Section 80C deductions let individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families cut their taxable income by up to ₹1,50,000 in a financial year through a defined list of investments and payments, but only if they choose the Old Tax Regime.1Income Tax Department. Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) for AY 2026-2027 That ceiling is not exclusive to Section 80C: it is shared with Section 80CCC (pension fund contributions) and Section 80CCD(1) (National Pension System employee contributions), so all three draw from the same ₹1.5 lakh pool.
The Regime Choice Decides Everything
From Assessment Year 2024-25 onward, the New Tax Regime under Section 115BAC is the default. File without actively opting out and you lose access to Section 80C entirely.2Income Tax Department. FAQs on New Tax vs Old Tax Regime The new regime offers lower slab rates but strips away most Chapter VI-A deductions, 80C included.
To claim the deduction, you must opt out of the new regime in your ITR form. ITR-1 and ITR-2 filers select “Yes” in the opting-out field under Schedule Personal Information; ITR-3, ITR-4, and ITR-5 filers select “Yes, within due date.”2Income Tax Department. FAQs on New Tax vs Old Tax Regime Skip that step and your 80C investments still grow, but they do nothing for your tax bill that year.
Who Qualifies and How the ₹1.5 Lakh Cap Works
Two categories of taxpayers can claim: individual taxpayers (residents and non-residents with Indian income) and Hindu Undivided Families. NRIs can claim 80C under the Old Regime, though several popular options such as PPF and post office schemes are closed to them.3Income Tax Department. Non-Resident Individual for AY 2026-2027
Section 80CCE is the provision that binds 80C, 80CCC, and 80CCD(1) together under a single ₹1,50,000 ceiling.1Income Tax Department. Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) for AY 2026-2027 Your EPF deductions, life insurance premiums, PPF deposits, tuition fees, and NPS employee contributions all compete for that same space. Once your combined qualifying spending reaches ₹1.5 lakh, more of the same buys you no additional deduction under these sections.
Qualifying Investments
Each 80C investment carries its own lock-in period and return profile, and the lock-ins are non-negotiable.
Public Provident Fund
PPF has the longest lock-in among 80C options: the account matures after fifteen complete financial years from the end of the year it was opened.4National Savings Institute. Public Provident Fund Account Interest is tax-free, and partial withdrawals are allowed from the seventh year. PPF is not available to NRIs.
Equity Linked Savings Schemes
ELSS mutual funds have the shortest lock-in in the 80C basket: three years from the date of unit allotment.5SEBI Investor Education. A Guide to ELSS (Equity-Linked Savings Scheme) Returns are market-linked because the funds invest primarily in equities. The minimum investment starts at ₹500. If the investor dies, the nominee can withdraw after just one year from allotment.6Income Tax Department. Deductions
Employee Provident Fund
If you are salaried, your own monthly EPF contribution automatically counts toward the ₹1.5 lakh cap. Your employer’s matching contribution does not qualify under 80C.6Income Tax Department. Deductions For many salaried employees, EPF alone eats a large slice of the available deduction before any other planning. Check your salary slip before committing to extra 80C instruments; otherwise you may overshoot the cap with no additional benefit.
National Savings Certificate
NSC is a post office instrument with a fixed five-year maturity.7National Savings Institute. National Savings Certificate (VIII Issue) Interest compounds annually and is paid at maturity. Each year’s accrued interest is deemed reinvested and qualifies as a fresh 80C deduction for that year, which gives NSC a recurring benefit beyond the initial purchase. NSC is not available to NRIs.
Senior Citizens Savings Scheme
SCSS is open to individuals aged 60 or above, or 55 and above for those who retired under a superannuation or voluntary retirement scheme.8National Savings Institute. Senior Citizens Savings Scheme The tenure is five years, interest is paid quarterly, and the rate is among the higher ones for government-backed instruments.
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
A parent or legal guardian can open this account for a girl child. It matures 21 years from the date of opening, or on the girl’s marriage after she turns 18.9Union Bank of India. Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme After she turns 18, up to 50% of the balance can be withdrawn for higher education or marriage expenses. Deposits qualify under 80C and interest rates are among the highest for small savings schemes.
Tax-Saving Fixed Deposits
Banks offer five-year fixed deposits that qualify under 80C. The principal is locked for the full five years, with no premature withdrawal and no loan against the deposit. One point that surprises many first-time investors: the principal qualifies for deduction, but the interest is fully taxable each year at your slab rate.
Qualifying Payments
Section 80C is not limited to investment products. Several routine payments also count against the ₹1.5 lakh cap.
Life Insurance Premiums
Premiums on a life insurance policy for yourself, your spouse, or your children qualify, but the deductible amount is capped as a percentage of the sum assured. For policies issued on or after 1 April 2012, the annual premium cannot exceed 10% of the sum assured; for policies issued between 1 April 2003 and 31 March 2012, the limit is 20%.6Income Tax Department. Deductions Only the proportionate amount qualifies if your premium exceeds the threshold. ULIPs must be held for at least five years; surrender earlier reverses the deduction.
Home Loan Principal Repayment
The principal portion of your housing loan EMI qualifies under 80C. The interest component sits under Section 24(b) instead. The principal deduction shares the ₹1.5 lakh pool with everything else, so a large EMI can crowd out other claims.
Stamp Duty and Registration Charges
When you buy residential property, the stamp duty and registration fees paid in that financial year qualify for 80C. You must claim the benefit in the year of payment; there is no carry forward. Depending on the state, these charges can be substantial, which makes this a meaningful line for first-time buyers.
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees for the full-time education of up to two children at any recognised university, college, or school in India qualify under 80C.6Income Tax Department. Deductions Only the tuition component counts. Development fees, donations, hostel charges, and transport fees do not. If both parents are taxpayers, each can claim tuition fees for up to two children.
The Extra ₹50,000 for NPS Beyond the Cap
Your own contributions to the National Pension System count first under Section 80CCD(1), which sits inside the ₹1.5 lakh 80CCE ceiling. For salaried individuals, this is limited to 10% of salary (basic plus dearness allowance); for the self-employed, it is capped at 20% of gross income.10National Pension System Trust. Tax Benefits under NPS
The genuine additional benefit comes from Section 80CCD(1B), which provides a separate deduction of up to ₹50,000 for NPS contributions over and above the ₹1.5 lakh ceiling.10National Pension System Trust. Tax Benefits under NPS An NPS subscriber who has already used up the 80C limit can claim this ₹50,000 on top, taking the combined deduction to ₹2,00,000. Employer contributions to NPS are deductible separately under 80CCD(2), up to 10% of salary in the Old Regime and 14% in the New Regime.
What Happens If You Exit Early
Section 80C deductions are not unconditional. Several instruments carry holding requirements, and breaking them reverses the tax benefit.
Sell a residential property within five years from the end of the financial year in which you took possession, and the 80C deductions claimed on the home loan principal repayment get added back to your taxable income in the year of sale. Stamp duty and registration charges claimed for that property are treated the same way.
Life insurance has a parallel rule. Surrender a traditional policy within two years, or a ULIP within five, and deductions claimed in earlier years become taxable income in the year of termination.6Income Tax Department. Deductions A tax-saving FD broken before five years triggers the same treatment. The practical rule: don’t claim 80C on anything you are not prepared to hold through its lock-in.
Documentation and How to Claim
Every deduction must be backed by proof. The Income Tax Department can ask for verification during processing, and unsupported claims invite scrutiny. Keep the following ready:
- Insurance premium certificates from your insurer showing the amount paid, policy number, and sum assured.
- A provisional certificate from your lender splitting home loan principal and interest for the year.
- Passbook entries or deposit receipts for PPF, NSC, SCSS, and SSY.
- Consolidated account statements for ELSS from your mutual fund or the registrar (CAMS or KFintech).
- Fee receipts showing the tuition component separately.
- The registered sale deed or payment receipt for stamp duty and registration.
Salaried employees submit these proofs to their employer along with Form 12BB, the declaration form prescribed under Rule 26C. That lets the employer factor the deductions into monthly TDS. Miss the employer’s deadline and you can still claim on your return, but you will have paid higher TDS through the year and will wait for a refund.
On the return itself, most individuals file ITR-1 (Sahaj) or ITR-2. The deductions go into “Part C — Deductions and Taxable Total Income.” You enter the total claimed under Section 80C in the designated field, and the e-filing portal subtracts it from gross total income.1Income Tax Department. Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) for AY 2026-2027 The return asks for details per eligible payment: the policy or document identification number and the amount eligible. Don’t enter a lump sum without being able to break it down by instrument if asked.
