Every state has its own refund lookup on the revenue department’s website, and most ask for your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact refund amount.2USAGov. Check Your Federal or State Tax Refund Status
You’re waiting for a status like “Sent,” “Issued,” or “Deposited.” Language varies. Until the state shows the money as sent, TPG has nothing to track yet, and the TPG portal won’t show anything useful. Once the state confirms the funds are out, its role is done. State revenue offices can’t see what happens next.
Log In to the TPG Taxpayer Portal
Go to taxpayer.sbtpg.com.3Santa Barbara Tax Products Group. Taxpayer Refund Status Login You’ll need three pieces of information:
- The primary taxpayer’s Social Security number
- The refund amount as a whole dollar figure, no decimals or commas
- Your filing status from the return (single, married filing jointly, head of household, and so on)
The most common login problem is entering the wrong refund figure. Use the gross amount your state approved, not the net you expect after fees. If your state approved $2,347 and you expect roughly $2,100 after deductions, enter 2347. If you’re tracking a state refund, use the state figure, not your federal refund amount.4SBTPG. What the TPG Status Labels Mean
Once you’re in, TPG shows a status for your refund. “Funded” means TPG has received the refund from the taxing authority.5SBTPG. What Does Funded Mean At that point, fees are being deducted and your net balance is being prepared for disbursement.
If the state says the money was sent but TPG shows no funding yet, the gap is almost always normal ACH settlement time. About 80% of ACH transfers clear in one business day, and the maximum for ACH credits is two business days.6Nacha. The Significant Majority of ACH Payments Settle in One Business Day or Less A one- to two-business-day gap between “sent” on the state side and “funded” on TPG’s side is expected.
After fees come out, the status updates to reflect that TPG has initiated your disbursement. Direct deposits generally reach your bank within one to three business days after TPG sends them. Prepaid debit card loads are typically faster. Paper checks take longer because they have to be printed and mailed.
Why Your Deposit Is Smaller Than the State Refund
The deposit that lands in your account will be less than the refund the state approved. TPG’s portal shows a line-by-line breakdown of what was taken out. Typical deductions include your tax preparer’s fee, TPG’s Refund Transfer administration fee, any refund advance loan repayment if you took one during filing, and any prepaid card loading fee if you chose that option.1SBTPG. If a charge on the breakdown doesn’t match what you expected, compare it against the bank product authorization form you signed during tax preparation. That form lists every fee you agreed to and is the document you’d rely on to dispute a charge.
When the Amount Was Reduced Before It Reached TPG
Sometimes a state refund arrives at TPG already smaller than the amount you were expecting. That usually means the state applied an offset to cover an outstanding debt such as unpaid child support, past-due state taxes, or another qualifying obligation. TPG doesn’t control offsets and can’t reverse them; the state took the money before TPG ever received it. To find out why, you’ll need to contact the agency that initiated the collection. A similar federal program, the Treasury Offset Program, works the same way for federal refunds.7USAGov. Treasury Offset Program
If Your Bank Rejects the Deposit
If the account number on your return is wrong or the account is closed, the bank returns the deposit to TPG. TPG then issues a cashier’s check rather than trying another electronic transfer.8SBTPG. What Happens if My Direct Deposit Is Returned
How that check reaches you depends on how you filed:
- If you filed through a tax professional, the replacement cashier’s check is available at your preparer’s office within three to five business days after the funds are returned to TPG.
- If you filed online, TPG mails the cashier’s check to the address on your tax return within two to three business days of receiving the returned funds, and the check typically arrives by USPS first-class mail within 10 to 12 business days from when it’s printed.
TPG sends the check to whatever address is on your filed return, and you can’t update that address after the fact. No expedited shipping or tracking is available. If the mailed check comes back to TPG as undeliverable, the funds go back to the state taxing authority, and you’d have to contact the state to claim them, a process that can take six to eight weeks.
Contacting TPG
If the portal doesn’t answer your question, call TPG directly. The state can’t see TPG’s processing, and your tax preparer doesn’t control the banking side. TPG has two support lines depending on how you filed:9SBTPG. Contact Information

Have your Social Security number, the gross refund amount your state approved, and the tax year ready. A representative can pull up your transaction and walk through every deduction applied.
If TPG Doesn’t Resolve the Issue
If customer support doesn’t fix the problem, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Submit a Complaint Describe the issue with dates, dollar amounts, and any communication you’ve had with TPG, and attach supporting documents like account statements or the bank product authorization form. Companies generally respond within 15 days, though some request up to 60 days for complex issues.
