Four Ways to Make the Switch
Any of these methods will accomplish the same thing. The online route is the fastest.
Online. Sign in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov. If you already receive benefits or are enrolled in Medicare, open the My Profile tab and update your direct deposit information there.8Social Security Administration. How Can I Change My Address or Direct Deposit Information for My Social Security Benefits or Supplemental Security Income Payments The SSA describes this as the fastest way to make the change.1Social Security Administration. Update Direct Deposit
Through your bank. Many banks can transmit your updated direct deposit information to Social Security on your behalf. Ask a teller or call your bank’s customer service line to see whether they offer this.
By phone. Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. Wait times are usually shorter earlier in the day and later in the week.9Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone A representative will verify your identity and update your payment method during the call.
In person. Visit your local Social Security office with identification and your bank account details. Staff can enter the change while you wait, which helps catch typos in account or routing numbers on the spot.
What to Have Ready
Whichever method you use, gather this information first:
- Your Social Security number.
- Your bank’s routing transit number and your account number. Both appear at the bottom of a personal check or in your online banking portal.10Social Security Administration. Information You Need To Apply For Retirement Benefits Or Medicare
- Confirmation of whether the account is checking or savings.
If you are enrolling on paper rather than online or by phone, use FMS Form 1200 for Social Security and SSI payments. The general-purpose Standard Form 1199A is for other federal payments; FMS 1200 is the correct form for Social Security, SSI, railroad retirement, and civil non-military federal retirement.11Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Forms Using the wrong form can delay your enrollment.
When to Expect Your First Electronic Payment
After you submit the change, allow time for the government to verify your account with your financial institution. During that processing window, your next payment could still arrive by the old method. Watch your account or card on your scheduled payment date to confirm the electronic deposit arrives.
Social Security payment dates depend on your birth date:12Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026-2027
- Born the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday of the month.
- Born the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday of the month.
- Born the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday of the month.
Two groups follow a different schedule. If you started receiving Social Security before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security payment arrives on the 3rd of each month. When a scheduled date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deposit posts on the preceding business day. Direct deposits are typically available first thing in the morning. If a payment doesn’t arrive on the expected date, wait three additional business days before calling the SSA.
If You Truly Can’t Use Electronic Payments
