Your Social Security payment day is a specific Wednesday of the month tied to your birth date: the second Wednesday if you were born on the 1st through the 10th, the third Wednesday if you were born on the 11th through the 20th, and the fourth Wednesday if you were born on the 21st through the 31st. That rule covers most people receiving retirement, disability, or survivor benefits who filed on or after May 1, 1997. A few groups follow a different calendar, and SSI has its own schedule entirely.1Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits
How Your Birth Date Sets Your Wednesday
- Born 1st–10th: second Wednesday of the month.
- Born 11th–20th: third Wednesday.
- Born 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday.
If your benefit is drawn from someone else’s work record, the assigned Wednesday follows that worker’s birthday, not yours. A spouse collecting on a retired worker’s record, for example, is paid on the Wednesday that matches the worker’s birth date.1Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits
One timing detail catches people off guard: Social Security pays benefits in the month after they’re earned. Your January benefit arrives on your assigned Wednesday in February.2Social Security Administration. When To Start Receiving Retirement Benefits
Who Gets Paid on the 3rd Instead
Several groups skip the Wednesday schedule and get paid on the 3rd of each month regardless of birth date. You are on the 3rd if any of these apply:3Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates
- You started collecting benefits before May 1997.
- You receive both Social Security and SSI.
- Your income is deemed to an SSI recipient.
- Your state pays your Medicare premiums.
- You live in a foreign country.
- Your payments are subject to garnishment or a tax levy.
If the 3rd falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, payment moves to the last business day before the 3rd.3Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates
SSI Payment Dates
Supplemental Security Income runs on its own calendar. SSI is paid on the 1st of each month, and your birth date has nothing to do with it.4Social Security Administration. Weekend and Holiday Shifts
When your scheduled payment day lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, you get paid on the most recent business day before it.5Social Security Administration. When Will I Get My Benefits if the Payment Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday? Money arrives a day or two early, never late.
SSI recipients see this shift often because the 1st lands on weekends several times a year. In 2026, SSI payments arrive early in these months:
- January 2026 SSI: paid December 31, 2025 (the 1st is New Year’s Day).
- February 2026 SSI: paid January 30 (the 1st is a Sunday).
- March 2026 SSI: paid February 27 (the 1st is a Sunday).
- August 2026 SSI: paid July 31 (the 1st is a Saturday).
- November 2026 SSI: paid October 30 (the 1st is a Sunday).
When an early SSI deposit lands in the same calendar month as the previous month’s payment, it can look like a double payment. It isn’t. The second deposit is next month’s benefit arriving ahead of schedule.4Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026-2027

If a Payment Doesn’t Arrive
Start with your bank or credit union. Financial institutions sometimes have posting delays that have nothing to do with the SSA.
