You can claim a self-education expenses tax deduction in Australia when your study either maintains or improves the skills you use in your current job, or is likely to increase your income from that job. That two-limb test comes from Taxation Ruling TR 2024/3, which replaced TR 98/9 and now governs how the Australian Taxation Office treats these claims.1Australian Taxation Office. Income Tax: Deductibility of Self-Education Expenses Incurred by an Individual If your course clears that bar, tuition, textbooks, equipment, and some travel become deductible. The old rule requiring you to subtract $250 from your claim no longer applies to expenses incurred from 1 July 2022 onward.2Australian Taxation Office. Self-Education Reduction in Expenses
Does Your Study Qualify
The course content needs a direct link to duties you actually perform in your current income-earning activities.1Australian Taxation Office. Income Tax: Deductibility of Self-Education Expenses Incurred by an Individual A junior accountant taking a specialised tax law course that leads to a senior role in the same firm satisfies the test: the new knowledge feeds straight into work responsibilities they already hold. The connection has to exist at the time you spend the money, not at some aspirational future point.
Study designed to get you into a different occupation is not deductible, even if the new career pays more. A nurse completing a medical degree to become a doctor, or a café worker studying hospitality management to change careers, will not qualify.3Australian Taxation Office. Self-Education Expenses The ATO looks at whether the education enables a new income-earning activity or simply enhances what you already do.
One boundary to be aware of: if your only income is a rebatable benefit such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, or ABSTUDY, you cannot claim self-education expenses against that income, because those payments are not ordinary assessable income from employment.1Australian Taxation Office. What You Can Claim
Once your course passes the test, the deductible categories are broad:
- Tuition and course fees for full-fee-paying places, including conference and seminar fees.
- Textbooks, professional journals, stationery, and computer consumables required for the course.
- The education-related portion of your internet and data costs.
- Equipment such as laptops and desks used for study, subject to the depreciation rules below.
- Transport between home, work, and your place of education, subject to specific leg-by-leg rules.
These come from the ATO’s own guidance on allowable self-education expenses.4Australian Taxation Office. Tax Time Self-Education Expenses Every dollar must be backed by a receipt or other written evidence, and you have to reduce your claim for any private-use portion.
Equipment and Depreciation
Equipment costing $300 or less and used primarily for self-education can be claimed in full in the year you buy it.5Australian Taxation Office. Depreciating Assets You Use for Work Anything above $300 has to be depreciated over its effective life using either the prime cost or diminishing value method.6Australian Taxation Office. Computers, Laptops and Software
A laptop has an ATO-determined effective life of two years. A $1,500 laptop used entirely for qualifying study would produce a deduction of roughly $750 per year under the prime cost method. If you also use it for streaming, social media, and personal tasks, you must reduce the claim to reflect only the education-related share, and keep a record of the percentage split.3Australian Taxation Office. Travel Between Home, Work, and Study
Travel deductions get specific about which leg of a trip you can claim. A direct round trip from home to your place of education and back, or from work to education and back to work, is fully claimable.
Chain the trips and only the first leg qualifies. Home to education then on to work: the home-to-education leg is deductible, the education-to-work leg is not. Work to education then home: work-to-education is claimable, education-to-home is private.3Australian Taxation Office. Self-Education Expenses The reasoning is that the second leg is really your ordinary commute, and stopping at a lecture hall along the way does not convert it into a deductible trip.
What You Cannot Claim
Some spending is off-limits no matter how relevant your course is to your current job. The biggest exclusion is government loan repayments. You cannot deduct compulsory or voluntary repayments under HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, the Student Financial Supplement Scheme, Student Start-up Loans, Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans, or VET Student Loans.7Australian Taxation Office. D4 Work-Related Self-Education Expenses 2025 Voluntary repayments are equally non-deductible.8Australian Taxation Office. Voluntary Repayments
Anything your employer reimburses is also ineligible, because you have not borne the cost. Courses pursued for personal development, hobbies, or general life skills fail the nexus test, even when they run through a recognised institution.
Records You Must Keep
You need written evidence for every expense you claim, held for five years from the date you lodge the return.9Australian Taxation Office. Records You Need to Keep For depreciating assets like a laptop, the five-year clock starts from your last decline-in-value claim, which can extend retention well beyond the year of purchase.
- Receipts for tuition, textbooks, stationery, and equipment, showing the amount and date.
- Travel logs with dates, destinations, and purpose for each trip.
- Course outlines or brochures that show how the content relates to your current job.
- Depreciation records: cost, purchase date, effective life, calculation method, and the percentage of education use for each asset.3Australian Taxation Office. Self-Education Expenses
If you cannot produce records when asked, the ATO can impose a penalty of 20 penalty units.10Australian Taxation Office. Failure to Meet Other Tax Obligations The deduction itself is likely to be reversed, so you would owe the tax you originally saved plus interest.
How to Lodge
Self-education expenses go at item D4, “work-related self-education expenses,” on your individual tax return.7Australian Taxation Office. D4 Work-Related Self-Education Expenses 2025 Most people lodge through myTax or a registered tax agent, entering each category separately: course fees, books and journals, equipment depreciation, and transport.
Once lodged, the ATO aims to issue your notice of assessment within two weeks, whether you file through myTax or a tax agent.11Australian Taxation Office. Your Notice of Assessment Processing can take longer if your return is selected for review or the ATO needs more information. The notice shows whether you have a refund or a balance owing and is the official record that your return has been assessed.
