RTGS Full Form: Real Time Gross Settlement, Timings and Charges

RTGS is the full form of Real Time Gross Settlement, a payment system run by the Reserve Bank of India that moves money between banks one transaction at a time, the moment the instruction arrives. It is built for high-value transfers: the minimum you can send is ₹2 lakh, and there is no upper limit.1RBI. FAQs on RTGS

What the Name Actually Means

The two halves of the name each carry a specific idea. “Real time” means your payment instruction is processed as soon as it reaches the system, not held back for a scheduled batch. “Gross settlement” means every transaction is settled on its own, in full, without being pooled or netted against other payments moving in the opposite direction.1RBI. The contrast with NEFT is the easiest way to see it. NEFT tallies up what banks owe each other over a window and settles the net difference. RTGS does not. If Bank A sends ₹10 crore to Bank B, the RBI debits Bank A’s account and credits Bank B’s account for the full ₹10 crore, right then.1RBI. FAQs on RTGS

Because the settlement happens inside the books of the Reserve Bank itself, a completed RTGS payment is final and irrevocable. There is no window in which it can be reversed or clawed back once it settles.1RBI. How an RTGS Transfer Moves

You can start an RTGS transfer through internet banking, a banking app, or at a branch. To send money you need the amount, the beneficiary’s name and account number, the beneficiary’s bank and branch, and the 11-digit IFSC code of the receiving branch.2RBI. FAQs on RTGS

Your bank verifies the details and forwards the instruction to the RBI’s RTGS system. The RBI debits the sending bank’s settlement account and credits the receiving bank’s account. From there, the receiving bank is required to credit the beneficiary within 30 minutes of getting the funds transfer message.1RBI. FAQs on RTGS

RTGS is a credit-push system. Only the payer can initiate the transfer. A recipient cannot pull funds from someone else’s account through RTGS, and the system does not accept future-dated instructions.1RBI. FAQs on RTGS

Every transaction gets a 22-character Unique Transaction Reference (UTR) number for tracking. Once the beneficiary’s account is credited, the receiving bank sends a confirmation message back through the system, and your bank notifies you by SMS or email. This positive confirmation feature has been in place since November 2018.3FIDC India. RBI Circular on RTGS2RBI. FAQs on RTGS

Minimum, Maximum, and Charges

The minimum RTGS transfer is ₹2,00,000. There is no upper ceiling, so payments running into hundreds of crores go through the same channel as a ₹2 lakh transfer.1RBI. FAQs on RTGS

Since July 1, 2019, the RBI has waived the processing charges it used to levy on banks for RTGS. Customer-facing fees are capped as follows:1RBI. FAQs on RTGS

  • Inward transactions: free, no charges permitted.
  • Outward transfers of ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh: maximum ₹25 plus applicable taxes.
  • Outward transfers above ₹5 lakh: maximum ₹50 plus applicable taxes.

Banks can charge less than these caps, and many waive fees on digital transfers. Branch transfers may still carry the nominal fee.

When RTGS Runs

RTGS is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. It went round-the-clock on December 14, 2020, starting at 00:30 hours. Transactions initiated outside normal banking hours run through Straight Through Processing, meaning they are fully automated end to end.4Times of India. RTGS Compared With NEFT and IMPS

India has three main electronic transfer channels, and choosing between them mostly comes down to the amount and how quickly you need finality.

  • RTGS settles each transaction individually in real time. Minimum ₹2 lakh, no maximum. Built for high-value, time-critical transfers.
  • NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer) settles in half-hourly batches. No minimum (starts at ₹1), no maximum. Suited to routine transfers where a short wait is fine.
  • IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) settles individually and instantly like RTGS. Minimum ₹1, maximum ₹5 lakh. Best for smaller urgent transfers, especially from mobile.7Razorpay. Difference Between NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS

For transfers below ₹2 lakh, RTGS is not an option at all; NEFT or IMPS carries them. Above that threshold, RTGS is the standard when settlement finality matters.

If a Transfer Fails

Sometimes the receiving bank cannot credit the beneficiary’s account, for instance if the account number is wrong, the account is frozen, or it does not exist. In that case the receiving bank must return the funds to the sending bank within one hour of receipt or by the end of the RTGS business day, whichever comes first. The sending bank then reverses the debit in your account.1RBI. FAQs on RTGS

If a bank misses that window, you are entitled to automatic compensation at the current repo rate plus 2 percent for each day of delay. You do not need to file a complaint to get it; banks are expected to credit it on their own. If the issue is still not resolved, you can escalate through the RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.1RBI. Extra Requirement for Very Large Corporate Transfers

One boundary worth knowing about if you deal in very large payments: any single RTGS or NEFT payment of ₹50 crore or more made by a non-individual entity must carry the 20-digit Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) codes of both the sender and the beneficiary. Individual-to-individual transfers are exempt, as are central and state government departments. The remitting bank is responsible for capturing the LEI information, and both sides need valid LEI records for qualifying transfers.8RBI. FAQs on LEI for NEFT and RTGS

Beneficiary Name Verification

Since April 1, 2025, the RBI has required banks to offer beneficiary name verification for RTGS and NEFT, so you can confirm the recipient’s account name before you complete a transfer. The infrastructure for the feature was built by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).9Corporate Genie.
