An electronically filed federal tax return generally has a processing time of about 21 days, while a mailed paper return takes six weeks or more. Those windows assume a clean return. If the IRS spots an error, needs to verify your identity, or has to hand your return to a person for any reason, the wait can stretch to several months.
Standard Timelines for E-File and Paper
The IRS processes most e-filed Form 1040 returns within roughly 21 days of receipt.1Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms Over 93% of individual returns arrive electronically, and the agency’s automated systems cross-check wage data and catch basic math errors without human involvement.2Internal Revenue Service. Returns Filed, Taxes Collected and Refunds Issued
Paper returns take a different path. Every mailed Form 1040 must be opened, sorted, and manually keyed into IRS systems, which puts the standard window at six weeks or more from the date the return arrives.3Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Anything that needs error correction or other special handling falls outside that estimate.1Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms
How you receive the refund adds to the total wait. The IRS issues more than nine out of ten refunds in fewer than 21 days when taxpayers combine e-filing with direct deposit.4Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Refund Faster: Tell IRS to Direct Deposit Your Refund to One, Two, or Three Accounts A paper check adds mail time on top of processing.
The February 15 Hold on EITC and ACTC Returns
If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, federal law bars the IRS from releasing your refund before February 15, regardless of how early you filed. The hold applies to the whole refund, not just the credit portion.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds
For the 2026 filing season, the IRS estimates that EITC or ACTC filers who e-file and choose direct deposit can expect their refund by March 2, assuming no problems with the return.6Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit Filing in early January will not get your money any sooner.
What Causes a Return to Take Longer
The 21-day and six-week windows apply only when everything on the return checks out. When it doesn’t, the return leaves the automated pipeline for a person, and timelines stretch unpredictably.
Errors and Missing Information
A math error, a Social Security number that doesn’t match IRS records, or a missing form can all trigger a manual review. When the IRS needs something from you, it sends Letter 12C explaining what’s missing, which could be a corrected form or verification of income or withholding amounts.7Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 12C The return sits frozen until you respond, and each round of correspondence adds weeks. Send exactly what the letter asks for. Partial or unrelated documents restart the cycle.
Identity Verification
The IRS fraud detection system flags returns filed from unusual locations, returns with income patterns that don’t match prior years, and returns matching known identity theft patterns. When yours gets flagged, the IRS sends a notice (typically from the CP5071 series) asking you to verify your identity online, by phone, or in person. Even after you verify successfully, the IRS can take up to nine weeks to finish processing.8Internal Revenue Service. Verify Your Return There is no way to speed this up from your end.
Injured Spouse Claims
If you file a joint return but your spouse has a past-due obligation like unpaid child support, defaulted student loans, or back taxes, the IRS can take the entire refund to cover that debt. Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) protects your share but adds significant time:
- Filed electronically with the return: about 11 weeks
- Filed on paper with the return: about 14 weeks
- Filed separately after the return was already processed: about 8 weeks
Filing Form 8379 electronically with the original return saves about three weeks compared to mailing it.9Internal Revenue Service. Injured Spouse
Amended Returns Take Their Own Track
Form 1040-X typically takes 8 to 12 weeks to process, and some cases stretch to 16 weeks.10Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Amended returns can now be e-filed with tax software for most recent tax years, which is worth doing since paper amendments follow the same slow manual path as any other paper filing. You must file on paper if you originally filed on paper earlier in the current year for a prior tax year, or if the return is for tax year 2021 or before.11Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return
Amendments have their own tracking tool, “Where’s My Amended Return?”, which needs your Social Security number, date of birth, and ZIP code. You can start checking about three weeks after submitting.10Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return
Tracking Your Return and When to Call
The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool is the only reliable way to check status. You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return.3Internal Revenue Service. Refunds The tool updates once a day, usually overnight.12Internal Revenue Service. Debunking Common Myths About Federal Tax Refunds Checking more often shows the same information.
The tracker moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.13Internal Revenue Service. About Where’s My Refund? If yours sits on “Return Received” for weeks, it’s likely in a manual review queue. The IRS2Go mobile app provides the same tracking with the same three data points.14Internal Revenue Service. Don’t call before the standard processing window has closed. For e-filed returns, wait at least 21 days from acceptance. For paper returns, wait at least six weeks from mailing.15Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Phone agents cannot access additional information or move a return forward before those windows close. The exception: if “Where’s My Refund?” specifically tells you to contact the IRS, do it right away regardless of how long it has been.
If a delayed refund is causing genuine financial hardship and normal IRS channels have not resolved the issue, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can intervene. Hardship here means concrete harm such as risk of losing housing, inability to afford food or utilities, or significant credit consequences. Interest When the IRS Is Late
If the IRS takes too long to send your refund, it owes you interest. Federal law gives the IRS 45 days from the filing deadline, or from the date you filed if you filed late, to issue the refund. Miss that window and interest accrues from the filing deadline at the federal overpayment rate.17Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments
For the first quarter of 2026, the individual overpayment rate is 7% per year, compounded daily.18Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 Starting in the second quarter, the rate drops to 6%.19Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-8 You don’t need to file a claim. The IRS calculates and includes the interest automatically when it sends the refund. That interest is taxable income on next year’s return.
What to Expect in 2026
This filing season carries more uncertainty than usual. The IRS workforce dropped from roughly 102,000 employees to about 74,000 during 2025, a 27% reduction that hit taxpayer services and return processing along with other functions. Customer service representative headcount fell by 22%, and while some positions were backfilled late in the year, the replacements have less experience.20Internal Revenue Service. About 11 million individuals still file on paper each year, and those returns bear the brunt of the staffing cuts. If you can e-file and choose direct deposit, 2026 is the year to make sure you do. Paper filers, and anyone whose return gets pulled for manual review, should plan for waits longer than the standard timelines suggest.
