The TD pre-authorized debit form gives a biller — a landlord, utility, insurer, gym, or any other company — written permission to pull recurring payments directly from your TD account. You download it or generate it through TD, fill in your banking details, sign it, and hand it to the biller. TD operates on both sides of the border, and the form works differently depending on whether your account sits with TD Canada Trust or TD Bank in the United States.
Where to Get the Form
TD Canada Trust
You have three routes. In the TD app, open your TD credit card, tap the “Manage” tab, and scroll to “Automatic Payments to Pay Card” to set up a PAD electronically. In EasyWeb, TD’s online banking portal, follow the authentication prompts to reach the PAD agreement page. For credit card PADs, TD provides separate online forms for Canadian-dollar and US-dollar accounts on its pre-authorized debit page.1TD Canada Trust. Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD)
If you need a paper form — for example, to authorize debits from an account held at a different financial institution — download the Pre-Authorized Debit Agreement PDF from TD’s website, fill it out, and mail or fax it to the address printed on the form.1TD Canada Trust. Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) When the biller is a utility, landlord, or other company rather than TD itself, that biller usually supplies its own PAD agreement. All you need to complete it are your TD banking details.
EasyWeb can also generate a direct deposit form with your account details pre-filled. On the Accounts page, select the account, click the “Manage” tab, then “Direct deposit form (PDF).”2TD Bank. How to Access the Direct Deposit Form on EasyWeb That form stands in for a void cheque, giving the biller your routing information without a chequebook.
TD Bank (US)
If your account is with TD Bank in the US, the biller almost always provides the authorization form. You fill it in with your TD routing number and account number, both of which appear at the bottom of a TD Bank check, on your monthly statement, and in the “Account Details” section of Online Banking or the TD Bank app.3TD Bank. What Goes on the Form: Canadian Accounts
Every PAD form for a TD Canada Trust account asks for three banking numbers. A single wrong digit will bounce the transaction, so check each one against a void cheque, your monthly statement, or the EasyWeb direct deposit PDF.
- Institution number (3 digits). For all TD Canada Trust accounts, this is 004.5TD Canada Trust. TD Canada Trust – Direct Deposit / Debit Information
- Transit (branch) number (5 digits). The first four digits identify your branch. The fifth is a geographic code tied to your province or region. For a Toronto account, the fifth digit is a “2,” so a branch number of 1001 is written as 10012.5TD Canada Trust. TD Canada Trust – Direct Deposit / Debit Information
- Account number (7 digits). If yours is only six digits long, add a leading zero. So 123456 becomes 0123456.5TD Canada Trust. TD Canada Trust – Direct Deposit / Debit Information
Beyond the numbers, the form itself will ask you to date and sign it, mark whether the PAD is personal or business, state the amount (fixed or variable), and set the frequency — weekly, monthly, on fixed dates, or triggered by an event. The biller’s form should already contain this structure along with a statement of your cancellation and reimbursement rights, as required by Payments Canada Rule H1.6Payments Canada. What Goes on the Form: US Accounts
A TD Bank form needs two numbers instead of three. The routing number is nine digits, and it varies by the state where you opened the account. Examples: 031201360 for New Jersey, 026013673 for Metro New York City, 067014822 for Florida, and 036001808 for Pennsylvania.3TD Bank. Using the wrong state’s routing number is the most common mistake. If you have moved or opened the account elsewhere, confirm the number from a TD check, a statement, or the Account Details screen in Online Banking before sending the form in.
What Happens After You Submit It
The signed form goes to the biller, not to TD. This trips people up. The biller is the party that initiates withdrawals from your account, so the biller is the one who needs the agreement on file. Most accept it through a secure upload portal, by email, by fax, or by mail.7Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. Pre-Authorized Debits
If you set the agreement up electronically or by phone, your bank should send written confirmation at least three business days before the first withdrawal, with the details of the agreement.7Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. Pre-Authorized Debits Typical processing for PAD transactions runs three to five business days once the biller submits the debit. Changes made inside TD’s own system, such as credit card PADs, take one to two business days to take effect.1TD Canada Trust. Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD)
Watch your account after the first withdrawal. Confirm the amount, the date, and that only one debit was pulled. If anything is off, contact the biller before the next cycle rather than waiting to see whether it repeats.
How to Cancel a PAD
Canadian Accounts
To stop a PAD in Canada, give the biller notice that you are revoking authorization. The biller is allowed to set a notice period, but under Payments Canada Rule H1 that period cannot exceed 30 calendar days.6Payments Canada. Rule H1 – Pre-Authorized Debits Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation. Without it, any later billing dispute becomes much harder to resolve.
Closing your TD account or asking TD to block payments does not cancel the underlying agreement. The biller can keep trying to collect, which can produce returned-payment fees or collection activity. Cancel with the biller first.
US Accounts
In the US, Regulation E lets you place a stop-payment order with TD Bank, orally or in writing, at least three business days before the next scheduled withdrawal. If you give the order by phone, the bank can require written confirmation within 14 days. Miss that follow-up and the oral order expires.8eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers
TD Bank charges $30 for a stop-payment order on a check or ACH debit.9TD Bank. Personal Fee Schedule A stop payment is only a block at the bank. Also contact the biller to revoke the authorization so they stop submitting debit requests in the first place.
Disputing a Withdrawal
Canadian Accounts
If a withdrawal was not authorized, does not match the agreed amount, or came through after you revoked the PAD, you can file a reimbursement claim with your bank. For personal PADs, the window is 90 calendar days from the posting date. For business PADs, it is only 10 business days.6Payments Canada. Rule H1 – Pre-Authorized Debits Claims filed after those deadlines sit outside the Payments Canada framework and have to be worked out directly with the biller.
The bank must accept the claim if the PAD was not drawn according to your agreement, your authorization was revoked, or the biller failed to send required confirmation or pre-notification.6Payments Canada. Rule H1 – Pre-Authorized Debits Keep your original PAD agreement and any cancellation correspondence to support the claim.
US Accounts
Under Regulation E, report an unauthorized electronic fund transfer to TD Bank within 60 days of receiving the statement that first shows the error. The bank then investigates and determines liability based on how quickly you reported.10Consumer Compliance Outlook. Fees to Watch For
A PAD that bounces because the account balance is too low will trigger a fee at TD Canada Trust: $10 for a returned payment on a Canadian-dollar account and $5 on a US-dollar account. If TD covers the payment through overdraft instead of returning it, the charge is $5 plus interest at 21 percent per year on the overdraft amount.11TD Canada Trust. List of Services and Fees
On the US side, TD Bank has eliminated NSF fees, so a returned payment due to insufficient funds will not cost you anything at the bank.12TD Bank. Introducing TD Overdraft Relief A stop-payment order still costs $30, and the biller may charge its own returned-payment fee under your service agreement with them.9TD Bank. Personal Fee Schedule
