You can renew your PTIN at IRS.gov in about 15 minutes through the Tax Professional PTIN System at rpr.irs.gov. The 2026 fee is $18.75, and your renewed number is active on screen as soon as payment clears.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Reminds Tax Pros to Renew PTINs for the 2026 Tax Season Every paid preparer needs a current PTIN before signing or submitting any federal return for compensation, so finishing this before January keeps you working through filing season without interruption.2Internal Revenue Service. Deadline and Fee for 2026
All PTINs expire on December 31 regardless of when they were originally issued. The renewal window usually opens in mid-October, giving you roughly two and a half months to get it done.3Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions: PTIN Application/Renewal Assistance Enrolled Agents, CPAs, and attorneys renew on the same schedule as every other paid preparer.
The 2026 fee is $18.75, split between a $10.00 IRS user fee and an $8.75 fee to the third-party contractor that runs the system.4Federal Register. Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) User Fee Update If you remember paying $19.75 last year, the IRS portion dropped from $11.00 to $10.00 effective September 30, 2025. The fee is non-refundable. You can pay by credit card, debit card, ATM card, or eCheck.2Internal Revenue Service. PTIN Requirements for Tax Return Preparers
Renewal is technically possible after December 31, but an expired PTIN means you cannot legally sign or submit returns for compensation until the renewal clears. If your PTIN has been inactive or expired for more than three consecutive years, the system will not let you renew at all; you have to submit a new registration application instead.3Internal Revenue Service. Step by Step on IRS.gov
Log In Through ID.me
The IRS has changed how you access the PTIN system. If you have a Social Security number, you are automatically routed to ID.me for identity verification and login. First-time ID.me users have to create an account before reaching the PTIN dashboard, so budget extra time if you have never used it. Have a government-issued photo ID ready; the verification requires it. Preparers without a Social Security number continue to use the older login process.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Reminds Tax Pros to Renew PTINs for the 2026 Tax Season If you already have an ID.me account from another government service, the same credentials work here.
Review Your Information and Answer Compliance Questions
Once you are in the dashboard, select the renewal option. The system walks you through verifying your personal and business information, including mailing address and professional credentials. You will then answer compliance questions covering felony convictions and whether your own federal tax obligations are current. The IRS runs a suitability check that looks at roughly four years of your personal filing and payment history for timely filing, timely payment, and outstanding liabilities.5Internal Revenue Service. 25.29.1 Standard Tax Compliance Checks for Suitability and Monitoring Resolve open balances before you start; falling behind on your own taxes can hold up renewal.
The renewal also asks about data security. Paid preparers are covered by the FTC Safeguards Rule, which requires a written information security program appropriate to the size of your business and the sensitivity of the client data you handle.6Federal Trade Commission. FTC Safeguards Rule: What Your Business Needs to Know You will certify that a plan is in place. IRS Publication 4557 provides a framework for smaller firms that have not built one yet.
Pay the Fee and Consent to Circular 230
After the compliance questions, the system moves to payment. Enter your card or eCheck information and submit the $18.75. You will then consent to the practice obligations in Treasury Department Circular 230.7Internal Revenue Service. Office of Professional Responsibility and Circular 230 This is the federal regulation governing tax practice. By consenting, you agree to core duties like exercising due diligence in return preparation, promptly advising clients when you discover errors or omissions in prior filings, and avoiding conflicts of interest between clients.8eCFR. Subpart B Duties and Restrictions Relating to Practice Before the Internal Revenue Service Every preparer consents, and the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility can take disciplinary action against violations.
Confirmation
A successful payment produces an on-screen confirmation showing your PTIN active for the upcoming filing season. An email follows. If it does not arrive within 24 hours, log back in and check the dashboard; the on-screen status is what counts.
What Happens If You Prepare Returns Without a Current PTIN
Working without a valid PTIN carries real penalties. The IRS imposes $60 for each return or claim filed without a valid PTIN, capped at $31,500 annually. Those are the published figures for returns filed in calendar year 2025; 2026 amounts may be slightly higher once the IRS publishes its annual inflation adjustment.9Internal Revenue Service. Tax Preparer Penalties For a preparer filing hundreds of returns, that adds up quickly.
Beyond the fines, the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility can pursue disciplinary action, and the Department of Justice can seek a court injunction barring you from preparing returns at all.10Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions: Do I Need a PTIN? Violating an injunction can bring civil or criminal contempt sanctions, including further fines or incarceration.11Internal Revenue Service. Monitoring of Promoter/Preparer Injunctions (IRC 7407 and 7408)
Does PTIN Renewal Require Continuing Education?
No. Any paid preparer can renew a PTIN whether or not they have completed CE. CE comes into play only if you are an unenrolled preparer pursuing an Annual Filing Season Program Record of Completion, which is a separate voluntary program with its own 18-hour annual requirement completed by December 31.12Internal Revenue Service. Annual Filing Season Program Renewing your PTIN and earning an AFSP record are two different transactions.
If You Cannot Renew Online
The IRS accepts a paper renewal on Form W-12, but the timing is very different. Online renewal issues your PTIN immediately; a mailed Form W-12 takes approximately six weeks to process.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form W-12 A paper renewal dropped in the mail in December can still be processing well into February, leaving you unable to sign returns during the heart of filing season. Use the online system if you have internet access.
Common Snags
ID.me Verification
If ID.me cannot verify your identity through its automated check, you may need a video call with an ID.me agent. It adds time but usually resolves in one session. The “Forgot User ID” and “Forgot Password” links on the PTIN login page apply only to the legacy login used by preparers without a Social Security number.
Name Changes
If your legal name has changed since your last renewal through marriage, divorce, or a court order, you can update your PTIN account online or in writing. Acceptable supporting documents include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, court-ordered name change, certificate of naturalization or citizenship, Social Security card, or government-issued photo ID.14Internal Revenue Service. Update Your PTIN Account Information Updating your name on the PTIN account does not update it on your EFIN, EIN, or Enrolled Agent records; contact each program separately.
Preparers Without a Social Security Number
Foreign persons without a Social Security number must file Form 8946 with two current government-issued identity documents, at least one bearing a photograph. Acceptable documents include a passport, U.S. visa, foreign driver’s license, or USCIS documentation, and originals or notarized copies are required.15Internal Revenue Service. PTIN Supplemental Application for Foreign Persons Without a Social Security Number (Form 8946) A foreign preparer who resides outside the United States and obtains a PTIN without an SSN is not authorized to prepare U.S. returns for compensation.
Payment Declines and Timeouts
If a payment is declined, make sure the billing address you entered matches what your card issuer has on file. The system also times out when idle; log back in and continue. Neither affects your PTIN account.
