A same day passport office is what the State Department formally calls a passport agency or center, and there are 27 of them across the country. They can process your application and print your passport under one roof, sometimes within 24 hours, but only if you have international travel within the next 14 calendar days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. Appointments are required, they go fast, and showing up with the wrong paperwork means rescheduling that you probably don’t have time for.1U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center
A post office, library, or county clerk is not a same-day option. Those are acceptance facilities: they verify paperwork, take your fees, and mail everything to a processing center, where the file joins a queue of several weeks even with expedited service. Only the 27 agencies and centers handle the entire application through printing on site.1U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center
Who Qualifies for a Same-Day Appointment
You cannot book an agency appointment just because you want your passport faster. The State Department limits access to two situations.
Urgent International Travel
You qualify if you are leaving the country within the next 14 calendar days, or if you need a foreign visa placed in your passport within 28 days. Bring proof at the appointment. A printed flight itinerary is the most common form; hotel reservations and cruise tickets work for land or sea travel.1U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center
Life-or-Death Emergencies
You also qualify if an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is in hospice, or has a life-threatening illness or injury, and you need to travel within 14 days. Immediate family for this purpose means a parent or legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent.2U.S. Department of State. Get a Passport if you Have a Life-or-Death Emergency
If the emergency happens on a weekend, a federal holiday, or after 8:00 p.m. ET on a weekday, call 202-647-4000. During regular business hours, use the main passport line instead.2U.S. Department of State. Get a Passport if you Have a Life-or-Death Emergency
If your travel is more than 14 days out and there’s no emergency, you don’t qualify. Apply at an acceptance facility and pay for expedited processing, which the State Department describes as a few weeks rather than months.1U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center
How to Book the Appointment
Two ways in: online at passportappointment.travel.state.gov, or by calling the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 (TTY: 1-888-874-7793).3U.S. Department of State. Contact U.S. Passports The State Department says openly that it cannot guarantee availability, and in spring and summer, slots at New York, Miami, and Los Angeles can vanish within minutes of being posted.
If your closest agency has nothing open, keep refreshing. Cancellations free up slots throughout the day, and new appointment blocks are sometimes released without notice. Widen your search to smaller locations such as Buffalo, El Paso, or Honolulu, which usually have more room than the major metro agencies. Calling the passport line can also turn up appointments that don’t appear online. Full addresses and hours for all 27 locations are on the Bureau of Consular Affairs website.1U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center
What to Bring
Missing one document can force a reschedule, and rebooking inside a 14-day window may be impossible. Gather everything the night before.
The Application Form
Use Form DS-11 if this is your first passport, if your previous one was issued before you turned 16, if your last passport expired more than five years ago, or if it was lost or stolen. Use Form DS-82 to renew an undamaged adult passport issued within the last 15 years. Fill either form out in black ink with no corrections or white-out; if you make a mistake, start over on a clean form.4U.S. Department of State. Do not sign a DS-11 in advance. The agent will put you under oath and watch you sign it at the window.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship
Bring an original. A U.S. birth certificate has to show the seal or stamp of the issuing authority, your full name, date and place of birth, both parents’ full names, the date it was filed with the registrar (within one year of birth), and the registrar’s signature.6U.S. Department of State. If your birth certificate is missing any of the required elements, contact the vital records office in your state of birth for a certified copy right away.
Photo ID and a Photocopy
Bring a current government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or military ID. You also need a photocopy of both the front and back of that ID.
A Passport Photo
Bring a 2 x 2 inch color passport photo taken within the last six months, with a white or off-white background and no shadows. Your head should measure between 1 inch and 1⅜ inches from chin to top.8U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Photos Pharmacies and shipping stores take them. What It Costs
Every agency application carries a mandatory $60 expedite fee on top of the standard fees.9U.S. Department of State. United States Passport Fees
- New adult passport book on DS-11: $130 application + $35 execution + $60 expedite = $225
- Adult renewal on DS-82: $130 application + $60 expedite = $190 (no execution fee)
- Optional 1–3 day delivery if the agency mails the finished passport instead of holding it for pickup: $22.05
The $35 execution fee applies only to DS-11 applications, which is why renewals run $35 less.10U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees
Agencies take credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), debit cards (Visa or Mastercard), and contactless payments like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. They do not accept cash, checks, or money orders.10U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees This surprises people, because acceptance facilities usually do take checks. Bring a card.
What Happens at the Appointment
Plan for several hours on site even though face time with an agent is short. You’ll go through a security checkpoint on the way in, similar to a federal courthouse, then check in at a reception desk where staff verifies your appointment and gives your paperwork a quick look.
When your number is called, an agent reviews your forms, examines your citizenship evidence and ID, and takes payment. On a DS-11, the agent will place you under oath and have you sign the form in front of them. Once everything is accepted, you get a receipt and instructions for pickup or delivery.
If you’re flying within 24 to 48 hours, the agency often prints the passport the same day or the following morning for pickup at a will-call window. If your departure is a few days out, they may ship it to you by express mail. The agent will tell you which applies before you leave.
If the Applicant Is a Child Under 16
Same-day appointments for children come with a rule that trips up prepared parents: both parents or legal guardians must appear in person with the child.11U.S. Department of State. Apply for a Child’s Passport Under 16 There is no exception at the window itself, but there are three ways to substitute for an absent parent.
- Absent parent consents: they sign Form DS-3053 (Statement of Consent) in front of a notary and provide a photocopy of the ID they showed the notary. The present parent brings that notarized form to the appointment.
- Sole custody: bring a court order granting it, a certified birth certificate or adoption decree listing only one parent, or a certified death certificate of the other parent.
- Other parent cannot be located: submit Form DS-5525 (Statement of Exigent/Special Family Circumstances). The agency may ask for additional evidence such as a custody or restraining order.
Notarizing a DS-3053 on short notice is one of the most common last-minute scrambles. If both parents may not be able to attend together, start on the notarization the moment you book the appointment.11U.S. Department of State. Apply for a Child’s Passport Under 16
All children apply on Form DS-11 regardless of whether they’ve had a passport before. Children’s passports are valid for five years and cannot be renewed on DS-82.
When a Same-Day Office Isn’t the Right Path
Private companies advertising “same-day passport service” charge $200 to $600 on top of government fees to submit and pick up your application for you. They are not part of the State Department and get no special access or faster processing. The State Department’s own guidance says using a courier does not result in a faster passport than applying directly.12U.S. Department of State. Courier and Expeditor Companies They can save you a trip if the nearest agency is far or you can’t leave work, but you’re paying for convenience, not speed.
If your travel is more than a few weeks out and you’re eligible to renew, you may not need an agency at all. The State Department offers online passport renewal for eligible adults, and pairing it with expedited processing and 1–3 day delivery can get a new passport to your door in a couple of weeks.13U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail Online renewal doesn’t help inside the 14-day window or with first-time applications; for those, a regional agency is the only realistic route to a fast turnaround.
