SENTRI Card: Benefits, Eligibility, Application, and Renewal

A SENTRI card is a five-year trusted traveler credential issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection that lets pre-approved, low-risk travelers cross the U.S.–Mexico land border through dedicated lanes, use Global Entry kiosks when flying back into the country, and clear airport security through TSA PreCheck. Applications cost $120, run through the Trusted Traveler Programs website, and require both a background check and an in-person interview at an enrollment center on the southern border.

What the Card Gets You

SENTRI is built around land crossings between the United States and Mexico, but the benefits reach further than a single fast lane.

  • Dedicated SENTRI-only vehicle lanes at southern border ports of entry, where the card’s RFID chip is read as you approach the booth.
  • Expedited pedestrian lanes at land crossings.
  • Global Entry kiosks at U.S. airports when arriving on international flights, as long as you carry a machine-readable passport or permanent resident card.1Federal Register. Utilization of Global Entry Kiosks by NEXUS and SENTRI Participants
  • TSA PreCheck at airport security, meaning shorter lines and no need to remove shoes, belts, or laptops.2U.S. Customs and Border Protection. TSA PreCheck

SENTRI members can also use NEXUS lanes when driving into the United States from Canada.3U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI: Frequent Driving Between Mexico and the US That makes it the broadest of the three trusted traveler programs for land crossings. Global Entry alone doesn’t come with dedicated vehicle lanes; NEXUS is for the Canadian border. If you regularly drive across the southern border, SENTRI is the program to apply for.

Who Can Apply

There are no citizenship or age requirements. U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and Mexican nationals can all apply.4U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Eligibility The question CBP is trying to answer is whether you are a low-risk traveler. Several factors will get an application denied:

  • Any criminal conviction, pending charge, or outstanding warrant, including DUI.
  • Prior violations of customs, immigration, or agricultural regulations in any country.
  • Being the subject of an ongoing law enforcement investigation at any level.
  • Having been denied the purchase of a firearm.
  • Being inadmissible to the United States under immigration law, even with an approved waiver or parole documentation.
  • Providing incomplete or misleading information on the application, which is a federal crime punishable by up to five years in prison.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 1001 – Statements or Entries Generally

A criminal pardon from any country is also disqualifying, which catches some applicants off guard. CBP also keeps a catch-all: if you cannot otherwise satisfy the agency of your low-risk status, they can deny you.4U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Eligibility

Children

Children under 18 can apply with a parent or legal guardian’s consent. As of October 2024, the application fee is waived for minors when a parent or legal guardian is already enrolled in SENTRI, NEXUS, or Global Entry, or has an application pending or conditionally approved.6U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Cost and Timing

The application fee is $120 and is non-refundable, whether you are applying for the first time or renewing.7U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI Application Fee8Federal Register. Harmonization of the Fees and Application Procedures for the Global Entry and SENTRI Programs and Other Changes Registering your first vehicle for the commuter lane is included. Each additional vehicle costs $42, up to four vehicles per person, and up to eight people can be registered to a single vehicle.

Timing varies. In straightforward cases, CBP finishes its vetting within about two weeks. How to Apply

Gather your documents before you start. Adding missing paperwork later slows things down, and inconsistencies between what you enter online and what you bring to your interview can raise flags.

You need proof of citizenship, either a valid passport or a birth certificate. Lawful permanent residents should have their permanent resident card ready. Residential stability is verified through utility bills, mortgage statements, or a current lease, and you also need to show employment or financial self-sufficiency through pay stubs or recent tax returns. Accurate residential and employment history going back several years helps the background investigation run smoothly.

If you plan to register a vehicle for the dedicated commuter lane, you need its year, make, model, and license plate number. If the vehicle belongs to someone else, bring a notarized letter of permission addressed to the “Officer in Charge of U.S. Customs and Border Protection” authorizing you to drive it across the border.12U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Create a Login.gov account to access the Trusted Traveler Programs website, complete the online application, upload your documents, and pay the $120 fee. Your application then enters a review phase while CBP runs its background checks. When your status changes to “conditionally approved,” you receive an email and can schedule an interview at a SENTRI enrollment center. Enrollment centers are located in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas along the southern border.13U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI Enrollment Centers

At the appointment, a CBP officer reviews the original documents you uploaded, takes your fingerprints and photograph, and inspects any vehicle you registered to confirm it matches your application. Once approved, your card is mailed to the address on file, and you must activate it through your TTP account before using it at a border crossing.

Using the Card at the Border

The RFID chip in the card is read automatically as you approach the dedicated lane. You display the card to the reader mounted near the lane, and the system pulls up your profile before you reach the inspection booth.14U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Ready Lanes Every person in the vehicle age 16 or older needs their own valid SENTRI card or a compatible RFID-enabled credential such as a Global Entry card.15U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Global Entry Frequently Asked Questions You cannot bring anyone through the lane who lacks an active membership.

The vehicle also has to be registered in your TTP profile. Driving an unregistered vehicle through a SENTRI lane is a program violation. Carry the physical card each time; photos or screenshots are not accepted at the booth.

Approval doesn’t guarantee a wave-through. CBP can still send SENTRI members to secondary inspection, whether because of the circumstances of your travel or through random selection.16U.S. Customs and Border Protection. What Will End Your Membership

SENTRI members follow the same customs declaration rules as everyone else. You must declare all goods acquired abroad, including food, merchandise, and souvenirs. Agricultural items are the most common trap: all meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, and soil must be declared, and many are prohibited outright.19U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Bringing Agricultural Products Into the United States Fresh and dried meats are commonly prohibited. Coming from Mexico, stone fruits, apples, mangoes, and several other produce items require permits. Soil is banned without an advance USDA permit, and vehicles must be free of soil before crossing.

Undeclared items are treated as smuggled goods, subject to seizure and a personal penalty against the traveler.20eCFR. 19 CFR 148.18 – Failure to Declare First-time penalties for non-commercial agricultural violations can reach $1,000. Fraud or gross negligence penalties on higher-value commercial goods scale with the domestic value of the merchandise and go much higher.21Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 19 USC 1592 – Penalties for Fraud, Gross Negligence, and Negligence

On duty-free allowances, returning travelers can bring back up to $800 worth of goods duty-free after being out of the country for at least 48 hours, provided the exemption has not been used in the prior 30 days. The limit drops to $200 for shorter trips or repeat use inside 30 days.22U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Types of Exemptions

CBP can revoke SENTRI membership at any time for any violation of U.S. law or program rules.23U.S. Customs and Border Protection. CBP Revokes Trusted Traveler Status for Violations The most common triggers are failing to declare items, running commercial quantities of merchandise through SENTRI lanes, and importing prohibited agricultural products. Beyond loss of membership, consequences can include seizure, monetary penalties, and arrest.

Renewal

SENTRI membership lasts five years. You can begin renewing up to one year before expiration without losing any time; the new five-year period starts the day after your current membership expires and runs to your next birthday.11U.S. Customs and Border Protection. How To Renew Your SENTRI Membership

Renewal is not just a fee payment. You log into the TTP website, update your application, pay $120, and go through a new risk assessment that includes a fingerprint check and an interview with a CBP officer at an enrollment center. CBP typically reviews renewal applications within two to three weeks before inviting you to schedule the appointment. If you let your membership lapse without renewing, you lose access to SENTRI lanes and all associated benefits until you complete the full process again.

If You’re Denied

If CBP denies your application or revokes your membership, you receive a letter with the reason. Denials are not always permanent, and you can request reconsideration through the TTP website by submitting your case to the CBP Ombudsman.24U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Trusted Traveler Program Denials

Your request has to be in English and should include the date of denial, the stated reasons, a summary explaining or clarifying the situation, and court disposition documents for any arrests or convictions, including expunged ones. Supporting documents can be uploaded as PDFs or images. Reversal isn’t guaranteed, but applicants denied because of incomplete or inaccurate records sometimes succeed once they provide paperwork that clears the issue up.
