A charge labeled “SAM’S” on your bank or credit card statement is almost always a Sam’s internet charge from Sam’s Club, the membership warehouse retailer — usually an online order, an automatic membership renewal, or a temporary authorization hold placed when a card is used on SamsClub.com. If you weren’t expecting it, the odds favor a forgotten auto-renewal or a pending hold before anything more serious.
How the Charge Appears on Your Statement
Sam’s Club transactions show up under several descriptor names, including “SAM’S CLUB,” “SAMS CLUB,” and “SAM’S CLUB #” followed by a store number. Online purchases and membership renewals processed through SamsClub.com may read slightly differently from in-store purchases, which is part of why they can look unfamiliar at first glance.
Is It an Automatic Membership Renewal?
This is the most common reason for a surprise charge. When you purchase or renew a Sam’s Club membership with a credit or debit card, you are automatically enrolled in the Auto Renew program. The annual fee is charged to any card on file, or any payment method saved in your digital wallet, roughly one day before your current membership term ends. A Club membership renews at $50 and a Plus membership renews at $110.1Sam’s Club. Benefits of Club and Plus Membership Some states add sales tax to the membership fee, so the total on your statement can be a few dollars above those round numbers.2Sam’s Club. Do I Have to Pay Taxes on Membership Fees
Sam’s Club sends an email up to 14 days before the renewal date, or a letter by mail up to 30 days before if there’s no valid email on file. That notice lists the renewal date and the amount.3Sam’s Club. How to Change Auto Renew Settings Miss the email, and the renewal looks like it came out of nowhere.
Is It a Pending Hold From an Online Order?
When you place an order on SamsClub.com, Sam’s Club puts a temporary hold on your card for the estimated order total. The hold appears as “pending” and exists to verify that funds are available. The actual charge is processed later — when the order ships, is picked up, or is delivered — and the hold amount may not match the final total if items are priced by weight, quantities change, or part of the order is canceled.4Sam’s Club. Temporary Holds and Charges For a short window you can see what looks like a duplicate or an oddly sized charge. Sam’s Club can’t remove these holds; only your bank can, and it can take up to 10 days after the order is complete for them to drop off.
A small $1 hold may also appear when Auto Renew checks that the card on file is still active. That dollar is released once the actual renewal fee goes through.3Sam’s Club. How to Change Auto Renew Settings
Is It a Real Online Order Charge?
For shipped orders, your card is charged when each item ships. Multi-item orders bill separately as each item ships, so one order can produce several smaller charges instead of one lump sum.5Sam’s Club. Online Order Billing Curbside pickup orders are charged when the pickup is completed. Delivery orders may include delivery fees, and Instacart-fulfilled orders can carry a separate service fee and a busy-pricing surcharge.6Sam’s Club. Instacart Home Delivery From Sam’s Club Some states also require product fees on items like electronics, batteries, tires, and mattresses to fund recycling programs; those are mandatory surcharges that add a few dollars to the total.7Sam’s Club. Did Someone Else on Your Account Use the Card?
A Sam’s Club membership can have add-on members, and a primary cardholder’s payment method may be saved for use by a spouse, family member, or anyone else with account access. Check with the household before assuming fraud.
How to Stop Future Auto-Renewal Charges
If the charge is a renewal you didn’t want, you can turn off Auto Renew. Three options:
- Online: sign in at SamsClub.com, go to Manage Membership under Account, select Cancel Membership to reach the Auto Renew unenrollment page, and confirm with “Yes, Cancel.”
- In club: visit the Member Services desk at any location.
- By phone: call 888-746-7726.
Turning off Auto Renew doesn’t cancel the membership itself; it just stops future automatic charges. To cancel the membership outright, use the in-club or phone options. Members who cancel keep access through the end of the paid year. One exception: if you were auto-billed through a Sam’s Club Credit Account, you have to contact the card issuer directly to unenroll rather than using the online settings.8Sam’s Club. What to Do if the Charge Is Unauthorized
If no one in your household made the purchase, treat the account as potentially compromised. Sam’s Club recommends three steps right away: reset your SamsClub.com password, delete all saved payment methods from your account, and contact your bank or card issuer to report the charge and open a dispute.9Sam’s Club. Unrecognized Charges or Orders If you reuse that password anywhere else, change it there too.
Your card issuer is the main route for recovering the money. Federal law caps liability for unauthorized credit card charges at $50, and many issuers waive even that. To preserve your rights under the Fair Credit Billing Act, send a written dispute to the issuer’s billing-inquiries address within 60 days of the statement date. Include your name, account number, and a description of the disputed charge. The issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days. While the investigation is pending, you don’t have to pay the disputed amount, and the issuer can’t report you as delinquent for it.10Federal Trade Commission. Watch for Phishing That Leads to Real Charges
Scammers impersonate Sam’s Club by email and phone, and handing over card details to a fake “reward” or “verification” prompt can produce a genuine unauthorized charge later. One recurring scheme is an email offering a $100 reward for completing a survey, using Sam’s Club branding to look real.11Fox News. Sam’s Club Reward Email Scam Alert Sam’s Club states it will never ask for your membership number, password, bank account, credit card number, or Social Security number by email, phone, or text, and will never threaten to cancel an order or close your account unless you provide personal information. Suspected phishing emails can be forwarded as an attachment to OnlineAbuse@walmart.com, and phone scams can be reported to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint or 877-FTC-HELP.12Sam’s Club.
