Your Social Security payment arrives on one of three Wednesdays each month, and the day depends on your date of birth. If you were born on the 1st through the 10th, you’re paid on the second Wednesday. Born the 11th through the 20th, the third Wednesday. Born the 21st through the 31st, the fourth Wednesday. That is the Social Security payment schedule by birth date for anyone who filed for retirement, survivors, or disability benefits after April 1997 and does not also receive Supplemental Security Income.1Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day

The structure of the schedule repeats year after year. The SSA publishes fresh dates each year because the specific Wednesdays shift with the calendar.
Who Gets Paid on the Third of the Month Instead
The Wednesday cycle doesn’t cover everyone. Three groups receive their Social Security payment on the 3rd of each month regardless of birth date:
- Anyone who applied for benefits before May 1, 1997. Before 1997, the 3rd was the single payday for all Social Security recipients, and these longtime beneficiaries were kept on that schedule when the SSA moved newer filers to Wednesdays.1Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day
- People who receive both Social Security and SSI. The Social Security portion arrives on the 3rd; the SSI portion arrives on the 1st.2Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026
- Beneficiaries living outside the United States, no matter when they filed.3Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits
If you’ve been receiving benefits since before May 1997 and have been budgeting around the 3rd for decades, nothing about the Wednesday schedule applies to you.
SSI Follows a Different Schedule
Supplemental Security Income isn’t tied to your birthday at all. SSI payments go out on the 1st of every month.4Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment moves to the last business day before it. If you collect only SSI, your birth date has no bearing on when the money arrives. If you collect both SSI and Social Security, you’ll see two deposits each month: one on the 1st for SSI and one on the 3rd for Social Security.
Weekend and Holiday Shifts
When a scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA sends the payment on the last business day before that date.5Social Security Administration. Social Security Act 708 – Delivery of Benefit Checks If the 3rd lands on a Saturday, payments arrive Friday the 2nd. If the 1st is a Sunday, SSI arrives the preceding Friday.6Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates The same rule covers a scheduled Wednesday that happens to be a federal holiday.
These shifts are automatic. You don’t need to contact the SSA or your bank. A payment that arrives early because of a holiday adjustment still counts as that month’s benefit; the SSA does not reverse it for landing before the calendar month ends.5Social Security Administration. Social Security Act 708 – Delivery of Benefit Checks
Early Access Through Your Bank
Some banks and financial apps release Social Security deposits a day or two before the official payment date. The SSA transmits payment files to banks in advance, and certain institutions post the funds as soon as they see the incoming transfer instead of waiting for the settlement date. Whether you get early access depends on your bank’s policy, not on anything the SSA controls. If early access matters to you, ask your bank directly rather than trying to time it against the SSA’s calendar.
If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive on Time
Check with your bank or financial institution first. Many delays start on the bank’s side rather than the SSA’s.7Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment? The SSA asks you to wait three additional business days past your scheduled payment date before reporting a missing payment.2Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026 That window covers the ordinary processing delays that occasionally happen in the banking system.
If the payment still hasn’t arrived after those three business days, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit your local field office to file a non-receipt claim.7Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment? Reporting quickly lets the SSA trace and reissue the payment sooner.
If you recently switched banks or updated your direct deposit information close to a payment date, the change may not take effect until the next payment cycle.
