Student loan deferment is a federal program that lets you temporarily stop making payments on your Direct Loans without going into default, provided you fit one of the eligibility categories written into federal law. Whether it costs you money depends on which loans you hold: Direct Subsidized Loans accrue no interest during the pause, while Direct Unsubsidized and PLUS Loans keep racking up interest the entire time.1Federal Student Aid. Master Promissory Note for Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans The categories that qualify you are set by statute, not by your servicer’s discretion, so the first question is always whether your situation fits one of them.
Who Qualifies
The Higher Education Act defines the categories of borrowers who can defer Direct Loans. You cannot pause payments simply because money is tight; you have to fit one of these categories and document it.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087e – Terms and Conditions of Loans
In-School Enrollment
If you’re enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school, your loans go into deferment. This usually happens automatically because your school reports enrollment through the National Student Loan Data System, and your servicer applies the deferment without a form from you.3Federal Student Aid. NSLDS Enrollment Reporting Guide February 2026 Graduate fellowship programs and Department-approved rehabilitation training programs for individuals with disabilities also qualify.
Parent PLUS borrowers have a related path. If you took out a Direct PLUS Loan on or after July 1, 2008, for your child, you can defer while the student stays enrolled at least half-time, plus six additional months after they drop below half-time. Eligibility depends on the student’s enrollment, not yours.4Federal Student Aid. Parent PLUS Borrower Deferment Request
Unemployment
You qualify if you’re receiving unemployment benefits or actively seeking but unable to find full-time work. One rule on the form catches people out: if a public or private employment agency exists within 50 miles of your address, you must register with it. School placement offices, temp agencies, and online job boards do not count for this purpose.5Federal Student Aid. Unemployment Deferment Request
Economic Hardship
You qualify if you receive federal or state public assistance such as SNAP, TANF, or SSI, or if your monthly income falls below 150% of the federal poverty guideline for your family size and state. For 2026, that threshold for a single person in the contiguous 48 states works out to roughly $23,940 per year.6Federal Student Aid. Peace Corps Student Loans The deferment renews in one-year increments, so you reapply each year.
Military Service
Active duty during a war, military operation, or national emergency qualifies you for the full period of service. National Guard members and reservists on qualifying duty during those conditions are covered too. The deferment continues for 180 days after the qualifying service ends.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087e – Terms and Conditions of Loans
Cancer Treatment
If you’re receiving treatment for cancer, you can defer for the entire treatment period plus six months afterward, with no fixed cap. This category has a benefit the others don’t: interest does not accrue on any loan type during cancer treatment deferment, including Unsubsidized and PLUS Loans.9Federal Student Aid. How Long You Can Defer
Unemployment and economic hardship deferments each carry a cumulative lifetime cap of 36 months across all your federal loans. The months don’t have to run consecutively; you can use them in chunks until you’ve exhausted the total.6Federal Student Aid. Economic Hardship Deferment Request
In-school, military, and cancer treatment deferments have no cumulative time limit. They last as long as the qualifying condition does.
What Deferment Actually Costs
This is where deferment can quietly add thousands to your balance if you’re not tracking it. The rules split by loan type:
- Direct Subsidized Loans: the government pays the interest during deferment. Your balance stays flat.
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans: interest keeps accruing. When deferment ends, any unpaid interest capitalizes, meaning it’s added to your principal. You then owe interest on the larger amount going forward.
- Direct PLUS Loans (parent and graduate): same treatment as unsubsidized. Interest accrues and capitalizes.
- Cancer treatment deferment: interest does not accrue on any loan type.
The statute is explicit: for subsidized loans, interest “shall not accrue” during deferment; for unsubsidized and PLUS loans, interest “shall accrue and be capitalized or paid by the borrower.”2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087e – Terms and Conditions of Loans If you hold unsubsidized loans and can afford interest-only payments during the pause, making them prevents capitalization. Your servicer won’t require those payments, but the option is worth taking when you can.
How to Apply
All deferment types use standardized federal forms available through Federal Student Aid or your servicer’s portal. Each form asks for your Social Security number, contact information, and documentation specific to the category you’re claiming.
What you send with the form depends on the category:
- In-school: usually handled automatically through enrollment reporting. If it isn’t, your registrar can provide verification or sign the form directly.
- Unemployment: proof you’re receiving benefits, or documentation of your job search and employment agency registration.5Federal Student Aid. Unemployment Deferment Request
- Economic hardship: proof of public assistance, or recent tax returns or pay stubs showing income below the 150% threshold.
- Military: deployment orders or a certification from a commanding officer.
- Cancer treatment: documentation from your treating physician or facility confirming treatment dates.10Federal Student Aid. Cancer Treatment Deferment Request
Most servicers accept forms digitally. Manually submitted requests generally take about 10 business days to process; online submissions can be handled within 24 hours.
One rule matters more than any other in this process: keep making your regular payments until you receive written confirmation the deferment is approved. Skipping payments on the assumption of approval can trigger a late charge of up to 6% of the overdue installment if you go more than 30 days past due, and your servicer can report the delinquency to credit bureaus.11eCFR. 34 CFR 685.202 – Charges for Which Direct Loan Program Borrowers Are Responsible
Deferment and Loan Forgiveness: The Blind Spot
This is the biggest financial trap for borrowers who might also qualify for forgiveness. Deferment pauses your payments, but it also pauses your progress toward forgiveness.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
PSLF requires 120 qualifying monthly payments while you work for a qualifying employer. Months in deferment generally do not count toward that 120, because you aren’t making payments.12Federal Student Aid. Public Service Loan Forgiveness Questions and Answers If you work in public service and earn a low income, enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan with a $0 monthly payment will count toward PSLF; deferment will not. Over years, that gap can cost you an entire round of qualifying payments.
A limited buyback option exists. If you already have 120 months of qualifying employment and buying back deferment months would bring you to 120 qualifying payments, you can pay retroactively to receive PSLF credit for that time.
Income-Driven Repayment Forgiveness
IDR plans forgive any remaining balance after 20 or 25 years of qualifying payments. Time in deferment typically doesn’t count toward those timelines either. A $0 payment on an IDR plan counts as a qualifying month; a month in deferment doesn’t, even though the effect on your wallet is identical.13Federal Student Aid. IDR Account Adjustment
Deferment vs. Forbearance
Both let you pause payments, but the treatment of interest and the eligibility rules differ.
During deferment, interest does not accrue on Direct Subsidized Loans. During forbearance, interest accrues on every loan type, no exceptions.14Federal Student Aid. Get Temporary Relief – Deferment and Forbearance Deferment also requires you to fit one of the statutory categories above. Forbearance is broader: your servicer has discretion to grant it for financial difficulty, medical expenses, high debt-to-income ratios, medical or dental residency, AmeriCorps service, and National Guard duty that doesn’t rise to the deferment standard.
If you qualify for deferment and hold subsidized loans, deferment is almost always the better choice because of the interest protection. If all your loans are unsubsidized, the financial difference between the two is small.
How Deferment Affects Your Credit
A properly reported deferment does not damage your credit. Your servicer flags the account as “deferred” rather than delinquent, and the paused status is treated as neutral. The risk arises only if you stop paying before approval is confirmed, because even a short gap can generate a delinquency report.
If Your Request Is Denied
A denial usually comes down to missing documentation or a failure to meet a specific criterion on the form. Call your servicer first to find out exactly why; often the fix is a single additional document. If you can’t resolve the dispute through the servicer, you can escalate to the Federal Student Aid Ombudsman Group, which mediates borrower complaints.15USAGov. Resolve Student Loan Payment Problems
Forbearance can serve as a short-term bridge while you sort out a denial, since it doesn’t require you to fit a statutory category. The tradeoff is interest accrual on all loan types.
Private Loans, FFEL, and Perkins
Everything above applies to federal Direct Loans. Private student loans operate under separate rules; lenders are not required by federal law to offer deferment, and the terms are whatever your contract says.16CFPB. Is Forbearance or Deferment Available for Private Student Loans Contact your lender to see what your contract provides.
If you borrowed before 2010, you may hold FFEL Program loans, which have access to most of the same deferment categories as Direct Loans. Cancer treatment deferment is available for FFEL loans made on or after September 28, 2018, or that had already entered repayment by that date.10Federal Student Aid. Cancer Treatment Deferment Request Federal Perkins Loans, last disbursed in 2017, mirror the Direct Loan deferment categories and add a six-month post-deferment grace period before payments resume.17Federal Student Aid. Perkins Repayment Plans, Forbearance, Deferment, Discharge, and Cancellation To check what you hold, log in at studentaid.gov.
When Deferment Ends
Once the deferment expires or you no longer meet the qualifying condition, Direct Loans return to active repayment without a grace period. Perkins Loans are the exception, with the six-month post-deferment cushion noted above. Your servicer resumes billing at the same plan and amount you had before, unless you contact them to change plans.
If your finances have changed during the pause, this is the moment to look at income-driven repayment, which sets your monthly payment based on income and family size, potentially as low as $0. Those $0 IDR payments count toward forgiveness timelines; deferment months generally don’t. For borrowers pursuing PSLF or expecting long-term relief, moving from deferment to an income-driven plan once deferment ends is usually the stronger financial move.18Federal Student Aid.
