Road tax on a Skoda Kodiaq is a flat £200 a year from the second year onwards for any model registered on or after 1 April 2017. The first year is the expensive and variable one: depending on engine and trim, the one-off first-year charge runs from around £10 for the iV plug-in hybrid to £3,420 for the highest-emitting vRS. Kodiaqs with a list price over £40,000 also pay an Expensive Car Supplement of roughly £440 a year for five years on top of the standard rate.
First-Year VED by Engine
The first time a new Kodiaq is registered, its tax is set entirely by official CO2 emissions. It is a one-off payment and the single biggest variable in the whole tax picture. WLTP combined emissions across the current range look like this:1Skoda Auto. Kodiaq Technical Specifications
- 1.5 TSI petrol (110 kW): 135–151 g/km
- 2.0 TDI diesel (110 kW): 138–155 g/km
- 2.0 TDI diesel 4×4 (142 kW): 156–174 g/km
- 2.0 TSI petrol 4×4 (150 kW): 168–181 g/km
- 2.0 TSI petrol 4×4 vRS (195 kW): 186–193 g/km
- 1.5 TSI iV plug-in hybrid (150 kW): 9–12 g/km
From April 2026, the first-year bands relevant to the range are:2Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. V149 Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026
- 0 g/km: £10
- 151–170 g/km: £1,410
- 171–190 g/km: £2,270
- 191–225 g/km: £3,420
In practice, the entry 1.5 TSI petrol sits at the top of the lower band, and a higher-spec example nudges into the £1,410 bracket. The vRS sits at £2,270, and an example above 190 g/km jumps to £3,420. The iV, at 9–12 g/km, pays the lowest first-year charge. This is a one-off. From the second year, the picture is much simpler.
The £200 Standard Rate From Year Two
Every Kodiaq registered on or after 1 April 2017 pays the same flat rate from the second year onwards, whatever the engine or emissions. For the tax year starting April 2026, that rate is £200.2Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. V149 Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026
Worth flagging if you own or are considering an iV: before April 2025, alternatively fuelled vehicles got a £10 annual discount on the standard rate. That discount is gone. Petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid Kodiaqs all pay the same £200 from year two.3GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax for Electric, Zero and Low Emission Vehicles
The £40,000 List Price Supplement
Higher-spec trims such as the vRS and Laurin & Klement often cross a £40,000 list price once factory-fitted options are added. Where the manufacturer’s original list price is over £40,000, the vehicle attracts the Expensive Car Supplement on top of the standard rate.4GOV.UK. Increase in the Vehicle Excise Duty Expensive Car Supplement Threshold for Zero Emission Cars
The supplement is around £440 a year, and it applies for five years starting from the second year of registration. Combined with the £200 standard rate, the annual bill during those years is about £640. Two things catch people out. The list price includes factory-fitted options such as a panoramic roof or upgraded audio, so a trim that starts below £40,000 can cross the line once you add extras. And it makes no difference if you negotiated a lower price with the dealer; the trigger is the manufacturer’s published list price.
After the five years, the Kodiaq drops back to the standard £200. If you are ordering a Kodiaq that sits close to the threshold, checking the list price with options before you sign can save over £2,000 across the supplement period.
Where the iV Still Saves You Money
The Kodiaq iV no longer has a road tax edge over the rest of the range from year two: everything pays £200. Where the iV still delivers real savings is in company car Benefit in Kind and in business capital allowances.
For 2026/27, the BiK percentages on the Kodiaq range are:5GOV.UK. Calculate Tax on Employees’ Company Cars
- Kodiaq iV (9–12 g/km, 70–129 mile electric range): 7%
- 1.5 TSI petrol (135–151 g/km): 33–36%
- 2.0 TSI 4×4 (168–181 g/km): 37%
- 2.0 TSI vRS (186–193 g/km): 37%
The BiK bill is your P11D value (list price with VAT, delivery and options, excluding first-year road tax) multiplied by that percentage, then taxed at your marginal income tax rate. Take a Kodiaq iV with a P11D value of £42,000: at 7%, the taxable benefit is £2,940. A basic-rate taxpayer pays about £588 a year; a higher-rate taxpayer £1,176. The same P11D on a 2.0 TSI 4×4 at 37% produces a taxable benefit of £15,540, costing a basic-rate taxpayer £3,108 and a higher-rate taxpayer £6,216. Choosing the iV can save a higher-rate driver over £5,000 a year.
For a business buying the vehicle outright, capital allowances also turn on CO2:6GOV.UK. Claim Capital Allowances – Business Cars
- 0 g/km, new and unused: 100% first-year allowance
- 50 g/km or less: 18% writing-down allowance a year (the iV qualifies)
- Over 50 g/km: 6% writing-down allowance a year (all petrol and diesel Kodiaqs)
At 6%, a diesel Kodiaq costing £38,000 yields £2,280 of tax relief in the first year. The same money on a Kodiaq iV at 18% produces £6,840. Over several years the difference is a meaningful cash-flow gap for sole traders and companies alike.
How To Pay
You need one of two reference numbers to tax the vehicle. The V11 reminder the DVLA sends before your tax is due carries a 16-digit reference.7GOV.UK. Register Your Vehicle as Off the Road (SORN) If you have lost it, use the 11-digit reference on your V5C logbook instead.8GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder The DVLA checks automatically that the Kodiaq has a valid MOT if it is over three years old and appears on the national motor insurance database. Either check failing will block the payment until you fix it.
The fastest route is through the GOV.UK vehicle tax service, paying by card or Direct Debit. A Post Office branch that handles vehicle tax will also do it in person, with your V11 or V5C. There is no physical tax disc; the record is digital.
You can pay for 12 months in one go, every 6 months, or monthly by Direct Debit. A single £200 annual payment carries no surcharge. Paying monthly or six-monthly adds a 5% surcharge, so a monthly Direct Debit brings the annual total to £210.9GOV.UK. Selling, SORN, and Penalties
Tax does not transfer with the car. When you sell, the DVLA cancels your tax and posts a refund cheque for any full months remaining, calculated from the date the change is processed; partial months are not refunded.10GOV.UK. What to Do if Your Vehicle Has Been Stolen – Get a Vehicle Tax Refund Direct Debits stop automatically. The buyer must tax the Kodiaq in their own name before driving it.
To keep the car but stop taxing it — during a long trip abroad or over winter, say — you need a Statutory Off Road Notification. Under a SORN the Kodiaq cannot legally be driven or even parked on a public road, except travelling to a pre-booked MOT. Driving it otherwise risks a fine of up to £2,500.11GOV.UK. When You Need to Make a SORN – Overview You can declare SORN online with the V5C or V11 reference, by phone on 0300 123 4321, or by post with a V890. It stays in place until you tax the car again.
If tax lapses without a SORN, the DVLA issues an automatic £80 late licensing penalty by post, reduced to £40 if paid within 33 days.12Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. DVLA Enforcement of Vehicle Tax, Registration and Insurance Offences Ignore it and an out-of-court settlement follows at £30 plus one and a half times the outstanding tax; refuse that and a magistrates’ court can impose £1,000 or five times the tax owed, whichever is greater. The car can also be clamped, with release fees on top. ANPR cameras cross-reference untaxed vehicles across the road network, so the process is fast and largely automated.
