If your SSI was not deposited on the day you expected, the cause is usually one of four things: the payment date shifted because the first of the month fell on a weekend or holiday, your bank information is wrong or your account is closed, the SSA reduced or suspended your benefit because something in your income, resources, or living situation changed, or the SSA is recovering an overpayment. Check the date first, then your bank, then your eligibility notices. If the money is genuinely missing, you can report it to the SSA and, in some cases, request an immediate payment at your local office.
Check the Payment Date Before Assuming Anything Is Wrong
SSI is scheduled for the first of every month.1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments – 2026-2027 When the first falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA moves the deposit to the last business day before that. If February 1 is a Sunday, the money lands on Friday, January 30. This trips people up most often around New Year’s, when the December and January payments can arrive within a day or two of each other and the next payment feels overdue when it isn’t.

Rule Out a Banking Problem
Sometimes the payment left the SSA on time but never reached you. A closed account, a stale routing or account number, or a recent switch between banks can bounce the deposit back. Call your bank and ask whether a deposit from the Treasury was received, rejected, or returned in the last few days.

Reasons the SSA May Have Reduced or Stopped Your Payment
If the date is right and your bank has nothing on record, the payment likely never went out because something changed in your file. Check your mail and your My Social Security messages for a notice; the SSA sends written notice before it reduces or suspends benefits.
Income Went Up
SSI is need-based, and the payment is recalculated whenever your income changes. The SSA ignores the first $20 of most monthly income and the first $65 of earned income, then reduces your SSI by $1 for every $2 you earn above that.5Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income – Income Unearned income, such as a Social Security retirement or disability check, a pension, or a cash gift, reduces SSI dollar-for-dollar after the $20 exclusion. A spouse’s income counts if you live together. In 2026 the maximum federal SSI is $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple, so once countable income crosses that line, the payment drops to zero.6Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet The SSA sometimes applies these adjustments retroactively when it learns about income you didn’t report.
Your Bank Balance or Assets Went Over the Limit
The resource limits are $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple in 2026.6Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet A lump sum like back pay or an inheritance can push you over for a month even if you spend it down later; a tax refund is excluded for 12 months.7Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income – Resources Being over the limit on even one day of the month can cost you that month’s payment.
Your Living Arrangement Changed
If someone else pays your rent, mortgage, or utilities, the SSA treats that as “in-kind support and maintenance” and reduces your SSI. The reduction is capped at roughly $351 per month in 2026 (one-third of the federal benefit rate plus $20). The same reduction applies if you move into someone else’s home and pay less than your share of housing costs. As of late 2024, food help from others no longer counts in this calculation; only shelter does.8Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income – Living Arrangements
You’re in the Middle of a Redetermination
The SSA reviews SSI eligibility every one to six years, and any reported change or new information can trigger a review outside that cycle.9Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Redeterminations10Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.204 – Redeterminations of SSI Eligibility Payments can be held or adjusted while the review is open. If a questionnaire came in the mail, return it right away; slow responses are a common reason payments sit.
An Overpayment Is Being Recovered
If the SSA decided it paid you more than you were owed, it withholds from future checks to get that money back. The standard recovery rate is capped at the lesser of 10 percent of your total monthly income (including your SSI) or your full monthly benefit; the cap does not apply if the SSA found fraud or intentional misrepresentation.11Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.571 – 10-Percent Limitation of Recoupment Rate You should have received a written notice with the amount and the recovery plan before withholding started.12Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Overpayments If you think the overpayment is wrong, you have 60 days from the notice to request reconsideration, and you can file the Request for Waiver of Overpayment Recovery (SSA-632-BK) if repaying would cause hardship or the overpayment wasn’t your fault.13Social Security Administration. Ask Us to Waive an Overpayment
Incarceration or Time Outside the U.S.
SSI stops after a full calendar month of incarceration. Payments can resume the month you’re released, but if you were locked up for 12 consecutive months or more, you have to file a new SSI application.14Social Security Administration. Benefits After Incarceration – What You Need To Know Leaving the United States for 30 or more consecutive days also suspends payments, and after you come back you have to be continuously in the U.S. for 30 days before benefits restart.15Social Security Administration. How to Report a Missing Payment
Once you’ve checked the date, checked your bank, and looked for any SSA notice, report the missing deposit. Call 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local Social Security office; the office locator is at ssa.gov/locator, and the SSA recommends an appointment.16Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment Have your Social Security number, the expected payment date, and anything your bank told you ready before you call.
The SSA will start a payment trace with the U.S. Treasury and your bank. Traces can take several weeks. Keep watching your account and your My Social Security portal while it’s open. If you think the payment was diverted to an account you don’t control, tell the representative you suspect fraud so the case goes to investigators, and be prepared to file a police report.
If You Can’t Wait Weeks
A missing SSI check turns into a rent or medication crisis fast, and the SSA has two ways to move money to you sooner. Neither is automatic. You have to ask at the local office.
An immediate payment is for people already receiving benefits when the SSA agrees money is owed and hasn’t reached you. It’s processed at the local office and cannot exceed $5,000 or the amount actually due, whichever is less.17Social Security Administration. Immediate Payment (IP) Criteria and Process This is the option to ask for when your regular deposit simply didn’t arrive.
An emergency advance payment is different: it’s for people applying for SSI who look likely to qualify but haven’t been approved yet, and who face a financial emergency such as being unable to afford food, shelter, or medical care.18Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.520 – Emergency Advance Payments
Appeal Deadlines If the SSA Cut You Off
When the SSA reduces or suspends your SSI, the notice will explain your appeal rights. The general deadline is 60 days from the date you receive the decision to request reconsideration.19Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration Filing after 60 days requires showing good cause, which is a harder standard.
If the SSA is ending your benefits because it decided you are no longer disabled, there is a shorter 10-day window that matters. Request reconsideration and ask for continued benefits within 10 days of the cessation notice to keep payments coming at the previous rate while the appeal is pending. For non-medical reductions or suspensions, such as income or resource changes, the SSA has a separate process for continuing payments during an appeal.20Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.996 – Continued Payments Pending Reconsideration If you elect continued payments and lose the appeal, the SSA treats those payments as an overpayment you’ll be asked to return, though you can then file a waiver request.
