To file a Sainsbury’s pet insurance claim form, log in to My Pet Portal, open the Claims page, and complete the online form with your pet’s condition, your vet’s details, and who should be paid; Sainsbury’s then emails your vet a separate form to complete their part.1Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance Vet Visits and Fees Cover You have 12 months from the treatment date to submit, and the insurer aims to process claims within seven working days of receiving everything it needs.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Three Ways to Submit
The quickest option is to ask your vet to submit everything through Vet Pawtal, the dedicated portal Sainsbury’s provides for practices. If your vet is registered, they handle most of the paperwork and you confirm the details on your side.3Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance Not all practices use it, so check before treatment.
If your vet doesn’t use Vet Pawtal, go to sainsburysbank.co.uk/myportal. Your policy number starts with PETSB, and you’ll need to register before your first login.4Sainsbury’s Bank. My Pet Portal On the Claims page, fill in your pet’s condition, the treating vet’s contact details, and who should receive payment. After you submit, Sainsbury’s emails the vet a form for their part of the claim.1Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance Vet Visits and Fees Cover Tell your vet to expect that email so it doesn’t sit unread in a spam folder.
For non-vet-fee claims, such as third-party liability, download a paper claim form from My Pet Portal or call the claims team on 0344 543 1032.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document Completed paper forms go to Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance, PO Box 7925, Bilston, WV1 9TT.
What to Attach
Before you start the form, gather:
- An itemised invoice showing every treatment, medication, and consultation charge. A lump-sum receipt isn’t enough; claims without itemised invoices are excluded from payment.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document
- A vet receipt showing the practice’s phone number and address.1Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance Vet Visits and Fees Cover
- A copy of the vet’s clinical notes for the condition you’re claiming for.1Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance Vet Visits and Fees Cover
- Your PETSB policy number from your certificate of insurance.
One cost catches people out: any fee your vet charges to fill in the claim form isn’t covered by the policy, and you pay it whether the claim is approved or not.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document Ask your practice what they charge before treatment.
Your Vet’s Section
Your vet completes a separate section covering the clinical details, treatment provided, and medical history. When you submit through My Pet Portal, Sainsbury’s contacts them directly by email with the form; you don’t need to chase, but a quick heads-up helps them prioritise it. How fast your vet returns their part is usually the biggest variable in how long the claim takes, because the insurer can’t assess anything until both halves are in.1Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance Vet Visits and Fees Cover On Vet Pawtal the exchange happens inside the portal, which tends to be quicker.
How Your Payout Is Calculated
Every claim is reduced by your excess, which is shown on your certificate of insurance. It can be a fixed amount, a percentage, or both. One example is a £100 fixed excess plus a 20% co-payment on the balance.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document
The excess applies per condition per policy year, not per visit, so multiple trips to the vet for the same condition in one policy year only trigger one excess deduction. The excess can also change as your pet ages: once your pet reaches a certain birthday, a mandatory percentage co-payment kicks in or increases. Sainsbury’s must notify you of this change at least a year before it takes effect, so read renewal letters carefully.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document
Deadlines and Waiting Periods That Can Sink a Claim
Submit within 12 months of the treatment date. Miss that window and the claim can’t be processed.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document
If this is your first Sainsbury’s policy, there’s a 14-day exclusion period for illness and a 3-day exclusion period for accidental injury or poisoning. Treatment for anything whose symptoms started in those windows won’t be covered. Both exclusion periods are waived if you switched from another insurer with no gap in cover.5Sainsbury’s Bank. Why Claims Get Rejected
The policy excludes pre-existing conditions and anything related to them, which includes symptoms that appeared during a waiting period. Routine care such as vaccinations, worming, and grooming isn’t covered either; the policy is for illness and injury, not maintenance.3Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance
Several other situations reliably lead to a refusal:
- Illness from something a vaccine could have prevented, where you didn’t follow your vet’s vaccination advice.6Sainsbury’s Bank. Does Pet Insurance Cover Vaccinations
- Dental claims without evidence of regular dental check-ups.7Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance With Dental Cover
- A claim with no itemised invoice.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document
- Your vet confirming you didn’t take reasonable care of your pet.2Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance for Cats and Dogs Policy Document
Processing Time and How You Get Paid
Sainsbury’s aims to assess claims within seven working days of receiving the completed form and all supporting documents.8Sainsbury’s Bank. Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance Claim Form That clock starts when both your submission and the vet’s section are in, not when you first click submit. Track progress by logging in to My Pet Portal.9Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance Policy Document Once assessed, you’ll get the decision with a breakdown of what’s covered, what falls outside your policy limits, and what you owe toward your excess.
If you paid the vet upfront, reimbursement is paid into your bank account, provided you entered your email address on the claim form. Without an email on file, Sainsbury’s posts a cheque made out to the policyholder named on the certificate.8Sainsbury’s Bank. Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance Claim Form
You can also ask Sainsbury’s to pay your vet directly, but it depends on the practice. Some vets accept insurer payments; others require you to pay upfront and claim back.3Sainsbury’s Bank. Pet Insurance On the claim form you choose who receives payment, so confirm with the practice first if you want them paid directly, otherwise you may end up paying twice while you wait for a refund.
Getting the Details Right
Be honest and thorough when describing your pet’s history. Under the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012, a deliberate or reckless misrepresentation lets the insurer void the policy and refuse all claims without returning premiums; a careless mistake triggers a proportional reduction instead.10Legislation.gov.uk. Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 A small omission that looks harmless can give the insurer legal grounds to cut your payout.
If Your Claim Is Refused
Call the claims team on 0344 543 1032 and ask for a written explanation of the decision. If you still disagree, file a formal complaint through Sainsbury’s Bank’s customer care. If the bank can’t resolve things within eight weeks, it will write confirming you can take the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service for a free independent review.11Sainsbury’s Bank. Get in Touch – How to Complain
Pull together your paperwork before escalating: the rejection letter, your original claim form, vet records, invoices, and any correspondence. The Ombudsman will want to see you gave Sainsbury’s a fair chance to put things right first, and a clean paper trail makes the review straightforward.
