The Social Security BNC number is a 13-character alphanumeric code printed near the top of most notices the Social Security Administration mails out. BNC stands for Beneficiary Notice Control. It identifies that specific letter, not you, and it replaced the full Social Security Number that used to appear on agency correspondence.
What the BNC Number Is
The BNC is a tracking code SSA employees use to pull up a mailed document and connect it to the right beneficiary’s file. It is not a personal identifier. Two notices sent to the same person in different years, or from different SSA systems, carry completely different BNC numbers.1Social Security Administration. When you call SSA about a letter, a representative can enter the BNC into an internal tool that ties the code back to your Social Security Number and records. That lets them see exactly which notice was sent and when.2Social Security Administration. Social Security Testimony Before Congress

Where to Find It on Your Notice
Look at the first page of the notice, near the top by the date and return address. The BNC appears alongside your name and the notice title. It’s 13 characters, a mix of letters and numbers. It first appeared on Cost of Living Adjustment statements and Social Security Statements and has since expanded to most mailed documents.2Social Security Administration. Not every SSA document has one. Some categories still print the full Social Security Number because the agency treats it as essential to the business process. Those include Social Security cards, benefit applications and application summaries, redeterminations and appeals, representative payee accounting forms, earnings and wage reports, and certain third-party disclosure requests.3Social Security Administration. What You Can and Cannot Do With It
The BNC is not a substitute for your Social Security Number. You cannot use it to apply for credit, verify your identity to a lender, or prove your benefits status to a third party.
Even at SSA, its use is limited. Agency policy prohibits staff from releasing personal information to callers who cannot provide their SSN, and the BNC does not fill in for the SSN during phone identity verification.1Social Security Administration. For mortgage applications and similar verifications where a lender needs SSA to confirm your benefits, the process runs through Form SSA-89. That form requires your full SSN and signed consent. The BNC has no role in it.4Social Security Administration. Authorization for the Social Security Administration To Release Social Security Number Verification
Getting a Replacement Notice or Benefit Letter
Because each BNC belongs to one specific document, there’s no way to look one up on its own. If you need a code from a particular notice, you need the notice itself or a replacement.

If Someone Contacts You About a BNC
Be cautious with anyone who calls asking for a number from your SSA correspondence. Scammers impersonate SSA employees and sometimes reference official-sounding codes, or mail fake letters on official-looking letterhead before calling, to build credibility.
