RTGS Limits: India, Fedwire, and CHAPS Caps and Fees

RTGS limits are set in two layers: the central bank running the system sets the outer bounds, and your own bank sets a tighter cap inside those bounds. India’s RTGS requires at least ₹2,00,000 per transaction and has no maximum. The United States’ Fedwire allows individual transfers up to one penny less than $10 billion with no system-level minimum. The United Kingdom’s CHAPS has neither a floor nor a ceiling. Whatever the system allows, the amount you can actually move today depends on your bank, your account type, and whether you’re transacting online or at a branch.

System Limits by Country

India

The Reserve Bank of India fixes the RTGS minimum at ₹2,00,000 (2 lakh) per transaction and sets no upper ceiling.1Reserve Bank of India. RTGS System FAQ The floor is deliberate: it keeps RTGS reserved for high-value payments and routes smaller amounts through NEFT. If you need to send less than ₹2 lakh, RTGS simply isn’t available to you.

United States (Fedwire)

Fedwire permits individual transfers up to one cent short of $10 billion.2Federal Reserve. Federal Reserve Action to Expand Fedwire Funds Service There is no system-level minimum. In practice, US banks set their own floors for customer wires, and the fee structure makes small wires impractical. Most domestic Fedwire transfers are for a few thousand dollars and up.

United Kingdom (CHAPS)

CHAPS, operated by the Bank of England, imposes no minimum and no maximum.3Bank of England. CHAPS It’s historically been the rail for property completions and other large payments, but any value is technically eligible.

Why Your Bank’s Cap Usually Matters More

The central bank sets the outer wall. Your own bank builds a wall closer in, and that’s the one you’ll hit first. Those internal caps vary by channel and by account.

Mobile and internet banking carry the tightest daily limits. Banks restrict online transfers well below the system maximum so that compromised login credentials can’t drain an account in a single transaction. The specific cap depends on your bank, your account type, and how long you’ve been a customer. Corporate current accounts built for frequent large transactions get much higher online limits than personal savings accounts.

Branch transactions allow the highest ceilings. Walking in, showing identification, and completing the transfer in person lets you move substantially more than any digital channel permits. For the largest transfers, this is often the only option available to individual customers.

If the digital limit on your account is too low for a payment you need to make, most banks let you request a temporary or permanent increase. Expect a review of your account history and, in some cases, additional documentation. Business accounts typically see their limits reviewed annually.

Fees

India

The RBI caps what banks can charge customers for outgoing RTGS. Transfers between ₹2 lakh and ₹5 lakh cost no more than ₹25 plus applicable taxes; transfers above ₹5 lakh cost no more than ₹50. Incoming RTGS transfers must be free to the recipient.1Reserve Bank of India. RTGS System FAQ Banks may charge less than the ceiling, so check your bank’s published schedule.

United States (Fedwire)

The Federal Reserve charges participating banks a base fee of $0.97 per Fedwire transfer, with volume discounts that can bring the cost below $0.20. A $0.14 surcharge applies to transfers over $10 million, and transfers over $100 million add another $0.36.4Federal Reserve Financial Services. US customer-facing fees for outgoing domestic wires typically run from about $25 to $50, with incoming wires often cheaper or free. The exact amount depends on the institution.

RTGS vs. NEFT in India

Because RTGS in India starts at ₹2 lakh, anyone sending less has to use NEFT. The two systems differ on more than the floor:

  • Settlement: RTGS settles each transaction individually in real time. NEFT batches payments and processes them at intervals.
  • Minimum: RTGS requires ₹2 lakh. NEFT has none.
  • Maximum: RTGS has no cap. NEFT handles up to ₹2 lakh per transaction.5Central Bank of India. RTGS
  • Speed: RTGS settles almost instantly. NEFT settles within a couple of hours depending on the batch cycle.
  • Availability: Both run 24x7x365.

At exactly ₹2 lakh, RTGS is usually the better pick because the payment clears immediately rather than waiting for the next NEFT batch.

When Large Transfers Trigger Reporting

Moving large amounts by RTGS can create filing obligations, though these are tied to the money’s location rather than the transfer channel itself.

US persons with financial accounts outside the country whose combined value exceeds $10,000 at any point during the year must file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) on FinCEN Form 114. The deadline is April 15, with an automatic extension to October 15. Records for each reported account must be kept for five years from the filing due date.6Internal Revenue Service. Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR)

A boundary worth knowing: businesses receiving more than $10,000 in cash through a single or related transactions must file IRS Form 8300, but wire transfers and electronic funds transfers are not treated as “cash” for this purpose. A standard RTGS or Fedwire payment does not trigger Form 8300.7Internal Revenue Service. Understand How to Report Large Cash Transactions Banks file Currency Transaction Reports for cash deposits or withdrawals above $10,000; electronic transfers follow a separate reporting path. Other countries set their own thresholds, so confirm with your bank or tax advisor before moving large sums across borders.
