Tax Tips for Low Income Earners: EITC, Filing, and Free Prep

If you earn a low income, the biggest tax credits for low income earners are the Earned Income Tax Credit (worth up to $8,231 in 2026 for a family with three or more children), the Child Tax Credit with its refundable Additional Child Tax Credit, and the Saver’s Credit for retirement contributions. Getting any of them requires one thing: filing a return, even in years the law doesn’t force you to.

File a Return Even When You Don’t Have To

The IRS doesn’t mail refunds automatically. You claim them by filing.

For 2026, a single filer under 65 isn’t required to file until gross income reaches $16,100. Head of household filers cross the threshold at $24,150, and married couples filing jointly at $32,200.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Self-employment changes the math: net earnings of $400 or more require a return regardless of total income.

Under those income levels you may owe nothing, but you may still be owed money. Refundable credits like the EITC and the Additional Child Tax Credit only reach you through a filed return. Skip the return and you skip the refund.

If you missed a past year, you generally have three years from the original filing deadline to submit a late return and still collect the refund.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund After that, the money reverts to the Treasury. A 2023 return you never filed must reach the IRS by April 2027 to preserve any refund.3Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund

The Earned Income Tax Credit

The EITC is the single largest credit available to working people with low or moderate income, and it’s fully refundable. That means if the credit exceeds what you owe in tax, the difference comes back as a cash refund.

You need earned income to qualify: wages, salary, tips, or self-employment income.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 32 – Earned Income Passive money like interest, dividends, or unemployment benefits doesn’t qualify you.

2026 Credit Amounts and Income Limits

Both the maximum credit and the income ceiling depend on how many qualifying children you have and how you file:

  • No qualifying children: maximum credit $664; income ceiling $19,540 single or head of household, $26,820 joint.
  • One qualifying child: maximum $4,427; ceiling $51,593 single/HoH, $58,863 joint.
  • Two qualifying children: maximum $7,316; ceiling $58,629 single/HoH, $65,899 joint.
  • Three or more qualifying children: maximum $8,231; ceiling $62,974 single/HoH, $70,224 joint.

Investment income above an annually adjusted threshold disqualifies you entirely, no matter how little you earned from work.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 32 – Earned Income Check the current EITC tables on the IRS site before filing.

Qualifying Child Rules

A qualifying child must pass age, relationship, and residency tests. The child must be under 19 at the end of the tax year, or under 24 if a full-time student for at least five months. A permanently and totally disabled child qualifies at any age. The child must live with you in the United States more than half the year, with temporary absences for school, medical care, or military service still counted as time at home.5Internal Revenue Service. If You Have No Children

Workers without qualifying children can still claim the EITC, but the credit is small and the rules narrow. You must be at least 25 and under 65 at the end of the tax year, live in the United States more than half the year, and not be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 32 – Earned Income The pandemic-era expansion that dropped the age floor to 19 has expired at the federal level, though some states run their own earned income credits with broader age eligibility.

What Happens If a Claim Is Denied

If the IRS reduces or denies your EITC, you’ll have to file Form 8862 the next time you want to claim it to prove you now meet all the requirements.6Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents

The Child Tax Credit reduces your tax bill dollar-for-dollar for each qualifying child under 17 who is a U.S. citizen or resident.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 24 – Child Tax Credit Recent legislation has adjusted the amount and refundable portion, so verify current figures on the IRS site before you file.

For low-income earners, the refundable piece matters most. The Additional Child Tax Credit lets you receive part of the credit as a cash refund even if you owe zero federal income tax. It’s calculated on your earned income above $3,000, so higher earnings within the low-income range produce a larger refundable amount.

Dependents who don’t qualify for the CTC may qualify for the Credit for Other Dependents. It covers children 17 and older, elderly parents you support, and other qualifying relatives, and is worth up to $500 per dependent. The ODC is nonrefundable, so it can zero out a tax bill but won’t generate a refund on its own.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding the Credit for Other Dependents Every dependent you claim under either credit needs a valid Social Security number or ITIN.

Pick the Right Filing Status

Filing status sets your standard deduction and your tax brackets. Picking wrong is one of the most expensive mistakes low-income earners make, especially single parents defaulting to Single when they qualify for Head of Household.

The 2026 standard deductions:1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026

  • Single: $16,100
  • Married Filing Jointly: $32,200
  • Head of Household: $24,150
  • Married Filing Separately: $16,100

The gap between Single and Head of Household is $8,050 in income wiped out before any tax applies. Head of Household also stretches the 10% bracket further, so more of your remaining income is taxed at the lowest rate.10Internal Revenue Service. Federal Income Tax Rates and Brackets

To file as Head of Household you must be unmarried (or considered unmarried) on the last day of the year and pay more than half the cost of keeping up a home for a qualifying person, usually a dependent child but sometimes an elderly parent you support.11Internal Revenue Service. Publication 501 – Dependents, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information

One warning about Married Filing Separately: it locks you out of the EITC and cuts back several other credits. For low-income couples, filing jointly almost always produces a lower combined tax. Narrow exceptions exist, like income-driven student loan repayment or protecting one spouse from the other’s tax debt.

The Saver’s Credit for Retirement Contributions

The Retirement Savings Contributions Credit rewards low-income workers for putting money into an IRA or 401(k). It’s a credit against tax, not a deduction, and equals 50%, 20%, or 10% of your contributions (up to $2,000 for single filers or $4,000 for joint) depending on your adjusted gross income.12Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Savings Contributions Credit (Saver’s Credit)

The 2026 tiers for single filers:

  • 50% credit: AGI of $24,250 or less
  • 20% credit: AGI between $24,251 and $26,250
  • 10% credit: AGI between $26,251 and $40,250
  • No credit: AGI above $40,250

Head of household ceilings run higher, with the 50% tier available up to $36,375. Joint filers top out at $80,500 for the 10% tier. A single filer earning $22,000 who contributes $2,000 to a Roth IRA gets a $1,000 credit at the 50% rate, roughly cutting the real cost of that contribution in half.

The Saver’s Credit is nonrefundable, so it can’t produce a refund on its own.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 25B – Elective Deferrals and IRA Contributions by Certain Individuals It still pays off when stacked with the EITC, because zeroing out your tax with the Saver’s Credit means your refundable credits come back to you undiminished. You must be at least 18, not a full-time student, and not someone else’s dependent.
