TN Dept of Revenue Insurance Verification Letter: Portal and Penalties

A Tennessee Department of Revenue insurance verification letter gives you 30 days to prove your vehicle carries the state’s required liability coverage or qualifies for an exemption. The quickest way to respond is online at verifyinsurance.revenue.tn.gov using the PIN printed on your letter and your license plate number. Do it within the 30-day window and, in most cases, nothing else happens. Ignore it and fees start at $25, climb to $125, and end in a suspended registration.

Why the Letter Showed Up

The state runs every registered vehicle identification number against monthly reports submitted by auto insurers. When a VIN has no matching insurance record, the system mails a verification letter to the registered owner.1Tennessee Department of Revenue. DIFIC-1 – Insurance Verification Program Overview

A letter does not mean you are uninsured. Common reasons for a mismatch include a new or renewed policy that hadn’t yet appeared in the insurer’s monthly report, a recent switch between insurance companies, a small difference between the name on your registration and the name on your policy, or a data entry error on the insurer’s side. The letter is the state’s chance for you to clear it up before penalties attach.

What to Have in Front of You Before You Respond

Two things off the letter: the PIN printed near the top, and your license plate number.2Tennessee Department of Revenue. DIFD-19 – How to Contact Department about Insurance Verification The PIN links your response to the specific flagged record.

From your insurance card or declaration page: your insurer’s name, your policy number, and the insurer’s NAIC code (a five-digit number usually printed near the company name).3Justia. Tennessee Code 55-12-203 – Part Definitions

Responding Online

Go to verifyinsurance.revenue.tn.gov. Enter the PIN from your letter and your plate number without spaces or dashes.4Tennessee Department of Revenue. Tennessee Insurance Verification Portal The portal pulls up your case and walks you through confirming or updating your insurance information. If a fee has already been assessed, it will route you to a payment page.5Tennessee Department of Revenue. Drive Insured TN

Save or print the confirmation the portal gives you after submitting. A timestamped record protects you if a fee is later assessed by mistake.

If the Portal Isn’t Working

Two backup options: email insurance.verification@tn.gov, or call 615-741-3101 and select option 2 for insurance verification.2Tennessee Department of Revenue. DIFD-19 – How to Contact Department about Insurance Verification Have your PIN, plate number, and policy details in hand before calling.

If You Sold the Vehicle or It’s in Storage

You can still get a verification letter for a car you no longer own or one sitting unused. Tennessee treats sold, stored, or inoperable vehicles as potential exemptions from the financial responsibility requirement. Certify the vehicle’s status through the online questionnaire at driveinsuredtn.com by clicking “respond to your notice.”6Tennessee Department of Revenue. Proof of Exemption from Financial Responsibility Requirement

Do not ignore the letter because you no longer have the car. The state is tracking the registration, and fees accumulate against that registration until someone formally responds. If you sold the vehicle, a bill of sale showing the buyer’s name, sale date, and VIN makes the certification easier.

What Counts as Sufficient Coverage

Your policy has to meet Tennessee’s minimums or the flag will not clear. Those minimums are $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for bodily injury when two or more people are hurt in a single accident, and $25,000 for property damage. A single-limit policy of at least $65,000 covering all damages in one accident also satisfies the requirement.7Justia. Tennessee Code 55-12-102 – Part Definitions

What It Costs If You Don’t Respond

The penalties escalate in two 30-day steps.

  • After the first notice: no response within 30 days triggers a $25 coverage failure fee.8Tennessee Department of Revenue. Drive Insured TN Final Notice
  • After the final notice: no response within another 30 days adds a $100 fee and suspends your vehicle’s registration.8Tennessee Department of Revenue. Drive Insured TN Final Notice

A suspended registration means the vehicle cannot legally be driven. Suspended plates are visible to law enforcement during routine stops and through automated license plate readers.

Getting a Suspended Registration Back

Reinstatement takes three things: current insurance that meets Tennessee’s minimums, payment of any outstanding coverage failure fees ($25, $100, or both), and a county reinstatement fee paid at your local county clerk’s office.9Tennessee Department of Revenue.
