The U.S. Department of State’s Aruba travel advisory sits at Level 1, meaning you should exercise normal precautions — the same tier assigned to most of Western Europe.1U.S. Department of State. What Level 1 Means for Aruba
Level 1 is the lowest of the State Department’s four tiers. No widespread security threats or civil unrest are flagged for Aruba. The concerns the advisory does raise are the ordinary ones: petty theft, especially pickpocketing around beaches, rental car pickup lots, and resort common areas. Lock valuables up or keep them on you, and don’t leave bags on the sand.
Two natural hazards get attention. Strong ocean currents along the northern and eastern coasts can catch swimmers off guard, so stick to marked areas on the calmer western and southern shores. Aruba sits about 12 degrees north of the equator, well south of the Caribbean’s hurricane belt, and direct hurricane strikes are exceptionally rare. The last close call was Hurricane Felix in 2007, which passed to the north with moderate wind and rain. Brief showers are possible during the June-through-November Atlantic hurricane season, but they tend to pass quickly.
Entry Requirements for U.S. Citizens
Your passport must be valid through your entire stay and have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.2U.S. Department of State. Aruba International Travel Information You also need a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover accommodations and food. A credit card statement or bank printout usually satisfies the funds question, though immigration officers have discretion on what they accept.
Every visitor must complete the online Embarkation and Disembarkation Card (ED Card) before arriving.3Aruba Online ED Card. Aruba Online ED Card The digital form replaces the old paper card and collects travel, accommodation, and contact details. Fill it out at the official ED Card site before you board, since airlines may check for the confirmation at the gate.
U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days. Longer stays require an extension through Aruba’s immigration department, and you have to apply before the initial 30 days run out.
The $20 Sustainability Fee
Since December 2024, non-resident visitors pay a $20 sustainability fee as part of the ED Card process.4Aruba Wastewater Sustainable Solutions. Sustainability Fee Policy Children under eight are exempt. Beginning July 2025, anyone returning to Aruba within one year of a previous visit qualifies for an automatic exemption. The fee is non-refundable and is collected digitally when you submit the ED Card.
Customs Rules on Arrival
If you’re carrying more than $11,000 in cash or monetary instruments into or out of Aruba, you must declare it to the Aruban customs department (Departamento di Aduana).2U.S. Department of State. Money and Securities Failing to declare can bring fines or confiscation. Firearms, ammunition, and certain agricultural products are generally prohibited without specific permits.
Travelers 16 and older can bring in limited quantities of alcohol and tobacco duty-free for personal use: 200 cigarettes, or 25 cigars, or 50 cigarillos, or 250 grams of loose tobacco — pick one category, not all — plus 1 liter of spirits.6Departamento di Aduana. Alcohol and Tobacco
U.S. Pre-clearance at Queen Beatrix Airport
Queen Beatrix International Airport is one of the few Caribbean airports with a full U.S. Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance facility. You clear U.S. immigration and customs in Aruba before boarding, then arrive in the States as a domestic passenger. In late 2025, CBP launched an Enhanced Passenger Processing system at the Aruba facility that uses facial biometric technology to match your face against your passport data. In most cases, U.S. citizens no longer hand over a physical passport unless flagged for additional screening. The system requires no pre-enrollment and applies automatically to U.S. citizens departing through pre-clearance.
The departure tax — $36.75 for U.S.-bound passengers and $33.50 for other international flights — is already included in your airline ticket, so nothing is collected at the airport.8VisitAruba.com. Local Laws That Catch Americans Off Guard
Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with its own legal system. One difference matters more than any other for visitors: Aruba has no bail system. Drug laws are strict. Possessing, using, or selling any illegal drug, including all forms of cannabis, can bring heavy fines and imprisonment. It does not matter that marijuana is legal in your home state. Aruba treats it as an illegal substance, and bringing cannabis products, including edibles and CBD oil, onto the island is a criminal offense.
Driving in Aruba
Aruba drives on the right, and a valid U.S. driver’s license is accepted with no international driving permit required. Right turns on red are prohibited. You must yield to vehicles already in a roundabout before entering. U-turns are often restricted. If you’re in an accident, do not move your car: call 100 for police, then contact the rental car company and your insurance provider. Seat belts are required for all occupants, children must ride in the back seat, children under five need a child safety seat, and motorcyclists must wear helmets.
Sunscreen and Plastics
Aruba has banned sunscreen containing oxybenzone to protect its coral reefs. Since July 2020, importing, selling, or producing oxybenzone-based sunscreens on the island carries penalties. Pack reef-safe sunscreen with mineral-based active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Single-use plastic bags are also banned island-wide, so bring a reusable one for shopping.

The United States has no embassy in Aruba.
