What the Written Exam Covers
The written test is multiple-choice and evaluates cognitive abilities, work styles, and background information.6Suffolk County Police Department. Frequently Asked Questions Question areas include:
- Situational judgment: hypothetical law enforcement scenarios where you choose the best course of action
- Reading comprehension: passages you read closely and answer questions about
- Logical reasoning: pattern recognition and drawing conclusions from information
- Following written directions: multi-step instructions where accuracy matters more than speed
- Behavioral assessment: questions designed to gauge temperament and integrity
The format is standardized across testing locations. Because this is a competitive exam, your score relative to other candidates decides your ranking rather than a simple pass. Every point counts. The gap between the top 100 and the top 500 on the eligible list often decides whether you get a call during the life of the list.
Veteran Preference Points
New York law adds points to passing scores for veterans, applied after grading. Non-disabled veterans receive five additional points on a competitive exam for original appointment; disabled veterans receive ten.9New York State Senate. The Rest of the Hiring Process
The exam is the first step, not the whole path. Candidates whose names are reached on the list face a physical fitness test, a background investigation, a polygraph, a psychological evaluation with written and oral components, and a full medical exam.10Suffolk County Police Department. The fitness screening has three parts: sit-ups in one minute, push-ups without stopping, and a 1.5-mile run. Minimum times and counts vary by age and sex, and you must pass all three components to move on.11Suffolk County Police Department. Physical Fitness Screening
On the background side, New York’s Municipal Police Training Council regulations treat an applicant as unfit if, within three years of applying, they engaged in certain criminal activity — whether or not they were formally charged. That covers any felony, sex offenses, assault, fraud, forgery, perjury, bribery of a public official, and obstruction. Older conduct can still disqualify you if the agency finds it reflects on your character.12New York Division of Criminal Justice Services. Standards and Procedures for Police Officer Candidates – 9 NYCRR Part 6000 New York law also lets prospective law enforcement employers access sealed criminal records; you’re entitled to a copy of any sealed records obtained and a chance to explain them.13New York State Senate.
