Early projections put the 2027 Social Security COLA estimate somewhere between roughly 3.3% and 4.7%, notably higher than the 2.8% adjustment beneficiaries received for 2026. The Social Security Administration will announce the official figure in mid-October 2026, after the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the July, August, and September 2026 inflation data the formula depends on.1MassLive. 2027 COLA Predictions Signal a Shift for Millions
What the Current Estimates Say
Estimates for the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment have been rising as inflation data has come in stronger through the spring of 2026.
The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan advocacy group that tracks the COLA closely, projected a 3.8% increase in its June 2026 update, down slightly from 3.9% in May. Its running COLA Watch page showed a separate 3.3% figure around the same time, which gives a sense of how quickly the number moves as new monthly data arrives.2CNBC. Social Security COLA 2027 Inflation Estimate3The Senior Citizens League. COLA Watch
Independent Social Security and Medicare analyst Mary Johnson landed higher. Her mid-June 2026 estimate was 4.7%, up from 4.2% in May, and she said there was a “considerable likelihood” the figure could climb further depending on later data.4Morningstar. Social Security’s COLA Could Be 4.7% in 2027 Johnson’s projection was driven by sharp year-over-year jumps in specific CPI-W categories: fuel oil up 64.1%, gasoline up 40.7%, and airfare up 25%.2CNBC. What That Means in Dollars
The 2.8% adjustment for 2026 added about $56 to the average retired worker’s monthly check. Against that same baseline:
- A 3.3% COLA would add roughly $67 a month.
- A 3.8% COLA would add roughly $79 a month.
- A 4.7% COLA would add roughly $98 a month.6CNBC. Social Security COLA 2027
Your own increase will scale with your current benefit. Multiply your monthly amount by the percentage to see the effect on your check.
How the Number Is Calculated
By law, the COLA is tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes each month. SSA takes the average CPI-W reading for the third quarter of the current year (July, August, and September) and compares it to the third-quarter average from the last year a COLA took effect. If the index rose, the percentage change, rounded to the nearest tenth, becomes the COLA. If it didn’t rise, there’s no adjustment.7Social Security Administration. Latest Cost-of-Living Adjustment
The 2026 COLA came from comparing a Q3 2025 CPI-W average of 317.265 to a Q3 2024 average of 308.729, which produced 2.8%. The 2027 figure will use the same method against that 317.265 baseline.7Social Security Administration. Latest Cost-of-Living Adjustment Only July through September 2026 matters for the final number. Everything before July is a preview, useful for projections but not part of the calculation.
That’s why estimates keep shifting. Analysts extrapolate from partial data, and each new monthly CPI-W release can pull the projection up or down.
Why Inflation Is Running Higher in 2026
Trailing 12-month inflation climbed from 2.4% in February 2026 to 4.2% by May, the highest reading in three years.4Morningstar. Social Security’s COLA Could Be 4.7% in 2027 Two forces are driving the acceleration.
Energy Prices and the Middle East Conflict
The military conflict involving Iran that began in late February 2026 threatened and partially achieved a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 to 25% of global oil and a fifth of liquefied natural gas supplies move. The IMF called it the “largest disruption to the global oil market in its history.”8International Monetary Fund. How the War in the Middle East Is Affecting Energy, Trade and Finance
The Dallas Federal Reserve estimated that a one-quarter closure of the Strait would add 0.6 percentage points to headline PCE inflation, with crude prices peaking at $94 per barrel under a moderate scenario and as high as $115 if a closure persisted for three quarters.9Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Iran War Oil Inflation Research Morgan Stanley estimated that a 10% oil-price rise from a supply shock would lift U.S. headline consumer prices by about 0.35% over three months.10Morgan Stanley. Iran War Oil Inflation Stock Market 2026 Because about a third of global fertilizer shipments also pass through the Strait, the IMF flagged upward pressure on food prices during the Northern Hemisphere planting season.8International Monetary Fund. Trade Tariffs
Tariffs on imported goods have added a separate layer of upward pressure. Certified financial planner Jeffrey Judge put it plainly: “Import tariffs raise consumer prices and that feeds directly into the CPI-W calculation.” Some coverage has labeled the expected larger COLA a “Trump Bump,” but experts note the adjustment is a mathematical output of the CPI-W formula responding to whatever is pushing prices higher, not a policy choice.11U.S. News & World Report. Watch Your Medicare Part B Deduction
For most retirees, Medicare Part B premiums come straight out of the Social Security check, and a premium hike can eat into or wipe out a COLA. A federal “hold harmless” provision keeps a beneficiary’s net Social Security payment from actually declining because of a Part B increase, capping the premium hike at no more than the dollar amount of the COLA.13UnitedHealthcare. The Truth About Your Medicare Part B Premium
The protection has real limits. It covers roughly 70% of Medicare beneficiaries.14The Senior Citizens League. How Rising Medicare Part B Premiums May Impact Your Social Security Benefits People new to Medicare, those who don’t collect Social Security, and higher-income beneficiaries subject to income-related premium surcharges are not protected and can see premiums rise regardless of the COLA.13UnitedHealthcare. The Truth About Your Medicare Part B Premium Even for those who are protected, the hold-harmless rule can leave the entire COLA absorbed by the premium increase.
A Larger COLA Doesn’t Necessarily Mean More Buying Power
The COLA is designed to keep benefits even with inflation, not to increase purchasing power. And research suggests it hasn’t fully done even that. A 2024 study by the Senior Citizens League found that Social Security benefits lost 20% of their buying power between 2010 and 2024. Over that period, COLAs raised benefits by 58%, while the cost of goods and services typical retirees buy rose by 73%.15The Senior Citizens League. Benefits Lost 20% of Buying Power Since 2010 Closing that gap in 2024 would have taken roughly $370 more per month.16The Senior Citizens League. TSCL Loss of Buying Power Report 2024
Part of the reason is the index itself. CPI-W measures price changes for working-age urban wage earners, not retirees, and categories that consume a larger share of a typical senior’s budget have run hotter than the overall index. Financial advisor Stephanie Ford of the Wealth Enhancement Group said “health care and housing costs are rising faster than the COLA itself.”6CNBC. Social Security COLA 2027
There’s also a timing lag. The COLA is calculated from July-through-September data but doesn’t reach beneficiaries until January. If prices spike in the fall, you absorb those costs for months before the adjustment arrives.17Money. Social Security COLA Inflation Report A bigger 2027 check is likely, but so is a bigger grocery bill and a higher Part B premium landing alongside it.
