The summer federal holidays in 2026 are Memorial Day on Monday, May 25; Juneteenth National Independence Day on Friday, June 19; Independence Day on Saturday, July 4, observed by the federal government on Friday, July 3; and Labor Day on Monday, September 7.1U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Federal Holidays Three of the four give federal workers a three-day weekend on their own. The fourth, Independence Day, shifts because July 4 falls on a Saturday.
The 2026 Summer Holiday Dates
- Memorial Day: Monday, May 25, 2026
- Juneteenth National Independence Day: Friday, June 19, 2026
- Independence Day: Saturday, July 4, 2026 (federally observed Friday, July 3)
- Labor Day: Monday, September 7, 2026
All four are legal public holidays under 5 U.S.C. ยง 6103, the statute that lists federal holidays and governs pay and leave for civilian federal employees nationwide.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 6103 – Holidays States and private employers set their own holiday schedules, though most follow the federal list.
Why Independence Day Moves to July 3
Memorial Day and Labor Day are always Mondays, so they never shift. Juneteenth and Independence Day are tied to fixed calendar dates, which means they can land on a weekend. When they do, the federal government applies a standard substitution:
- If the holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is treated as the holiday for pay and leave.
- If it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is treated as the holiday.
July 4, 2026, is a Saturday, so Friday, July 3, becomes the observed federal holiday.1U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Federal Holidays The Office of Personnel Management calls this the “in lieu of” determination, and the substitute day is the workday immediately before a Saturday holiday or immediately after a Sunday one.3U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Fact Sheet: Federal Holidays – In Lieu Of Determination Federal offices, banks, and mail delivery follow that observed date rather than the calendar date. Juneteenth 2026 lands on a Friday on its own, so no shift applies.
What Closes on Each Holiday
Administrative federal offices shut down on all four dates. The U.S. Postal Service suspends regular mail delivery. The Federal Reserve Banks also close, which halts the Fedwire Funds Service and the National Settlement Service for the day.4Federal Reserve Financial Services. Wholesale Services Operating Hours Wire transfers cannot settle, check clearing stalls, and expected direct deposits or payroll transfers will not process until the next business day. The Fed follows the same Saturday/Sunday substitution rule as other federal agencies.5Federal Reserve Board. Holidays Observed – K.8
Most commercial banks track the Fed’s calendar, so branches are typically closed or on reduced hours. Online banking still functions, but any transaction that depends on Fed settlement waits until the system reopens. For the July 3 observance in 2026, Thursday, July 2, is the last full business day for time-sensitive transfers before the long weekend.
Deadlines That Can Shift
Federal holidays can push IRS deadlines. If a filing or payment due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it moves to the next day that is none of those.6Internal Revenue Service. When to File That covers income tax returns, estimated payments, and other time-sensitive filings.
The second-quarter estimated tax payment is normally due June 15.7Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax In 2026, June 15 is a Monday, so no shift occurs and Juneteenth on June 19 does not affect it. If you have any other summer deadline that would land on July 3, July 4, or one of the Monday holidays, apply the same weekend-and-holiday rule and pay on the next business day.
Getting Paid for Working a Federal Holiday
Federal employees and private-sector workers follow different rules.
A federal employee who has the day off receives regular pay for the holiday. A federal employee required to work receives regular pay plus premium pay equal to the basic rate for up to eight hours of non-overtime holiday work.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 5546 – Pay for Sunday and Holiday Work A standard shift worked on the Fourth of July effectively pays double the normal daily rate.9U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Holidays Work Schedules and Pay
Private employers have no equivalent obligation. The Fair Labor Standards Act does not require holiday pay, time off, or a premium rate for working on a federal holiday.10eCFR. 29 CFR 778.219 – Pay for Forgoing Holidays and Unused Leave Whether you get the day off or extra pay depends on your employer’s policy or your union contract. One general rule still applies: if holiday hours push a non-exempt employee past 40 hours in the workweek, the extra hours must be paid at least time-and-a-half. That is standard overtime, not a holiday premium.
Travel, TSA, and National Parks
Essential federal services keep running on holidays. TSA screens passengers every day of the year, though staffing and wait times move with the crowds during holiday travel surges.
National park grounds, trails, and scenic roads generally stay open, but visitor centers, ranger stations, and administrative offices often close or run reduced hours. The National Park Service notes that hours vary by site.11National Park Service. Operating Hours and Seasons Check the individual park’s page before you go, particularly for the July 3 observed holiday in 2026, when a closure may not line up with what people expect from a “Fourth of July weekend” trip.
