Social Security Deposit Schedule: Payment Wednesdays by Birthday

The Social Security deposit schedule by birthday puts your monthly payment on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, depending on the day you were born. If you were born from the 1st through the 10th, you’re paid on the second Wednesday. Born 11th through 20th, the third Wednesday. Born 21st through 31st, the fourth Wednesday.1Social Security Administration. Which Wednesday Is Yours

  • Born on the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday of the month.
  • Born on the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday of the month.
  • Born on the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday of the month.1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

The Social Security Administration spreads payments across three Wednesdays so that millions of transactions don’t hit the banking system on a single day.2Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits Your assigned Wednesday doesn’t change month to month; only the calendar dates it lands on do.

When You’re Paid on Someone Else’s Birthday

If your benefit is based on another person’s work record, the payment date follows that worker’s birth date, not yours. A spouse collecting on a retired worker’s record, or a survivor collecting on a deceased spouse’s record, gets paid on the Wednesday tied to the worker’s birthday. Everyone drawing from the same work record is paid on the same day.3Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits

Who Gets Paid on the 3rd Instead

The birthday-based Wednesday schedule doesn’t cover everyone. Three groups are paid on the 3rd of each month:

  • People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997. They stayed on the original fixed schedule when the SSA introduced the staggered Wednesdays that year.2Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits
  • People who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income. Their Social Security portion arrives on the 3rd, with SSI on the 1st.1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026
  • Beneficiaries living outside the United States.

If none of these apply to you and you filed after May 1997, use the Wednesday tied to your birth date.

How Weekends and Holidays Shift the Date

When your scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA moves the deposit to the last business day before it.4Social Security Administration. When Will I Get My Benefits if the Payment Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday? If the 3rd lands on a Sunday, your payment arrives on Friday the 1st. If a scheduled Wednesday is a federal holiday, you’re paid Tuesday. Federal law requires this early-delivery approach for Social Security, SSI, and Special Veterans Benefits.5Social Security Administration. 42 USC 909 – Delivery of Benefit Checks

Your First Payment After You Enroll

Social Security benefits are paid the month after the month they cover. Your July benefit arrives in August.6Social Security Administration. What You Need to Know When You Get Retirement or Survivors Benefits When you apply, you choose an enrollment month, and your first payment arrives the following month on the Wednesday (or the 3rd) that matches your schedule.7Social Security Administration. Timing Your First Payment

You can apply up to four months before your chosen enrollment month, which gives you time to set up direct deposit before the first payment date. If you’re retiring mid-year, plan for that one-month gap between your last paycheck and your first deposit.

When a Deposit Doesn’t Show Up

The SSA asks you to allow three additional business days past your expected payment date before reporting a missing payment.1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026 A practical sequence:

  • On the payment day itself, wait through the end of the business day. Banks post federal deposits in batches, and yours may land later than usual.
  • One or two days later, call your bank to check for a processing delay, and log in to your my Social Security account to see the payment status.
  • Three or more days later, contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to report the missing payment and request a trace. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time.8Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment?

Call the bank before calling the SSA. Most late deposits sit at the financial institution, and the bank can usually resolve it faster than a federal payment trace.

When the Deposit Amount Looks Off

A deposit that arrives on time but for the wrong amount usually traces back to one of two things: tax withholding or the annual cost-of-living adjustment.

You can ask the SSA to withhold federal income tax from your benefit by filing IRS Form W-4V. The form limits you to four flat rates: 7%, 10%, 12%, or 22% of your monthly benefit; no custom percentages or dollar amounts are allowed.9Internal Revenue Service. Voluntary Withholding Request If you recently started, changed, or stopped withholding, that’s the most likely reason your deposit doesn’t match last month’s.

Social Security and SSI benefits increased by 2.8% for 2026 under the annual cost-of-living adjustment.10Social Security Administration. Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Information The higher amount appears in your January 2026 payment. If your deposit looks different from last year and you haven’t touched your withholding or Medicare premium deductions, the COLA is almost certainly the reason.
