Robinhood Unlimited Day Trades: Intraday Margin, Costs, and Risks

As of June 4, 2026, Robinhood allows unlimited day trades in a margin account with no $25,000 minimum balance. The old pattern day trader rule, which capped most traders at three day trades per five business days unless they kept $25,000 in the account, no longer applies. In its place, Robinhood monitors your account in real time to make sure you have enough equity to support the positions you hold during the trading day.1Robinhood. Day Trading2FINRA. What’s Different on Robinhood

Four things changed on the platform when the new framework took effect:1Robinhood. Day Trading

  • The day-trade counter is gone. You can buy and sell the same security as many times as you want in a single session.
  • The $25,000 balance floor is gone. The only equity minimum for a margin account is the longstanding $2,000 regulatory requirement.
  • Existing pattern day trader flags were cleared. Accounts that previously carried the designation also became eligible for Robinhood’s High-Yield Cash Program and Stock Lending.
  • Real-time margin monitoring is now active. Robinhood watches your equity against your open positions throughout the day and will block trades that would push you into a deficit.

The old rule traces back to 2001, when the NASD added it to Rule 4210 after retail losses during the dot-com bust.3tastytrade. Pattern Day Trading Commissions were high then, and the $25,000 floor was meant to keep small accounts from being churned to zero. With commissions at zero across major brokerages and real-time risk tools now standard, FINRA concluded the rule had become “restrictive, onerous and unnecessary in today’s markets.”2FINRA. The New Guardrail: Intraday Margin

The flat $25,000 balance has been replaced by a position-based test. What matters now is whether your equity is sufficient to support the market exposure of your open positions at any point during the day.4FINRA. Intraday Margin Requirements

Brokerages had a choice: monitor in real time and block risky trades up front, or calculate deficits after the close and issue margin calls. Robinhood chose real-time monitoring. The practical effect is that an order which would leave your account under-margined simply won’t go through.1Robinhood. Day Trading

The standard maintenance margin for long equity positions is 25% of current market value. Brokerages can set higher “house” requirements at their discretion, so Robinhood may require more than the FINRA minimum on certain securities. The new rules also explicitly cover zero-days-to-expiration options, which had become a notable source of intraday risk.4FINRA. Intraday Margin Requirements

If You Hit a Deficit

When your equity falls below the maintenance level, you have an intraday margin deficit and must resolve it “as promptly as possible” by depositing funds or closing positions.4FINRA. Intraday Margin Requirements On Robinhood, the platform may liquidate positions without prior notice if a deficit is still outstanding at the end of the trading day.5Robinhood. Why Do I Have an Account Deficit

There is also a pattern-of-failure trigger. If a trader repeatedly fails to meet intraday margin requirements and a deficit isn’t resolved within five business days, the brokerage must freeze the account from margin trading for 90 calendar days, or until the deficit is satisfied, whichever comes first. Small deficits are excluded from the count: anything less than the lesser of $1,000 or 5% of account equity doesn’t count toward the “practice” threshold, and firms can also exempt failures caused by extraordinary circumstances.6Federal Register. So the 90-day freeze didn’t disappear. It just hinges on repeated margin failures now instead of day-trade counts.

What About a Cash Account?

The intraday margin framework applies to margin accounts. In a Robinhood cash account, buying power is limited to settled funds, and there is no margin borrowing. Proceeds from stock and options sales take one trading day to settle before they can be used again.7Robinhood. Settlement and Buying Power Trading with unsettled funds in a cash account can result in good-faith or free-riding violations under Regulation T.8FINRA. Frequent Intraday Trading Cash accounts were never subject to the pattern day trader rule in the first place, but settlement timing naturally limits how often you can trade in a single day.

What Margin Costs on Robinhood

Borrowing to day trade isn’t free. Interest tiers on Robinhood depend on whether you subscribe to Robinhood Gold, which runs $5 per month or $50 per year. Gold members get the first $1,000 of margin with no interest charge. Above that, rates start at 5% on balances up to $50,000 and step down to 3.95% on balances above $50 million.9Robinhood. Margin Rates Gold also includes discounted fees on index options and futures, Morningstar research, and larger instant deposits.10Robinhood. The Risks the Rule Change Didn’t Remove

Easier access to day trading isn’t the same as lower risk. FINRA warns that frequent margin trading can lead to losses greater than the amount you deposited, and that these strategies are generally inappropriate for investors with limited resources, limited experience, or low risk tolerance. The agency’s guidance is blunt: never fund intraday trading with money you can’t afford to lose.8FINRA. Frequent Intraday Trading The SEC adds that leverage can cause very quick losses that may not be apparent until the damage is already done.11SEC Investor.gov. State securities regulators were less enthusiastic about the change. The North American Securities Administrators Association opposed the proposal in a February 2026 comment letter, calling it a fundamental overhaul that lacked adequate guardrails and arguing that FINRA justified the change by citing real-time monitoring capability without actually requiring it.12NASAA. NASAA Comment Letter Re SR-FINRA-2025-017 Robinhood did choose real-time monitoring, but that is a firm-level choice rather than a rule-level requirement, and other brokerages may handle it differently.

Taxes Get Harder With Frequent Trading

Two tax issues matter more once you start trading often. First, wash-sale rules disallow a tax loss on a security if the same or a substantially identical security is bought within 30 days before or after the sale, a 61-day window total. The disallowed loss gets added to the cost basis of the replacement shares, so the benefit is deferred rather than lost outright. Robinhood reports wash sales on your annual 1099, but tracking them across multiple brokerage accounts is your responsibility.13Robinhood. Wash Sales

Second, any gain on a position held less than a year is taxed as a short-term capital gain at ordinary income rates, which range from 10% to 37%.14Rice University Baker Institute. Robinhood Trading and Relevant Tax Compliance Considerations Day trading, by definition, generates almost entirely short-term gains. A profitable year of frequent trading can produce a larger tax bill than a buy-and-hold investor would owe on the same dollar amount of gains.
