A “RIOTGAMESIN” charge on your bank or card statement is a payment to Riot Games, Inc.—the maker of League of Legends, VALORANT, and Teamfight Tactics—processed through PayPal. It usually reflects an in-game purchase of virtual currency, skins, or other digital content. If someone in your household plays a Riot game, the charge is almost certainly legitimate. If not, you can get it reversed through Riot, PayPal, or your card issuer.
Check These Explanations First
Before disputing anything, rule out the ordinary reasons the charge might be there. Riot’s games are free to play and earn revenue through in-game purchases, so a household member, often a child or teenager, may have bought Riot Points, VALORANT Points, or similar currency without telling you. Riot games also let players send gifts, which means a purchase on someone else’s account can hit a payment method linked to yours.
Saved payment details are another common cause. If PayPal was ever connected to a Riot account, it may still be the default option months later. Your PayPal transaction history will typically show the specific game and amount, which is usually enough to identify what happened.
If You Did Not Authorize the Charge, Contact Riot First
If no one in your household made the purchase, Riot Games has a dedicated process for reporting unauthorized charges, and you can use it even if you have no Riot account. You will need to give Player Support the first six and last four digits of the card along with the expiration date so Riot can trace the transaction. Once Riot confirms the charge is unauthorized, it states it will issue a refund within three to five business days, suspend the account that made the purchase, and remove your payment information from any linked Riot accounts.1Riot Games Support. One boundary worth noting: if the charge on your statement was not actually paid to Riot, Riot’s support page directs you to your financial institution instead.1Riot Games Support. Unauthorized Charge From Riot Games
Disputing Through PayPal
Because the charge went through PayPal, you can also open a dispute in PayPal’s Resolution Center. PayPal gives users 180 days from the transaction date to report an unauthorized transaction, and eligible claims do not leave the user liable.2PayPal. Unauthorized Transactions To escalate a dispute to a formal claim that PayPal investigates and decides, at least seven days generally must have passed since the payment date. Unescalated disputes close automatically after 20 days.3PayPal. How Do I Open a Dispute With a Seller
Disputing Through Your Bank or Card Issuer
If Riot and PayPal do not resolve the issue, you can dispute the charge with your bank or credit card issuer, and federal law gives you real protection. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, liability for unauthorized credit card charges is capped at $50, and if only your account number was stolen rather than the physical card, your liability is zero.4Federal Trade Commission. Lost or Stolen Credit, ATM, and Debit Cards To preserve full protection, submit the dispute in writing to the card issuer’s billing inquiry address within 60 days of the statement that contains the charge. The issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days, and you are not required to pay the disputed amount during the investigation.5Federal Trade Commission. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges
Debit cards have tighter deadlines. Reporting within two business days of discovering the unauthorized charge limits liability to $50. Between two and 60 days, the cap rises to $500. After 60 days, you could be liable for the full amount.4Federal Trade Commission. Lost or Stolen Credit, ATM, and Debit Cards Report debit card fraud immediately.
Why a Chargeback Should Be a Last Resort
If a Riot account in your household is tied to the charge, going straight to your bank has consequences. A chargeback triggers an immediate lock on the Riot account, and the player cannot regain access until the owed amount is repaid through Riot’s dedicated repayment portal.6Riot Games. Riot Games Chargeback Repayment If the charge involved a gift, both the sender’s and recipient’s accounts are suspended, and multiple chargebacks on the same account can lead to a permanent ban.7Riot Games. Global Refund Policy
For VALORANT and 2XKO, Riot attempts to remove the purchased content after a chargeback. If the content has already been used or cannot be removed, Riot deducts the equivalent amount of in-game currency, which can leave the balance negative. Even bank-initiated fraud alerts and information requests may be treated with the same severity as a full chargeback.7Riot Games. Global Refund Policy Contacting Riot support first is usually the better move when the account belongs to someone you know.
If Someone in Your Household Actually Made the Purchase
When the charge is legitimate but you want it reversed, Riot’s refund window is narrow. Unused content can be refunded within 14 days of purchase, provided the item appears on the company’s refundable list, with the refund going back to the original payment method. League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics on PC also give players three refund tokens for eligible content purchased within the last 90 days.7Riot Games. Global Refund Policy
Purchases made through third-party storefronts like the Apple App Store, Google Play, PlayStation Store, or Xbox Store cannot be refunded by Riot and have to be handled through the platform where the payment was made.7Riot Games. Global Refund Policy Outside the refund windows, Riot’s terms describe its policy as “strict” and note that once digital content is accessed or downloaded, the right to cancel and receive a refund is generally forfeited.8Riot Games. Preventing Another Unexpected Charge
If the charge came from a compromised account, Riot’s support team will reverse unauthorized purchases and restore any spent refund tokens once the breach is verified.7Riot Games. If children in your home play Riot games, the Parent Portal lets guardians set hard spending limits on a child’s Riot account, view 30 days of purchase history, and manage game access and social features. Those controls only cover purchases made directly through Riot’s platform. Mobile and console store spending has to be managed through the parental settings on those platforms.9Riot Games Support.
