Tax Refund Direct Deposit: IRS Rules, Timing, and Splits

Direct deposit is the fastest way to receive a federal tax refund, and since September 30, 2025, tax refund direct deposit is effectively the default for individual filers under Executive Order 14247.1Internal Revenue Service. Questions and Answers About Executive Order 14247 Most e-filed returns produce a deposit within three weeks of filing.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds If you file without bank information, the IRS will send a notice asking for it, and a paper check will only go out after six weeks with no response. Getting the deposit right the first time matters, because a wrong routing number or a closed account can push your money out by months.

Entering Your Bank Information Correctly

You need two numbers: the bank’s nine-digit routing number and your account number. Both are printed at the bottom of a paper check, or you can pull them from your bank’s online portal or mobile app. Do not use the routing number from a deposit slip. That number is often different from the one used for electronic transfers.

On Form 1040, the routing number goes on Line 35b, the account type (checking or savings) on Line 35c, and the account number on Line 35d.3Internal Revenue Service. Line-by-Line Instructions Free File Fillable Forms Tax software fills these fields for you, but check them yourself before submitting. A transposed digit is one of the most common causes of refund problems, and once the return is filed, you cannot change the banking information.

Whose Account and What Kind

The refund should only go into an account in your own name. The IRS warns against directing deposits to someone else’s account, including a tax preparer’s.4Internal Revenue Service. Joint filers have a little more flexibility. The account can be in either spouse’s name or held jointly.4Internal Revenue Service. If yours rejects it, the refund gets delayed while the IRS works out a fallback.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 8888 – Allocation of Refund

The account has to be at a U.S. financial institution, or at a correspondent bank that maintains an account with the Federal Reserve. Taxpayers living abroad can receive deposits through that correspondent arrangement, but a purely foreign account with no Federal Reserve connection will not work.6Internal Revenue Service. If you don’t have a traditional bank account, a reloadable prepaid debit card works as long as it has a routing number and account number. The IRS processes those the same way as a regular bank deposit.4Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Refund Faster: Tell IRS to Direct Deposit Your Refund to One, Two, or Three Accounts

Splitting a Refund Across Up To Three Accounts

You can divide a refund across as many as three accounts by attaching Form 8888 to your return. Each deposit must be at least $1, and the amounts across all three must add up to your full refund.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 8888 – Allocation of Refund This is useful if you want part of the refund to land in savings automatically rather than relying on yourself to transfer it later.

The eligible destinations go beyond checking and savings. You can send deposits to traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEP IRAs, Health Savings Accounts, Archer MSAs, and Coverdell education savings accounts.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 8888 – Allocation of Refund SIMPLE IRAs are not eligible. Every account still has to be in your name.

The order matters if the IRS adjusts your refund. Math error changes hit the last account listed first and work backward. An increase gets added to the last account; a decrease is taken from the last account before touching the others.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 8888 – Allocation of Refund Put your most important deposit first, and your discretionary one last.

The Three-Refund Limit Per Account

No single bank account or prepaid card can receive more than three IRS refunds in a tax year. The rule has been in place since 2015 as an anti-fraud measure. A fourth refund routed to the same account is automatically converted to a paper check mailed to the address on the return, along with a notice explaining the change.8Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Limits This rarely affects someone filing a single return, but families sharing an account or preparers reusing the same routing information can trip over it.

How Long the Deposit Takes

The standard timeline for an e-filed return with direct deposit is three weeks from the date you file. Paper returns take six weeks or more from the day the IRS receives them.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Once the IRS transmits the payment, your bank still has to process the ACH transfer, which adds one to five business days.

The PATH Act Hold for EITC and ACTC Filers

If your return claims the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the IRS cannot release any part of your refund before February 15. This is a legally required hold under the PATH Act, giving the agency time to verify income and withholding.9Taxpayer Advocate Service. Held or Stopped Refunds It applies to the entire refund, not just the portion tied to those credits. Filing early won’t move the date. Most affected filers see projected deposit dates by late February.

Amended Returns

An amended return filed electronically on Form 1040-X for tax year 2021 or later can request direct deposit the same way. Processing is slower, though: 8 to 12 weeks typically, and up to 16 weeks in some cases.10Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions Paper-filed amendments don’t qualify for direct deposit at all.

Debts That Can Reduce the Deposit

Your refund can be reduced or completely taken before it reaches the bank if you owe certain debts. The Treasury Offset Program matches refunds against past-due federal taxes, state income taxes, state unemployment debts, child support, spousal support, and federal non-tax debts such as defaulted student loans.11Taxpayer Advocate Service. Refund Offsets A notice arrives by mail after the offset, explaining how much was taken and where it was applied.12Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Resources for Treasury Offset Program Debtors

When you’ve split a refund across accounts, federal tax offsets come out of the last account listed and work backward. Child support, student loans, and similar offsets come out of the account with the lowest routing number first.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 8888 – Allocation of Refund

Injured Spouse Relief

On a joint return, if only your spouse owes one of these debts, the IRS will still offset the entire joint refund unless you act. To claim your share, file Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation), either with the original return or separately after the offset notice arrives. Processing takes up to eight weeks when the form is filed on its own, longer when filed with the return, and you need a new Form 8379 for each tax year.13Internal Revenue Service. When the Wrong Account Gets the Money

The IRS does not take responsibility for refunds sent to the wrong account because of a taxpayer or preparer error. What happens next depends on whether the wrong number belongs to a real account.14Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18

If the number doesn’t match any real account, the bank rejects the deposit and returns the funds to the IRS, which then sends you a notice with next steps. It adds weeks, but the money is recoverable.

If the number does match someone else’s account and the bank accepts the deposit, you have to work with the financial institution directly to get the money back. The IRS cannot force the bank to return the funds. If the bank refuses, it becomes a civil matter between you, the bank, and the account holder.14Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18

Filing a Refund Trace

If the IRS shows your refund as sent but nothing has arrived after five calendar days, file Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) to open a trace. The IRS then contacts the bank to attempt recovery. Banks have up to 90 days to respond, and the full process can run 120 days.14Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18 If you catch the error before the return has posted, call 800-829-1040 immediately to try to stop the deposit before it goes out.

Tracking the Refund

The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool and the IRS2Go mobile app track a return through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.15Internal Revenue Service. About Where’s My Refund? The tool updates once a day, usually overnight, so checking more than once a day won’t reveal anything new. Status for e-filed returns appears within 24 hours. Paper returns take about four weeks before the tool has anything to show.

Once the status flips to “Refund Sent,” the IRS has released the payment. When it actually shows up depends on your bank’s processing speed for incoming ACH transfers. Some banks post federal deposits the same day; others take one to five business days.

Interest If the IRS Is Late

If the IRS takes too long to send your refund, it owes you interest. The agency has 45 days from your filing deadline, or 45 days from the date you actually filed if you filed late, to issue the refund without owing interest. Past that window, interest accrues from the original due date of the return.16Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments The rate adjusts quarterly, based on the federal short-term rate.17Internal Revenue Service. Interest

You don’t have to ask for the interest. The IRS calculates it and adds it to the refund automatically. Refund interest is taxable income, and if it exceeds $10 in a calendar year, you’ll get a 1099-INT for it.
