Thin and Nontraditional Credit: Secured Cards, Boost, and FHA Loans

If you have never borrowed, you can build credit without a credit history by opening products designed for first-time borrowers and by getting the bills you already pay reported to the credit bureaus. A secured credit card, a credit-builder loan, or authorized user status on a trusted family member’s account will start a traditional file within about six months, and services that report rent, utility, and other recurring payments can add data you have already earned. Federal mortgage programs also recognize nontraditional payment histories, so you do not necessarily have to wait years before buying a home.

About 26 million U.S. adults have no file at any of the three national credit bureaus, and another 19 million have files too sparse to score. If that describes you, the path forward is less about proving creditworthiness and more about generating the data points a scoring algorithm needs to see.

First, Figure Out Where You Actually Stand

Three labels get used loosely, but they call for different moves.

You are credit invisible if Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion have no file on you at all. No accounts, no inquiries, nothing. This is common for recent immigrants, young adults, and anyone who has always paid cash.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Data Point: Credit Invisibles

You are unscorable if a file exists but the scoring model cannot work with it. FICO needs at least one account that has been open six months or longer and at least one account reported to a bureau in the past six months. Miss either and no score gets generated.2myFICO. What Are the Minimum Requirements for a FICO Score

You have a thin file if you have accounts and maybe even a score, but not much behind it. Some lenders treat anyone with fewer than five accounts as thin-file; others draw the line lower.3Experian. What Is a Thin Credit File and How Will It Impact Your Life The practical consequence is the same: denials or higher rates.

Pull your free reports from each bureau to confirm which bucket you are in before you spend money on any product or service.

Open an Account Built for New Borrowers

The fastest, most reliable way to generate a credit file is to open one or two accounts specifically designed for people who do not yet have one. Three products exist for this purpose, and all of them report to the bureaus the same way regular accounts do.

Secured Credit Cards

A secured card works like any other credit card, with one difference: you put down a refundable cash deposit that typically equals your credit limit. Minimum deposits usually start around $200, though some issuers accept as little as $49, and some will let you deposit $5,000 or more for a correspondingly higher limit.4Capital One. Security Deposit on a Credit Card: What It Is and How It Works5Experian. How Much Should You Deposit for a Secured Card

Use it for a small recurring charge, pay the full balance every month, and keep your spending well below the limit. After roughly 6 to 18 months of responsible use, many issuers graduate the account to an unsecured card and refund your deposit without a new application.

Credit-Builder Loans

These work in reverse. The lender deposits the loan amount into a locked savings account or CD, and you make monthly payments over the term of the loan. Each payment gets reported as an installment loan. Once you pay it off, you receive the money. Typical amounts range from $300 to $1,000.6Federal Reserve. An Overview of Credit-Building Products Credit unions and community development financial institutions are the most common sources. You pay interest and sometimes a small administrative fee, but the forced-savings structure means most of the money comes back to you.

Authorized User on a Family Member’s Card

If someone close to you has a credit card with a long history of on-time payments and low balances, being added as an authorized user can bring that history onto your own report. You do not even need to use the card.

The limits matter. Modern scoring models downplay authorized-user accounts to discourage artificial score inflation, and some mortgage lenders ignore them entirely because you are not legally responsible for the debt.7Experian. Can Piggybacking Credit Help Me Get a Mortgage The primary cardholder also carries real risk, since they remain liable for charges and their own score suffers if utilization climbs. Treat authorized user status as a supplement, not a substitute, for accounts in your own name.

Get Credit for the Bills You Already Pay

Most landlords and utility companies do not report to the bureaus on their own. If you want that payment history recognized, you have to route it through a service that does.

Rent payments carry the most weight because they mirror a mortgage. Utility bills for electricity, water, and natural gas come next. Telecom bills for cell phone and internet rank slightly below utilities in some underwriting guidelines. Insurance premiums for auto, renters, or life coverage also count, as do child care payments and school tuition, though these sit in a secondary tier.8U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. A note on buy-now-pay-later: as of early 2026, Affirm is the only major BNPL provider consistently furnishing repayment data on all its products to the credit bureaus. Most others do not report short-term installment plans at all.9EveryCRSReport.com. Experian Boost

Boost is free. You connect your bank account, and Experian scans for recurring payments on utilities, cell phone, rent, insurance, and streaming services, then adds qualifying history directly to your Experian file. The improvement only shows up when a lender pulls your Experian report specifically, but there is no cost and no waiting on a third party to verify records.

Third-Party Rent and Bill Reporting Services

These services contact your landlord or utility company, verify your history, and furnish the data to one or more bureaus. You will need your Social Security Number or ITIN, current account numbers for each provider, and 12 to 24 months of payment proof from bank statements or digital payment confirmations. Verification and reporting typically take several weeks.

Fees vary. Some charge monthly, some a one-time setup. Before paying, confirm the service actually reports to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, not to a proprietary database that lenders rarely check.

Scoring Models That Look Beyond Your Credit File

Traditional FICO models only read data already in your bureau file, which is the catch-22 of starting from zero. A handful of newer models pull in outside data.

UltraFICO uses your checking, savings, and money market account activity, looking at how long you have held accounts, how often you transact, whether you maintain a healthy balance, and whether you have gone negative. You need at least one checking account with three months of transaction history. Among consumers with thin files, 78 percent see a score increase and more than 40 percent see an increase over 20 points.10FICO. UltraFICO Score – Leveraging Consumer Contributed Data The caveat is that your lender has to use UltraFICO, and adoption is still growing.

VantageScore 4.0 was built to score more consumers, including those with thin files, and it can incorporate rent and utility histories. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have moved toward accepting VantageScore alongside FICO for mortgage underwriting, which could widen access for borrowers who score better under the newer model.

How Long This Takes

Building a file from nothing takes roughly six months to produce your first FICO score, and it takes consistent use over a year or more before that score reflects enough history for competitive loan terms.2myFICO. What Are the Minimum Requirements for a FICO Score No service or company can shorten that clock, regardless of what they charge.

During that build-up window, errors do disproportionate damage. One misreported late payment on a two-account file hurts far more than the same error on a twenty-account file. Pull your reports regularly as new data gets added, and dispute anything that does not match your records.

Buying a Home Before You Have a Score

If a mortgage is your eventual goal, you do not necessarily have to wait for a score. Both conventional and government-backed programs have pathways for borrowers without one.

Fannie Mae

Fannie Mae allows manually underwritten loans for borrowers without credit scores, with limits. The property must be a one-unit principal residence, the transaction must be a purchase or limited cash-out refinance, and your debt-to-income ratio cannot exceed 36 percent. High-balance loan amounts are not eligible.11Fannie Mae. Eligibility Requirements for Loans with Nontraditional Credit

For most manually underwritten loans, each borrower without a score must document four nontraditional credit references, each showing 12 consecutive months of payment history. HomeReady loans require three. If at least one reference is a housing payment, no minimum reserves are required; otherwise, you will need 12 months of reserves on hand.12Fannie Mae. Number and Types of Nontraditional Credit References

One boundary worth stating plainly: if you actually have a scorable file but your score falls below the lender’s minimum, nontraditional credit underwriting is generally not available. These rules exist for people who genuinely lack scorable credit, not for working around a low score.

FHA

FHA-insured mortgages require at least three nontraditional references for borrowers without scores. At least one must come from Group I sources: rental payments or utility accounts. If you are a renter, the rental reference must be independently verified. Lenders must exhaust available Group I references before turning to Group II sources like insurance premiums, child care, or cell phone bills. A documented 12-month savings history also counts as one reference, provided you made deposits at least quarterly and the account shows no overdrafts.8U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD Handbook 4155.1 – Mortgage Credit Analysis for Mortgage Insurance

A borrower with a solid rental history, consistent utility payments, and one or two other references has a realistic shot at approval without ever having held a credit card.

Know Your Rights and Spot the Scams

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you can dispute any inaccurate or incomplete information in your file at no cost, with any consumer reporting agency, including specialty bureaus that maintain rental and other nontraditional records. The agency must investigate within 30 days, with a possible 15-day extension if you provide additional information during that window. Anything that cannot be verified must be deleted or corrected.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – Section 1681i14Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act

The Credit Repair Organizations Act prohibits any company from charging you before promised services are fully performed. The law also bans these companies from advising you to make false statements to a credit bureau or alter your identity to hide negative information. If you sign a contract with a credit repair organization, you can cancel within three business days at no charge.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – Section 1679b16Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Can I Tell a Credit Repair Scam from a Reputable Credit Counselor

People with no credit history are a favorite target of scams precisely because the system has shut them out. The CFPB flags several warning signs:

  • Any demand for payment before the work is done. All advance fees are illegal under federal law.
  • Promises to remove accurate, current negative information. No legitimate service can do this.
  • Instructions to dispute everything on your report, including items you know are correct.
  • Evasiveness when you ask about doing it yourself for free. You can.
  • Any attempt to position the company as the sole gatekeeper between you and the bureaus.

Everything a credit repair company can do, you can do yourself at no cost: dispute errors directly with each bureau online, request your free annual reports, and use the free and low-cost tools above. What you cannot buy is time, and that is the one thing building credit without a history actually requires.
