Self Assessment Tax Rebate: How to Claim, Deadlines, and Payments on Account

To claim a Self Assessment tax rebate, file your return through HMRC’s online portal: the return works out what you actually owed for the year against what was already collected, and any surplus is paid back to you, usually within five days to eight weeks of submission.1GOV.UK. Self Assessment Tax Returns Overpayments are more common than people realise, particularly when income changes mid-year or when higher-rate relief hasn’t been applied automatically.

Why You Might Be Owed a Refund

You Left a Job Partway Through the Year

Pay As You Earn deducts tax based on a projection of what you’ll earn across the full tax year, not a precise measurement of your liability.2Low Incomes Tax Reform Group. How the Pay As You Earn System Works – An Employers Guide Leave that job in July and your actual annual earnings may land well below the projected figure, meaning you were overtaxed for the months you worked. The Self Assessment return catches that gap.

Your Payments on Account Were Based on a Better Year

If your Self Assessment bill exceeded £1,000 in the previous year, HMRC requires two advance payments toward the next year’s bill, each equal to half of last year’s tax, due 31 January and 31 July.3GOV.UK. Understand Your Self Assessment Tax Bill – Payments on Account If your income has since dropped, those payments were sized for a year that no longer reflects reality. When you file and your actual liability is lower, the excess comes back.

Your Income Fell Below the Personal Allowance

The standard personal allowance is £12,570, so income up to that level is tax-free.4GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances If your taxable profit or combined income lands at or below that threshold after allowable expenses, any tax already collected during the year should be refunded in full.

You’re a Higher-Rate Taxpayer With Unclaimed Relief

Some of the largest rebates come from relief that higher-rate taxpayers are entitled to but which isn’t applied automatically. If you pay into a pension scheme that uses relief at source, the provider claims back the basic 20% for you. If you pay tax at 40% or 45%, the additional relief only reaches you through your Self Assessment return.5GOV.UK. Tax on Your Private Pension Contributions – Tax Relief Scottish rate bands work slightly differently, but the principle is the same.

Gift Aid works the same way. The charity claims basic-rate tax on your donation; as a higher-rate taxpayer, you claim the difference through your return. You can include donations made up to the date you submit, not just those falling inside the tax year the return covers.6GOV.UK. Tax Relief When You Donate to a Charity – Gift Aid

Marriage Allowance lets a lower-earning partner transfer up to 10% of their personal allowance to a basic-rate partner. Claim it in the Marriage Allowance section of the return. The partner making the transfer should file at least three days before the partner receiving it.7GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance – How to Apply

What You Need Before You Start

The core identifier is your Unique Taxpayer Reference, assigned by HMRC when you registered for Self Assessment. It’s usually 10 digits, occasionally 13.8GOV.UK. Find Your UTR Number

If you were employed at any point during the year, you’ll want your P60 from that employer showing total pay and tax deducted. If you left mid-year, your P45 covers earnings and tax up to the leaving date. Taxable benefits like health insurance or a company car appear on a P11D and need entering in the benefits section.

Self-employed income needs records of all business revenue and allowable expenses: office costs, travel, uniforms, staff, stock, insurance, premises, marketing, and training related to your business.9GOV.UK. Expenses if Youre Self-Employed Every expense must have been incurred entirely for business purposes. If your turnover is under £90,000, you can enter a single total for expenses on the return, though keep itemised records in case HMRC opens an enquiry.10Low Incomes Tax Reform Group. How to File and How the Refund Reaches You

File online through HMRC’s portal, signing in with a Government Gateway user ID or a GOV.UK One Login.11GOV.UK. HMRC Online Services – Sign In or Set Up an Account The return steps through each income source, expenses, and any relief you’re claiming, then calculates the final position and shows whether you owe money or are due a refund. HMRC also accepts submissions from approved commercial software, which many people prefer for multiple income streams or supplementary pages.12GOV.UK. Self Assessment Commercial Software Suppliers

Once processed, the refund generally arrives within five days to eight weeks. The range depends on volume, the time of year, and whether HMRC runs security checks.13Low Incomes Tax Reform Group. Tax Refunds Returns filed during the January peak take longer. You can track progress through your online tax account, where the status shows as pending while approval is in progress.

One rule catches people out: HMRC won’t release the refund if you have tax falling due within the next 45 days. The overpayment is applied against that upcoming bill instead. File in early January with a payment on account due on 31 January, and the refund is used to offset that liability rather than paid into your account.14GOV.UK. Most refunds are paid by bank transfer, so check that your sort code and account number are correct in your HMRC account before filing. Without valid bank details on file, HMRC sends a cheque by post, which takes longer.

If HMRC holds your money longer than it should, repayment interest is paid. As of January 2026, the rate is 2.75%, calculated as the Bank of England base rate minus 1% with a floor of 0.5%.15GOV.UK. HMRC Interest Rates for Late and Early Payments

Deadlines, and Why They Matter Even When You’re Owed Money

For the 2025/26 tax year (6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026), the paper return deadline is 31 October 2026 and the online deadline is 31 January 2027. File online by 30 December 2026 and owe less than £3,000, and HMRC can collect the tax through your PAYE code the following year rather than as a lump sum.16GOV.UK. Self Assessment Tax Returns – Deadlines

Miss the online deadline and HMRC issues an automatic £100 penalty, then £10 per day after three months up to £900, then a further 5% of tax due or £300 at six and twelve months.17GOV.UK. Self Assessment Tax Returns – Penalties The awkward part for anyone owed a rebate: the £100 penalty applies for missing the deadline regardless of which way the money is flowing. File on time even when you know HMRC owes you.

Cutting Payments on Account Before They Fall Due

If you already know your income will be lower this year than last, you don’t have to wait for the return to reclaim the excess. You can apply to reduce your payments on account before they fall due, which is worth doing when business profits have dropped, new relief has become available, or more tax is being collected through PAYE than before.

Apply online, or print and post form SA303. The deadline is 31 January after the end of the tax year.18GOV.UK. Claim to Reduce Payments on Account Estimate conservatively: reduce too far and HMRC charges interest on any shortfall when the return is filed.

Fixing Earlier Years

Spotted an error after filing? You can amend the return online within 12 months of the Self Assessment deadline. For the 2023/24 tax year, that means until 31 January 2026. After the window closes, you have to write to HMRC.19GOV.UK. Self Assessment Tax Returns – If You Need to Change Your Return

For a year that’s already finalised, overpayment relief lets you claim up to four years after the end of the tax year in question.20GOV.UK. SACM12155 – Overpayment Relief – Time Limits for Making a Claim After that, the claim is out of time. This matters if you only realise years later that higher-rate pension relief was never claimed, or deductible expenses were missed. Four years of unclaimed relief can add up.

When You Don’t Need Self Assessment at All

Not everyone owed a refund has to file a return. If you’re a straightforward PAYE employee who overpaid through your tax code, HMRC picks this up automatically and sends a P800 tax calculation letter. If the letter says you’re owed money, claim online through your personal tax account and the refund arrives within five working days, or request a cheque and wait around six weeks. Don’t claim within 45 days and HMRC posts a cheque automatically within 14 days.21GOV.UK. If Your Tax Calculation Letter (P800) Says Youre Due a Refund

The P800 route only works when your tax affairs run entirely through PAYE. If you have self-employment income, rental income, or capital gains, Self Assessment is still the mechanism for claiming what you’re owed.
