If you’re on a K-1 visa, apply for your Social Security number before the wedding. The K-1 status by itself qualifies you for an SSN, and the application window closes fast: roughly 10 to 14 days after arrival on the front end, and about 14 days before your 90-day authorized stay expires on the back end. Miss it, and you’ll wait months for post-marriage immigration paperwork before the Social Security Administration will issue a number. That’s the short answer on the K-1 visa SSN question, before or after marriage: before, almost always.
Why Before the Wedding Is the Better Move
A K-1 visa authorizes a 90-day stay, and that status alone is enough to get an SSN. Once those 90 days lapse, the K-1 basis is gone. From then on, the SSA won’t issue a number until you have either an Employment Authorization Document or a green card in hand, both of which flow from filings you make after the wedding. Those filings take months.
Applying while the K-1 is active also runs cleanly through verification. The SSA checks your immigration status through the SAVE database, which pulls your electronic I-94 arrival record from Customs and Border Protection. A fresh, valid K-1 admission record verifies quickly. A number in hand before the wedding also unlocks the ordinary financial tasks a new couple faces: adding a spouse to a bank account, insurance policy, or lease, and starting a U.S. credit history.
The Timing Window
Two rules bracket your application. First, wait at least 10 to 14 days after you enter the country. The I-94 record needs time to populate in the system after you clear customs; walking into an SSA office the day after landing almost guarantees a verification failure.
Second, you need at least 14 days of valid status left on your I-94 when you apply. Since the K-1 authorizes exactly 90 days, your practical deadline lands around day 76. File too close to the expiration and the system flags the application because it can’t confirm valid status for long enough to process it. Three to four weeks after arrival is the comfortable zone: the database has updated, and you still have plenty of cushion.
Documents to Bring
The application is Form SS-5, a one-page form you can download from the SSA website or pick up at a field office. Bring the originals of:
- Your foreign passport with the K-1 visa stamp, which establishes both identity and lawful entry.
- Your electronic I-94 record, printed from i94.cbp.dhs.gov, which shows your admission date and the end of your authorized stay.
On Form SS-5, write your name exactly as it appears on your passport and K-1 visa. If your passport reads “Maria Santos Garcia” and you plan to take your spouse’s surname after the wedding, still write “Maria Santos Garcia.” A name that doesn’t match DHS records will stall the application. You can update the record later with a marriage certificate.
In the citizenship section, mark that you are a noncitizen authorized to work with DHS authorization. The Form SS-5 instructions require noncitizens to supply current immigration documents and a foreign passport with biographical information or a photograph.1Social Security Administration. The In-Person Visit
Noncitizens applying for a first-time SSN must appear at a local SSA field office in person. You can start online, but the originals still have to be reviewed at the office.2Social Security Administration. Keep the paper receipt with its reference number; that number is how you follow up if anything goes wrong.

What Your Card Will Say
K-1 holders receive a restricted card printed with “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.”4Social Security Administration. Types of Social Security Cards This is the standard card for noncitizens with temporary work authorization. The number itself functions like any other SSN for taxes, credit, and banking. The restriction language just means an employer must verify work eligibility separately.
K-1 fiancés are classified as authorized to work based on status, but generally need to file Form I-765 with USCIS to get an Employment Authorization Document as physical proof of that eligibility.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 2 – Eligibility Requirements After you receive a green card, you can request a new card without the restriction.
If You Missed the K-1 Window
If the 90 days lapse before you apply, the K-1 basis is no longer available and the path changes entirely. You’ll rely on your post-marriage filings to establish a new basis for the number.
After marrying your U.S. citizen spouse, you’ll typically file Form I-485 for adjustment of status, often together with Form I-765 for work authorization. Both forms include a section to request an SSN at the same time. If you check that box, USCIS shares your data with the SSA and you won’t need a separate trip to a Social Security office.6Social Security Administration. Apply for Your Social Security Card While Applying for Your Work Permit, Lawful Permanent Residency, or U.S. Naturalization
The wait is the problem. You won’t get the SSN until USCIS approves the underlying application. If you requested the SSN through Form I-485, expect the card about 14 days after your green card arrives.6Social Security Administration. Apply for Your Social Security Card While Applying for Your Work Permit, Lawful Permanent Residency, or U.S. Naturalization EAD processing itself can take several months. That delay is the whole reason to apply during the K-1 window.
Updating Your Name After Marriage
If you applied for the SSN before the wedding under your passport name, you can update the record after marrying. Fill out a fresh Form SS-5 signed with your married name, and bring it to a local SSA office with your original or certified marriage certificate and a current identity document such as your passport or state ID.7Social Security Administration. How Do I Change or Correct My Name on My Social Security Number Card
The SSA requires originals or certified copies; photocopies won’t work. A certified marriage certificate is one issued by the county or government office that recorded the marriage, usually bearing a raised seal. Fees for certified copies vary by jurisdiction and commonly run between $14 and $20. Your SSN stays the same; you receive a new card with the married name.
If you applied after the wedding using your married name and supplied a marriage certificate with the original application, no separate name-change visit is needed.
Filing Taxes While Waiting for an SSN
If tax season arrives before your SSN does, a couple of things matter. K-1 holders with work authorization are generally SSN-eligible, and the IRS is explicit that anyone eligible for an SSN should not apply for an ITIN.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form W-7 So the ITIN workaround isn’t a substitute here.

If the SSN hasn’t arrived by the April deadline, file Form 4868 for a six-month automatic extension. That pushes the filing deadline to October, which is usually enough time for the number to come through.11Internal Revenue Service.
