A “ship to sail” charge on a credit or debit card statement is almost always the settlement of a Carnival Cruise Line onboard account, called Sail & Sign. Carnival runs a cashless system on board: drinks, dining, spa, shore excursions, Wi-Fi, casino play, retail, and automatic gratuities are all billed to one account and charged to your linked card at the end of the voyage.1Carnival Cruise Line. Sail & Sign Onboard Account If you recently cruised, the charge is your final onboard bill. If you didn’t, or the number is far larger than you expected, the sections below cover how to read it, why it may look inflated, and how to push back.
What the Charge Actually Covers
Every guest on a Carnival ship gets a Sail & Sign card that works as both room key and payment method. Cash isn’t accepted for onboard purchases; everything routes through the account and settles to the credit card, debit card, cash deposit, or Carnival gift card the guest linked at check-in.2Carnival Cruise Line. Forms of Payment
Almost anything spent on the ship goes on that account:
- Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, plus beverage packages like Cheers! and Bottomless Bubbles
- Specialty dining beyond the included restaurants
- Spa and salon services at Cloud 9 Spa, operated by OneSpaWorld
- Shore excursions
- Internet and Wi-Fi plans
- Retail purchases at onboard shops, operated by Starboard Cruise Services
- Casino play, with daily loading limits between $5,000 and $10,0003Carnival Cruise Line. Casino and Carnival Players Club

Gratuities Are Often the Surprise
Automatic gratuities are the single most common reason a Sail & Sign bill lands higher than guests expect. As of April 2, 2026, Carnival charges $17 per person per day in standard staterooms and $19 per person per day in suites.5Cruise Radio. Carnival Raising Daily Gratuities, Bottomless Bubbles Package Two people on a seven-day cruise in a standard cabin owe $238 in daily gratuities alone. You can ask Guest Services to adjust or remove the daily gratuity while still on board. Once the ship docks and you disembark, those charges are final.5Cruise Radio. Carnival Raising Daily Gratuities, Bottomless Bubbles Package
Why the Total Can Look Bigger Than It Is
Before you spend anything, Carnival places a pre-authorization hold on your card to verify it: $100 per stateroom for cruises of two to six days, $200 for cruises of seven days or longer. As you spend during the voyage, Carnival adds more holds, so multiple pending amounts can appear on your statement at once.7Carnival Cruise Line (Australia). What Are the Additional Charges and Holds I Can See on My Credit Card/Bank
On the last day, Carnival settles the account with a single lump-sum charge for actual spending. The earlier holds then drop off, but only on your bank’s schedule. Some banks release them in a day or two; others take up to 30 days.7Carnival Cruise Line (Australia). What Are the Additional Charges and Holds I Can See on My Credit Card/Bank During that window your statement can show the final settlement alongside pending holds that look like duplicates. Carnival says it can’t speed up the release and tells guests to contact their bank.1Carnival Cruise Line. Sail & Sign Onboard Account
Debit Cards Get Hit Harder
If you linked a debit card, every hold reduces the cash available in your checking account. Because holds stack, the withheld total during and just after the cruise can run well above what you actually owe. Carnival states it is not responsible for overdraft fees or insufficient-funds charges that result.7Carnival Cruise Line (Australia). How to Get an Itemized Statement
Before disputing anything, get the itemized bill. Carnival has an online request form for a Sail & Sign statement that asks for your name, booking number, ship, sailing date, voyage length, and the last four digits of the card used. The statement is emailed back.8Carnival Cruise Line. Request a Sail & Sign Statement During the cruise itself, you can check your running balance on the HUB app, at onboard kiosks, or at Guest Services.1Carnival Cruise Line. Sail & Sign Onboard Account

For general billing questions after a cruise, Carnival directs guests to its Post-Cruise Inquiries page or to email guestcare@carnival.com with the guest’s name, ship, sailing date, booking number, and stateroom number.9Carnival Cruise Line. Post-Cruise Inquiries
Spa and Retail Charges Go Through Contractors
Not every line item on the bill is Carnival’s to refund. Spa services are run by OneSpaWorld, and onboard shops by Starboard Cruise Services. Carnival typically refers billing disputes on either to the contractor rather than handling refunds itself.10BBB. Carnival Corporation – BBB Complaints

Your Card Issuer Is the Backstop
If the charge is genuinely unauthorized, incorrect, or for something you didn’t receive, federal law gives credit card users a formal dispute path. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you notify your card issuer in writing of a billing error within 60 days of the statement showing it. The issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days. You can withhold payment on the disputed amount during the investigation, and the issuer can’t report it as delinquent.13FTC. a href=”https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/using-credit-cards-and-disputing-charges” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges
Quality-of-service disputes have extra conditions: the purchase must exceed $50, you must have tried to resolve it with the merchant first, and the purchase must have been made in your home state or within 100 miles of your billing address.14CFPB. Debit cards get less protection. Regulation E covers unauthorized electronic transfers but generally doesn’t extend to disputes over the quality or receipt of goods and services.15Consumer Compliance Outlook. Credit and Debit Card Issuers’ Obligations When Consumers Dispute Transactions
If You Didn’t Take a Cruise
A Sail & Sign charge on your statement without a matching voyage points to either card fraud or someone else authorizing charges to your card at check-in. Because the settlement runs through Carnival, you have two tracks running in parallel: request a Sail & Sign statement using the online form to see what was billed and to which sailing,8Carnival Cruise Line. Recurring Problems Guests Report
Complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau against Carnival Corporation cluster around a few Sail & Sign patterns worth checking your own statement against:
- Spa or casino charges guests say they never authorized, including duplicate billing when a service was already prepaid.10BBB. Carnival Corporation – BBB Complaints
- Point-of-sale errors in onboard shops billing the same transaction multiple times.10BBB. Carnival Corporation – BBB Complaints
- Automatic daily gratuities that guests didn’t realize would post, sometimes several hundred dollars. Carnival has issued refunds in some cases but described them as a one-time courtesy.17BBB. Carnival Corporation – BBB Complaints
- Being bounced between Carnival and third-party contractors on spa or retail disputes, with slow responses from the contractors.10BBB. Carnival Corporation – BBB Complaints
If any of these match what’s on your card, pull the itemized statement first, contact Carnival or the named contractor for the specific line, and file a written dispute with your card issuer inside the 60-day window if the merchant response falls short.
