An SBA loan deferment pauses or reduces your scheduled payments for a set period when your business hits a temporary cash-flow problem. Who approves it depends on your loan type: for 7(a) and 504 loans you negotiate directly with the private lender that issued the money; for SBA disaster loans and COVID-19 EIDL loans, the SBA services the debt and sets the terms. In almost every case interest keeps accruing while you’re not paying, so deferment buys time and adds cost.
Who You Ask Depends on Your Loan
7(a) and 504 Loans
These loans are originated and serviced by private lenders, with Certified Development Companies handling the 504 side. Your lender makes the call. Short-term forbearance in the range of 30 to 90 days is common when you can show a temporary problem, and some lenders will go longer, but the length is negotiated case by case rather than set by a fixed rule.
If your 7(a) loan has been sold on the secondary market, the lender usually has to coordinate with the SBA’s fiscal and transfer agent before it can modify payment terms. Expect that to add time.
SBA Disaster Loans
New SBA disaster loans come with deferment already built in. Since late 2023, every new disaster loan automatically defers the first payment for 12 months from the date of initial disbursement, and interest does not begin accruing until that window ends.1U.S. Small Business Administration. SBA Announces Major Changes to Its Disaster Lending Program That 12-month structure is now permanent policy, reflected in recent declarations.2U.S. Small Business Administration. SBA Amends Declaration for Recent Storms If you need more relief after that initial year, you go to the SBA directly, not a private lender.
COVID-19 EIDL Loans
COVID EIDL borrowers received a 30-month deferment from disbursement, so most of these loans entered repayment in 2023 or 2024.3U.S. Small Business Administration. If you’re current (less than 90 days past due), you can apply for a one-time Hardship Accommodation Plan that reduces payments to 50% for six months, available once every five years, through the MySBA Loan Portal. Loans that become significantly delinquent are transferred to the Treasury Department’s Cross-Servicing Program, and once that transfer happens the SBA can no longer help you.4U.S. Small Business Administration. What You Need to Qualify
The underlying test is the same regardless of loan type: a temporary cash-flow problem caused by something outside your control, plus a credible plan to resume full payments. Lenders and the SBA want to see that your business hit a specific rough patch, not that it’s permanently failing.
Concrete triggers that typically support a request include a natural disaster damaging your location, road construction cutting off customer access, a major client going under, or a sharp local downturn. Vague hardship gets vague answers. If your financials show the business was already struggling well before the triggering event, or your recovery projections are thin, approval gets harder.
For COVID EIDL Hardship Accommodation specifically, the SBA requires borrowers to submit “a reasonable explanation for their temporary financial difficulty or cash flow problem” along with reasons the difficulty is expected to be short-term.4U.S. Small Business Administration. Documents to Submit
A deferment request is only as strong as the paperwork behind it. Start with a hardship letter that names the cause of your cash-flow problem, estimates how long the disruption will last, and explains how the business will get back on track. Keep it concrete. “Revenue dropped 40% after the highway on-ramp closed for reconstruction in March” carries more weight than “business has been slow.”
Beyond the letter, expect to provide:
- Recent profit-and-loss statement and balance sheet showing where the business stands now.
- A cash-flow projection, typically covering at least the next 12 months, showing how you plan to resume full payments.
- Business federal tax returns for roughly the last two years, plus personal financial statements and personal returns for anyone who signed a personal guarantee.
Submit the complete package at once. Piecemeal submissions slow review and read as disorganization. If approved, you’ll typically sign a modification agreement that spells out the revised payment schedule and how accrued interest will be handled. Read it before signing, because it replaces portions of your original loan agreement.
How to Send It
For 7(a) and 504 loans, contact your loan servicer or the officer who handled your original financing; larger lenders have a workout or loss-mitigation department. Ask up front how they want the package delivered, since some use email, some use a secure portal, and some prefer to open with a phone call before you send documents.
For COVID EIDL, the process runs through the MySBA Loan Portal, where you can check your loan status, make payments, and apply for payment assistance.4U.S. Small Business Administration. Manage Your EIDL For other SBA disaster loans, contact the SBA’s disaster loan servicing center directly.
What Deferment Actually Costs
Deferment is not free money. Interest continues to accrue on the outstanding principal the entire time your payments are paused or reduced.4U.S. Small Business Administration. Manage Your EIDL The one exception is the 12-month automatic deferment on new disaster loans, where interest doesn’t accrue during that initial window.2U.S. Small Business Administration. SBA Amends Declaration for Recent Storms
When you resume paying, that accumulated interest has to land somewhere. Two common outcomes:
- Capitalization. The accrued interest is added to your principal balance, and you pay interest on the larger amount going forward. Your monthly payment may rise, or the loan term may be extended.
- Balloon at maturity. For EIDL loans in particular, if you make no voluntary payments during deferment, unpaid interest becomes a balloon due at the end of the loan term. On a 30-year EIDL, that final payment can be substantially larger than borrowers expect.4U.S. Small Business Administration. Manage Your EIDL
The EIDL 50% payment reduction works the same way: interest is not waived during the reduced-payment period and continues to accrue on the full outstanding balance, feeding the eventual balloon.4U.S. Small Business Administration. Manage Your EIDL If you can afford to make voluntary payments during any deferment period, doing so meaningfully reduces long-term cost.
Effect on Your Credit
An approved deferment, reported correctly, generally doesn’t hurt your credit, because the lender is acknowledging you aren’t required to pay during that period. The account should not be reported as delinquent while the deferment is active. But how it appears on your credit file depends on how your lender codes the account, so before you sign the modification agreement, ask the lender how they will report the account during the deferment and try to get the answer in writing.
Missing payments without an approved deferment in place is what damages credit. If you’re already behind, apply for relief now rather than waiting for the situation to worsen. “In an approved deferment” and “delinquent” look nothing alike to a future lender.
When Deferment Isn’t the Right Tool
Deferment fits a temporary problem with a foreseeable end. If your business is facing a longer-term structural change, other paths may fit better.
A loan modification restructures the repayment terms rather than pausing them. Depending on the lender and SBA guidelines, that might mean extending the term, reducing the rate, or moving a balloon payment to maturity. You still owe every dollar, but the schedule adjusts to what you can realistically handle.
An SBA Offer in Compromise lets you settle the debt for less than the full balance, but the bar is high. The SBA’s own form states that an offer can be submitted only after all collateral has been liquidated, and you need to document that you genuinely cannot pay the full amount. The SBA has full discretion to accept or reject. COVID EIDL loans are not eligible for forgiveness through this process.5U.S. Small Business Administration. Offer in Compromise Timing matters: once your debt is referred to Treasury, collection fees are added to the balance, making any settlement harder.
Refinancing into a new SBA loan or conventional loan on better terms can also make sense if the business is still viable, though qualifying is often difficult for a business already in distress.
Whichever path you take, the worst move is silence. The sooner you contact your lender or the SBA, the more options stay on the table.
