SIE Exam Review: Format, Preparation, and Passing Score

The SIE exam, or Securities Industry Essentials exam, is a FINRA-administered entry-level test that covers foundational securities industry knowledge. It costs $100, is open to anyone 18 or older, and does not require sponsorship from a brokerage firm, which makes it the standard first step for students, career changers, and anyone exploring financial services.1FINRA. What the Exam Covers

The SIE has 75 scored questions across four content areas, and they are not weighted evenly. Two sections together account for three-quarters of the exam, so study time should follow that math.2FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials Exam Content Outline

  • Understanding Products and Their Risks — 33 questions, 44%. Equities, bonds, options, mutual funds, ETFs, variable annuities, direct participation programs, REITs, and the risk categories that apply to them (credit, interest rate, liquidity, market).
  • Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts, and Prohibited Activities — 23 questions, 31%. Order types, trade settlement, margin, retirement accounts, anti-money laundering rules, insider trading, market manipulation, and financial exploitation of seniors.
  • Knowledge of Capital Markets — 12 questions, 16%. Primary and secondary markets, the SEC and FINRA, broker-dealers and investment advisers, monetary and fiscal policy, and how securities offerings work.
  • Overview of the Regulatory Framework — 7 questions, 9%. Registration, Form U4, background checks, continuing education, outside business activities, political contributions, and gift rules.

Format, Time, and Passing Score

You get 85 multiple-choice questions in one hour and 45 minutes. Only 75 count toward your score; the other 10 are unscored pretest items scattered through the exam, and there is no way to tell them apart from the real ones. The passing score is 70 on a 0–100 scale, and there is no penalty for guessing.1FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials Exam

Who Can Register and How

Unlike most FINRA qualification exams, the SIE has no sponsorship requirement. Any individual 18 or older can enroll, and U.S. citizenship is not required.3FINRA. SIE and Exam Restructuring FAQ After enrolling, you have a 120-day window to schedule and take the test through Prometric, either at a physical test center or online through Prometric’s ProProctor system. The SIE is available for online delivery to any candidate with an open enrollment window and does not require the special accommodation that most other FINRA exams have required since June 2023.5FINRA. Test Day: In-Person and Online

At a Prometric test center, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Show up more than 30 minutes late and you can be turned away and have to pay for a new enrollment. Check-in requires a valid government-issued photo ID whose signature matches your registration exactly, and centers may fingerprint you, scan your palm, or wand you.6Kaplan Financial Education. What to Expect on the Day of Your Securities Exam Phones, watches, bags, and wallets go into a locker. The room provides a non-programmable calculator, erasable note boards, and dry-erase markers. Unscheduled bathroom breaks are allowed but the clock keeps running, and touching study materials or devices during a break is prohibited.4Prometric. FINRA Exam Information

Taking the SIE online is more restrictive in some ways and more forgiving in others. You download the ProProctor app and run a system check ahead of time. Your testing space has to be an indoor, walled, well-lit room with no other people, and the workstation must be clear of notes, personal items, and electronics. Before the exam starts, you complete a 360-degree room scan and a personal inspection: pockets turned out, sleeves up, ears shown.7FINRA. Test Online8Prometric. Remote Exam Experience Instead of physical note boards, you get an on-screen scratch pad and a four-function on-screen calculator; physical calculators and paper are not allowed. Any break requires notifying the proctor, and returning means repeating the full security and room scan, with all that time coming off the exam clock.4Prometric. FINRA Exam Information

In-person testers get a printed pass/fail report right after finishing. Online testers see the result on-screen at the end, and an official score report arrives by email within three business days.4Prometric. FINRA Exam Information

How to Prepare

Most candidates who pass study between 50 and 80 hours across roughly four to eight weeks. One prep-provider data set puts the average passer at about 57 hours over 78 days, with a median of 54 hours over 60 days.9Achievable. SIE Study Time: How Long Is Enough? A background in finance or economics tends to shorten that; complete newcomers often need the upper end of the range or more.10Securities Training Corporation. Active practice matters more than passive reading. A common split is roughly a third of your time reading, a third on topic quizzes, and a third on full-length practice exams. Working through at least 1,000 practice questions is a widely repeated recommendation, and data from one provider suggests candidates who complete more than 3,000 questions post the strongest final scores.9Achievable. SIE Study Time: How Long Is Enough? A useful readiness rule: don’t schedule the real exam until you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher on practice tests, so you have a 10-point cushion above the 70% passing threshold.10Securities Training Corporation. How Hard Is It, and What Happens If You Fail

FINRA stopped publishing official pass rates in 2020, but the most recent numbers give a reasonable baseline. As of early 2019, the overall SIE pass rate was 82%, and the first-time pass rate was 74%.13Kaplan Financial Education. SIE Exam Passing Rate For context, the older 250-question Series 7 historically passed about 65% of takers.14Achievable. SIE Exam Pass Rate The SIE tests broad foundational concepts rather than the deeper role-specific material found in top-off exams, which is part of why its first-time rate runs higher.

If you fail, you can retake the exam after a 30-day waiting period for the first and second failed attempts. After a third consecutive failure, the wait jumps to 180 days, and every attempt after that carries the same 180-day wait.3FINRA. What Passing Does and Doesn’t Get You

Passing the SIE by itself does not make you a registered representative, does not appear on FINRA’s public BrokerCheck database, and does not authorize you to conduct securities business.3FINRA. SIE and Exam Restructuring FAQ Full registration also requires passing a role-specific top-off exam while associated with a FINRA member firm. The most common pairings are the Series 6 for representatives selling mutual funds, variable annuities, and other packaged products; the Series 7 for general securities representatives; and the Series 79 for investment banking representatives.

The SIE and the top-off can be taken in either order. Your SIE result stays valid for four years from the date you pass, and if you register with a firm and later leave, that four-year clock runs from the termination date of your representative-level registration.1FINRA.
