  • Ultegra FC-6800 and FC-R8000

What You Get Automatically

Two benefits apply without any claim form.

Extended Warranty Through July 29, 2027

Shimano has extended its express warranty for bonding separation and delamination on every covered crankset through July 29, 2027. If an authorized retailer inspects your crankset and finds signs of bonding separation or delamination, Shimano will replace the part for free and cover installation.4Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. Enhanced Inspections at Retailers

The settlement requires Shimano to upgrade how authorized retailers inspect the recalled cranksets. Every recall retailer must be supplied with a magnifying device with enhanced lighting, similar to a Carson CP-45, and an expert-reviewed inspection manual. A retail assistance agent is available during business hours to answer questions about the process.2Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. Reimbursement If You Already Paid to Replace a Crankset

If you previously paid out of pocket to replace a covered crankset that separated, delaminated, or showed evidence of those conditions, you can file for reimbursement of documented costs, including the replacement part and installation labor. There is no stated per-person cap; the settlement covers “reasonable out-of-pocket costs” backed by receipts, invoices, or repair records.5ShimanoCranksetSettlement.com. Two situations disqualify a claim:

  • The replacement was done on or after September 21, 2023, the date the voluntary recall was announced. After that date, a free replacement was available through the recall itself.
  • The original express warranty had not yet expired when you replaced the crankset. The standard warranty runs two years from purchase for Ultegra and three years for Dura-Ace.1ShimanoCranksetSettlement.com. In Re Shimano Crankset Litigation Settlement

What the Defect Is

The covered cranksets use a bonded construction in which an outer cover is adhered to the crank arm body. In some units that bond can separate or delaminate, and the arm can break during a ride. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Shimano announced a voluntary recall on September 21, 2023, covering roughly 760,000 cranksets sold in the United States between January 2012 and August 2023.3CPSC. Shimano Recalls Cranksets for Bicycles Due to Crash Hazard At the time of the recall, Shimano had received 4,519 reports of bonding separation and six reported injuries, including bone fractures, joint displacement, and lacerations.4Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. The underlying class action, In re Shimano Crankset Litigation, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California after the recall. The complaint alleged Shimano knew about the potential for bonding separation for roughly a decade before the recall and made more than 25 manufacturing and design changes without disclosing the risk. Shimano denies wrongdoing and maintains the recall was voluntary.7Escape Collective. Shimano Crankset Class Action Settlement Gets Final Court Approval

If you have a covered crankset and haven’t yet had it inspected, the CPSC’s stop-ride advisory from the original recall applies until an authorized retailer clears the part. Take the bike in for the free inspection, and if you paid to replace a failed crankset before the recall date, file your reimbursement claim before August 4, 2026.
