Rooms To Go Extended Warranty: Coverage, Cost, and Claims

The Rooms To Go extended warranty, sold as the Guard It Furniture Protection Plan, is an optional three-year service contract administered by a third party (Guardian, Fortegra, or Extend) that covers a specific list of manufacturer defects after the first year and a specific list of single-incident accidental damage starting the day of delivery. There’s no deductible. The coverage is narrower than most sales pitches suggest, and nearly every denial traces back to an exclusion written into the contract.

What Guard It Covers

Coverage splits into two buckets. Manufacturer defects are picked up only after Rooms To Go’s own one-year warranty expires, because the retailer’s customer care team handles defect claims during that first year. Accidental damage is covered from delivery onward.

Manufacturer Defects (Years Two and Three)

  • Warping, cracking, breaking, or separation of frames, legs, panels, drawers, drawer guides, leaf tracks, arms, spindles, and pedestal bases.
  • Cracking or peeling of the finish on solid wood, wood veneer, wood laminate, stone, faux stone, marble, tile, or granite.
  • Seam separation severe enough to expose cushion foam, filling, or stuffing.
  • Breaking or bending of springs, coils, and mechanisms.
  • Failure of motors, hydraulics, clocks, and other electrical components, which matters most for power recliners and similar pieces.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

Adjustable bed bases get a longer window: seven years of mechanical or electrical failure coverage rather than three.2Extend. Guard It Protection Plan for Rooms To Go

Accidental Damage (From Delivery)

Each covered incident has to be a single, identifiable event. Gradual accumulation is not covered, no matter the cause.

  • Accidental food and beverage stains, pet biological stains, ballpoint pen ink, and nail polish on fabric, vinyl, or leather. Nubuck, suede, and buffed leather are not included.
  • Punctures, cuts, and rips in wicker, fabric, leather, or vinyl from a single incident.
  • Chips or gouges in wood, stone, marble, tile, or granite that penetrate the finish and expose the substrate underneath.
  • Breakage of glass components and loss of silvering on mirrors.
  • Breakage of lamps, but not bulbs.
  • Minor burn marks from cigarettes, cigars, or tobacco pipes, limited to one incident.
  • Rings or marks on wood or stone from household food and beverages, and heat marks or blistering from normal household items.
  • One-time breakage of an outdoor umbrella or its mechanism.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

What Guard It Does Not Cover

The exclusion list is where most claims die. Read it before you decide the plan is worth the price.

Wear and tear is excluded. Gradual fading, fabric wearing thin, cushion foam losing its bounce, and general soiling are all treated as normal use, not covered damage. These are also among the most common reasons customers try to file claims.

Leather problems are heavily restricted. Cracking, peeling, stress tears, and scaling of leather are not covered as defects, and this applies to every leather type the contract names: bonded, blended, nubuck, suede, split, and bicast. Stain coverage, as noted above, excludes nubuck, suede, and buffed leather entirely.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

Many stain types don’t qualify. The plan excludes dye, bleach, paint, acid, corrosive products, nail polish remover, and chewing gum. Human biological stains like perspiration and body oils are out. So are accumulated stains, gradual darkening in body-contact areas, and any stain of unknown origin. One pet biological stain may be covered; repeated pet staining and pet-related soiling are not.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

Other common exclusions:

  • Pre-existing damage present at delivery.
  • Items sold as “Pre-Owned,” “Final Sale,” or “AS-IS.”
  • Furniture used in a business, rental, or communal setting.
  • Plastic parts, knobs, rollers, baskets, remotes, throw pillows, decorative stitching, brass or plating, and pictures.
  • Odors from any cause.
  • Damage from assembling ready-to-assemble furniture, from modifications, from ignoring care instructions, or from using non-approved cleaners.
  • Fire, smoke, insects, extreme temperatures, and natural disasters.
  • Unauthorized repairs or cleaning attempts.
  • Scratches, rips, or gouges that don’t clearly penetrate the upholstery or finish.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

Mattresses, box springs, bunkie boards, and area rugs are excluded from Guard It outright. Mattresses carry their own separate manufacturer warranties.

How Guard It Fits With Rooms To Go’s Other Warranties

The structure has layers that are easy to confuse. Rooms To Go’s standard manufacturer warranty, handled directly by its customer care team, covers defects discovered within one year of delivery and any damage that occurred during delivery itself.3Rooms To Go. Extended Service Contract Guard It extends defect coverage past that first year and layers accidental damage coverage on top from day one.

ForceField Fabric Protection is a different product. It’s a stain-resistant treatment applied before delivery, with a three-year limited warranty covering only food and beverage stains; bodily fluids, chemicals, burns, and wear are excluded. Customers who bought ForceField have to try the included cleaner before filing a claim.4Rooms To Go. What It Costs

Rooms To Go doesn’t publish a flat price. Protection plans from the retailer generally run 5% to 10% of the furniture’s purchase price, so a $1,000 sofa would carry a plan cost somewhere in the range of $50 to $100. ForceField has been documented at 10% of the purchase price.5Top Class Actions. How To File a Claim

Call the administrator on your contract, not Rooms To Go first. The three possibilities are:

  • Guardian: 1-877-680-2620 or gppclaims.com
  • Fortegra: 888-835-8740 or 4repairs.net
  • Extend: 877-248-7707 or customers.extend.com/claims

Be ready to describe exactly when and how the damage happened, where on the piece it is, and how large it is. Expect to upload photos. Guardian’s form, for example, asks for a photo of the full piece plus a close-up of the damage.6Guardian Protection Products. GPP Customer Service Request

Do not try to clean the damage yourself, and do not hire an outside technician before you get authorization. The contract warns that unauthorized cleaning or repairs may void coverage.3Rooms To Go. Extended Service Contract

If the claim is approved, you’ll get a Unique Authorization Number. You then call Rooms To Go at 1-800-766-6786 to schedule the service technician using that number. The technician does the actual cleaning or repair. If the piece can’t be fixed, the administrator decides what comes next: replacement parts, a full replacement, or a reselection of equal value.3Rooms To Go. Extended Service Contract

Cancelling the Contract

You can cancel Guard It at any time. Cancel within 90 days of purchase and you get a full refund minus any claims already paid. After 90 days, the refund is prorated across the three-year term, again minus claims paid. The contract is not transferable, so if you sell the furniture, the coverage doesn’t go with it. State-specific rules modify these terms in Florida and Georgia.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

Arbitration and the Liability Cap

Guard It includes a binding arbitration clause. Disputes go to individual arbitration through the American Arbitration Association, and buyers waive the right to join class actions. There’s a 30-day window after purchase to opt out by sending written notice to 4warranty Corporation in Jacksonville, Florida, or emailing legal@fortegra.com. Miss that window and arbitration is the only path.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

Payouts on the plan are capped at the lesser of the cost of authorized repairs, the cost of a comparable replacement, or the original purchase price of the furniture (excluding taxes, delivery, and finance charges). Once claims hit that cap on a given piece, the coverage for that piece is used up.1Fortegra. Guard It Service Contract Terms

What Buyers Actually Report

Reviews of the Rooms To Go claims experience skew negative. The Better Business Bureau lists 1,381 complaints against Rooms To Go over the most recent three-year period, 854 of them categorized as service or repair issues.7BBB. Rooms To Go Complaints On ConsumerAffairs, the retailer sits at 1.6 out of 5 across more than 3,200 reviews, with 79% of them one-star.8ConsumerAffairs. Rooms To Go Reviews

The recurring themes: claim denials tied to exclusions customers say were never explained in the store, long waits for replacement parts (months, sometimes more than a year), and difficulty getting follow-up after an initial service visit. Several complaints describe salespeople pitching the plan as covering “any damage” when the contract covers a narrower, more specific list.7BBB. Rooms To Go Complaints

The practical read: the plan does what the contract says, and the contract excludes most of what causes everyday furniture to look worn. If your concern is a one-time spill, a torn seam, a broken recliner motor, or a child chipping a tabletop, Guard It can help. If your concern is a leather sofa cracking in year three, cushions going flat, or stains that build up over time, this plan won’t cover it.
