SENTRI Program: Eligibility, Enrollment Interview, and Renewal

The SENTRI program is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection trusted traveler program that lets pre-approved, low-risk travelers use dedicated fast lanes at southern land border ports of entry, turning what can be hours of waiting into minutes.1U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI Membership costs $120 for five years and also gives you TSA PreCheck and Global Entry benefits at no extra charge.2U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Non-Refundable Application Fee Getting in takes three steps: an online application, a background check, and an in-person interview at an enrollment center near the border.

Who Can Apply

There are no citizenship or age restrictions.3U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI Eligibility U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, Mexican nationals, and citizens of other countries can all apply, as long as they hold valid documentation that permits entry into the United States. Minors under 18 need a parent or legal guardian’s consent, and that parent or guardian must attend the enrollment interview with them.4U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Children

The core requirement is convincing CBP that you are a low-risk traveler. That comes down to a background check covering criminal history, immigration records, customs compliance, employment, and residency.

What Can Get You Denied

The application fee is non-refundable, so read the disqualifiers before you pay. CBP may deny you if you:

  • Have any criminal conviction or pending charge, including a DUI.
  • Have violated customs, immigration, or agriculture laws in any country.
  • Are the subject of an ongoing law enforcement investigation at any level.
  • Have been denied a firearm purchase.
  • Have received a criminal pardon from any country.
  • Are inadmissible to the United States, even with an approved waiver of inadmissibility or parole documentation.
  • Provide false or incomplete information on the application.
  • Cannot otherwise satisfy CBP of your low-risk status.3U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI Eligibility

One trap catches a lot of applicants: expunged or dismissed records still count. If you request reconsideration after a denial, CBP wants court disposition documents for every arrest or conviction, including expunged ones.5U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Trusted Traveler Program Denials Federal databases often keep these records even after a state-level expungement, so disclosing everything up front is safer than hoping it won’t surface.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather your documents before opening the application. The form asks for five years of history in several categories, and guessing at dates or addresses creates inconsistencies that slow approval or trigger denial.

For identity and status, you need a valid passport (required for everyone), a second form of ID such as a driver’s license, your permanent resident card if you are an LPR, and any valid entry documents like a travel visa if you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.6U.S. Customs and Border Protection. How to Apply for SENTRI If you plan to drive through SENTRI lanes, you also need your vehicle registration and proof of U.S. auto insurance from a company authorized to write policies in the United States.

The application itself asks for five years of residential addresses, five years of employment history, and five years of international travel history, excluding trips to Canada and Mexico.7Trusted Traveler Programs. Applying and Paying the Fee

You apply through the Trusted Traveler Programs portal at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov. After creating an account and filling out the form, you pay the $120 non-refundable fee, which covers the full five-year membership, the background check, biometric collection, and vehicle registration if applicable.2U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Non-Refundable Application Fee Before October 2024, vehicle registration cost a separate $42, but a rule that took effect October 1, 2024, folded it into the single $120 fee.9Federal Register. CBP generally completes its review within two to three weeks, though high-volume periods can stretch that out.10U.S. Customs and Border Protection. How to Renew Your SENTRI Membership If nothing further is needed, your status changes to “conditionally approved,” which means the background check cleared and you can schedule your interview. Check your TTP account regularly, or make sure an email address is listed in your profile so you get notifications.11U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Once conditionally approved, you have 730 days to complete your interview. Miss that window and CBP cancels your application, with no refund of the fee.12U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Conditional Approval Interview Deadline Two years sounds generous, but slots at popular enrollment centers fill up fast, so book early.

The Enrollment Interview

SENTRI enrollment centers sit along the southern border in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas, with roughly 15 locations across cities like San Diego (Otay Mesa), El Paso, Laredo, Nogales, and Brownsville.13Trusted Traveler Programs. Schedule Appointment – SENTRI A few Global Entry enrollment centers at airports, including Phoenix Sky Harbor and Albuquerque, also handle SENTRI interviews. Each applicant needs a separate appointment, even when family members are applying together.

Bring your passport, a second form of ID, and any documents you referenced in the application. Lawful permanent residents need their green card. If you registered a vehicle, bring the registration and proof of U.S. insurance.6U.S. Customs and Border Protection. How to Apply for SENTRI The officer will review your information, ask about your travel patterns and background, and take your fingerprints and photograph.

You no longer need to bring your vehicle to the enrollment center. The October 2024 rule eliminated that requirement. Your registered vehicle may instead be inspected at secondary inspection during a future crossing, at CBP’s discretion.14Federal Register. If the officer is satisfied, you receive final approval. Your card ships to the mailing address on file and can arrive in as little as 8 to 10 business days, though sometimes it takes six to eight weeks. Activate the card through your TTP account before using it at the border.11U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Trusted Traveler Programs – Frequently Asked Questions

Using SENTRI at the Border

The card carries a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip. As you approach a dedicated SENTRI lane at a southern port of entry, a roadside reader picks up the signal and sends a unique identifier to CBP’s systems. By the time you reach the booth, the officer already has your information on screen and has run automated database checks.15Department of Homeland Security. Use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology for Border Crossings The result is a crossing that takes a fraction of the time a general lane requires, especially during peak commuting hours.

Pedestrians can use SENTRI too. Dedicated pedestrian lanes at eligible ports accept the card for expedited processing using the same RFID verification.1U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI SENTRI lanes exist only at southern land border ports; the card does not create fast-lane access at northern land crossings.

PreCheck and Global Entry Included

SENTRI membership bundles in two other benefits that make it a strong deal for anyone who also flies.

You qualify for TSA PreCheck at U.S. airports. Enter your PASS ID (the membership number on the back of your card or in your TTP account) in the “Known Traveler Number” field when booking flights, and you get routed to the PreCheck screening line where shoes, belts, and laptops stay put.16U.S. Customs and Border Protection. TSA PreCheck

You can also use Global Entry kiosks when arriving in the United States by air, which lets you skip the regular passport control line at international airports.17Trusted Traveler Programs. SENTRI Program Information To use the kiosks you must be at least 14 and present a machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card. The SENTRI card itself does not work at the kiosk. Mexican nationals who are SENTRI members must also complete a separate risk assessment by the Mexican government before getting kiosk access.18Federal Register. Utilization of Global Entry Kiosks by NEXUS and SENTRI Participants

Renewing Your Membership

SENTRI memberships run five years. You can renew through your TTP account up to one year before expiration, and renewing early does not cost you membership time: the new five-year period starts the day after your old one expires and runs through your next birthday after those five years. The fee is the same $120, and CBP generally reviews renewals within two to three weeks.10U.S. Customs and Border Protection. How to Renew Your SENTRI Membership

Renewals do not always require a new interview, but CBP may ask for one if something in your background has changed. The expiration date is printed on the card to the right of your photo.

If You’re Denied or Revoked

CBP can revoke membership at any time for a program violation, a customs or immigration law violation, a criminal offense, or any determination that you pose a risk. Revocation can bring additional consequences, including referral for criminal prosecution or seizure of goods and vehicles.19eCFR. 8 CFR 235.7 – Automated Inspection Services (PORTPASS)

If your application is denied or your membership revoked, CBP posts a notification to your TTP account explaining why. You can request reconsideration through the Trusted Traveler Programs Ombudsman by clicking “Request Reconsideration” in the Program Memberships section of your dashboard. Include the date and reason for the denial, a written summary of the circumstances, and court disposition documents for every arrest or conviction, expunged records included.20U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Trusted Traveler Application Denial There is no formal administrative appeal beyond the Ombudsman’s reconsideration, but a denial does not stop you from reapplying later.
