Social Security Benefit Payment Schedule by Birthday

The Social Security payment schedule by birthday sorts most retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries onto one of three Wednesdays each month. If the worker’s birth date falls on the 1st through the 10th, payment lands on the second Wednesday. Birthdays from the 11th through the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday. That schedule applies if you filed for benefits after April 1997 and do not also receive Supplemental Security Income. Once assigned, your Wednesday stays the same every month, year after year, shifting only when it collides with a federal holiday.

Which Wednesday Is Yours

  • Born 1st–10th: second Wednesday.
  • Born 11th–20th: third Wednesday.
  • Born 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday.

One point trips people up. The birthday that controls the payment day belongs to the “insured individual” — the worker whose earnings record the benefit is drawn from. Who Isn’t on the Birthday Schedule

Several groups receive payments on fixed calendar dates and can ignore the Wednesday cycle entirely.

Supplemental Security Income is paid on the 1st of every month. SSI is a needs-based program with its own timeline, separate from the insurance benefits that follow the birthday rules.4Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits

Anyone whose benefits were filed before May 1997 is paid on the 3rd of every month. That was the universal payment date under the old system, and existing recipients kept their schedule when the birthday-based cycle was introduced.5Social Security Administration. People who collect both Social Security and SSI receive their Social Security payment on the 3rd, with SSI arriving on the 1st. Beneficiaries living in a foreign country are also paid on the 3rd.1Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day

Weekend and Federal Holiday Shifts

When a scheduled payment date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA moves the payment to the last business day before that date. A payment due Saturday arrives Friday. The same rule covers the fixed-date payments. If the 1st or 3rd of a month falls on a weekend, the deposit moves to the preceding Friday.1Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day Months worth watching are January (New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day), November (Veterans Day and Thanksgiving), and December (Christmas).

If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive

Check with your bank or credit union first. Financial institutions occasionally have posting delays that are unrelated to the SSA’s disbursement. If the bank confirms no incoming deposit, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local Social Security office.7Social Security Administration. For electronic payments, the SSA can initiate a trace through the U.S. Treasury to find out what happened to the funds. The process can take several weeks. If the payment was returned because of a closed or incorrect account, it won’t be reissued until you provide updated banking information. Keep a record of the expected date, the amount, and any confirmation numbers the SSA gives you.

The SSA’s own schedule advises allowing three additional mailing days before reporting a missing payment. That guidance was written for paper checks and matters less now that nearly all payments are electronic, but it remains the official position.2Social Security Administration.
