Resident to NRO Conversion Form: Fields, Documents, and Submission

To convert your resident Indian bank account to an NRO account, you download your bank’s resident to NRO conversion form, complete it with your overseas address, passport, visa, PAN, and tax residency details, sign it, and submit it to your home branch either in person or by post along with self-attested or notarized KYC copies. Most major banks — including SBI, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank — publish their own version of the form on their NRI services page, and each account you hold needs its own form or a consolidated request letter listing all account numbers.

Why You Have to File This Form at All

The Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 defines a person resident in India by reference to physical stay of more than 182 days in the preceding financial year. But the moment you leave India for employment, business, or any purpose that suggests an uncertain-duration stay abroad, FEMA treats you as a person resident outside India, regardless of the day count.1India Code. The Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999

The RBI’s Master Circular on NRO Accounts is explicit that your existing resident account “should be designated as a Non-Resident (Ordinary) Account” once your status changes. The only carve-out is for people moving to Nepal or Bhutan, whose accounts stay in resident status.2Reserve Bank of India. Master Circular on Non-Resident Ordinary Rupee (NRO) Account

Continuing to operate a resident account after your status changes is a FEMA contravention. Section 13 allows a penalty of up to three times the amount held in the non-compliant account where the sum is quantifiable, or up to ₹2 lakh where it is not, with an additional ₹5,000 per day for a continuing violation.3India Code. Documents to Gather Before You Start

Banks routinely reject incomplete submissions, and a missing document can add weeks when you are mailing from abroad. Assemble everything before you open the form.

  • The conversion request form itself, downloaded from your bank’s NRI services page. Every joint holder on the account must sign.
  • A self-attested copy of your passport showing your name, photo, and validity. If you now hold a foreign passport, include your PIO, OCI, or resident card.
  • A self-attested copy of your valid visa or work permit. Not required if you hold PIO or OCI status.4State Bank of India. Resident to NRO Conversion Form
  • A self-attested copy of your PAN card. For a savings account, Form 60 can be submitted in place of PAN, but for converting a resident current account, PAN is mandatory.5ICICI Bank. Convert Your Resident Savings Account to an NRO Account
  • Overseas address proof: a recent foreign utility bill, driving license, bank statement, or rental agreement. The address on this document must match what you write on the form exactly.
  • Your Tax Identification Number in your country of residence, such as a U.S. Social Security Number. This is needed for reporting under the Common Reporting Standard and Inter-Governmental Agreements.4State Bank of India. Resident to NRO Conversion Form
  • A FATCA declaration if you have U.S. tax obligations. Most banks build this into the conversion form; some issue it separately.

Some banks also ask for a passport-sized photograph, so check the instructions on your bank’s own form before finalizing the package.

Filling Out the Form Field by Field

The form is short, but a handful of fields cause most of the rejections. What follows tracks the SBI and HDFC Bank versions; other banks use a similar layout.

At the top, enter the existing resident savings or current account number that you want redesignated. If you hold more than one account at the same bank, you need either a separate form per account or a single covering letter listing every account number, depending on what the bank accepts.

The address block has two fields. The overseas address is mandatory and must match your address proof character for character, right down to the postal code. Mismatches are one of the most common reasons forms come back. The permanent address can be your overseas address or an Indian one.

The identity block asks for your passport number, issue date, place of issue, nationality, and expiry date, followed by the same set of details for your visa or work permit. Copy these straight off the documents rather than working from memory.

The tax residency block asks for your country of tax residence and your TIN there. SBI’s form includes a declaration that the bank may report your account details to the Central Board of Direct Taxes under CRS and other international agreements. Read this before you sign — it is a legal undertaking.4State Bank of India. Resident to NRO Conversion Form

Finally, sign. Your signature has to match the one on file with the bank. If it has drifted since you opened the account, flag this at submission, because some banks want a signature update form filed alongside the conversion request.

How to Submit the Form

You have two routes. Which one you use depends on whether you can visit India.

In Person at Your Home Branch

Walk in with the completed form, the originals, and self-attested copies. A bank official verifies the copies against the originals on the spot, so no external attestation is needed. HDFC Bank confirms that face-to-face submission works this way: self-attested copies verified by the official in your presence.6HDFC Bank. Resident to NRO Account Conversion Process

By Post or Courier From Abroad

If you cannot travel, mail the package to your home branch. SBI instructs NRIs to download the conversion letter and post or courier it with the supporting documents. Email is not accepted for security reasons.7State Bank of India. NRE/NRO Account Opening Procedure

When you submit from abroad, every copy must be attested by an authorized authority. Acceptable attesters include officials at overseas branches of Indian scheduled commercial banks, a Notary Public, a Court Magistrate or Judge, or the Indian Embassy or Consulate General in your country of residence.6HDFC Bank. HDFC Bank also accepts scanned copies by registered email if the documents are self-attested and certified by a designated authority, which sits between physical submission and a fully digital option. No major bank currently offers the conversion through net banking.

What Happens After You Submit

The bank’s compliance team runs a re-KYC check, verifies your foreign residency documents, and matches your signature against records. Processing usually takes seven to ten business days. Once complete, the account status flips from resident to NRO in the bank’s system, and most banks confirm the change through SMS, email, or an update visible in internet banking.

If You Hold the Account Jointly

The RBI allows an NRO account to be held jointly with a resident Indian on a “former or survivor” basis.8Reserve Bank of India. Accounts in India by Non-Residents

In practice, the NRI has to be the primary holder. During the NRI’s lifetime, the resident joint holder cannot operate the account independently unless they are named as a Power of Attorney or mandate holder. Full operating rights pass to the resident joint holder only on the death of the primary holder.9ICICI Bank. Holding an NRI Joint Account: All You Need to Know

HDFC Bank notes that when a holder’s status changes, the update has to flow across every account relationship, including accounts where you are a joint holder rather than the primary. If your name sits on someone else’s resident account, raise that with the bank at the same time.6HDFC Bank. Resident to NRO Account Conversion Process

Linked Deposits and Demat Accounts

The conversion form redesignates your savings or current account, but it does not clean up everything linked to it. Fixed Deposits and Recurring Deposits under your resident account have to be redesignated as NRO deposits, because FEMA does not permit NRIs to hold resident fixed deposits at all.10HDFC Bank. 7 Reasons to Convert Your Resident FDs Into an NRO Deposit The redesignation changes the label without breaking the contract: the deposits keep earning at the originally contracted rate until maturity, but the bank starts deducting TDS at the non-resident rate on interest from the conversion date onward.

A resident demat account also has to be converted, and it can only become an NRO demat account, not NRE. Update your residential status to non-resident on the Income Tax Department website first, because brokers cannot process the change without it. For HDFC Bank’s Investment Services Account, you submit a bank statement showing NRO status, a request letter with your ISA details, self-attested PAN and passport, overseas address proof, and a mutual fund FATCA form.6HDFC Bank. Broker-specific fees and paperwork vary. Zerodha charges ₹500, takes up to seven working days, and suspends Kite access during the process. The document set includes an equity application form, an account closure form, an account modification form, FATCA and FEMA declarations, and an NRI client details form, alongside the standard passport, visa, PAN, and address proof.
