A charge labeled “Quill” on your credit or debit card statement comes from Quill.com, an online office supply retailer owned by Staples. If you don’t recognize the Quill credit card charge, it’s almost always one of three things: a product order someone placed on the site, the $99.99 annual renewal of a Rewards+ membership, or an installment payment through Zip, the buy-now-pay-later service Quill uses at checkout.
Because Quill keeps its own branding, the charge shows up as “Quill” rather than “Staples” even though the two are the same corporate family.1Staples. About Us Before assuming fraud, check with anyone who shares the card or the account. A coworker, business partner, or family member placing an office supply order is the single most common explanation.
What the Charge Is Likely To Be
A Product Order
Quill accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, GSA SmartPay, PayPal, and Click To Pay at checkout.2Quill.com. Payment Information It also stores payment information from previous transactions, so a card on file can be used as the default for later orders without the cardholder re-entering details.3Quill.com. Terms and Conditions If an order ships in multiple packages, PayPal users may see a separate charge for each shipment.
A Rewards+ Annual Renewal
Rewards+ is Quill’s paid loyalty program. It costs $99.99 per year, starts with a 60-day free trial, and renews automatically every 12 months from the original trial start date unless canceled.4Quill.com. Payment Information A $99.99 Quill charge appearing out of nowhere is often a Rewards+ renewal tied to a free trial someone signed up for months earlier and forgot.
A Zip Installment
Quill partners with Zip, which splits a purchase into four or eight installments charged to the linked card every two weeks.5Zip. Quill at Zip This means a Quill-related debit can hit your statement weeks after the original order, and the charge may appear as Zip rather than Quill. Zip also adds an origination fee of $0 to $124 depending on the plan and amount, and a late fee of up to $7 for missed payments.6NerdWallet. Zip Buy Now, Pay Later Review

If Quill doesn’t resolve it, you can dispute the charge with your card issuer. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, billing errors include unauthorized charges, charges for the wrong amount, and charges for items not delivered as agreed.9FTC. What To Do if You’re Billed for Things You Never Got or You Get Unordered Products Send a written dispute to the issuer’s billing-error address within 60 days of the statement date that first showed the charge. The issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles, up to 90 days.10California Office of the Attorney General. Credit Cards: Dispute a Charge You don’t have to pay the disputed amount or related finance charges while the investigation is open, but undisputed portions of the bill still need to be paid on time.
If the complaint is about a defective product or one that never arrived rather than a straight billing error, the “claims and defenses” rule may apply instead. It gives you up to one year from the first statement showing the charge, but the amount must exceed $50 and you must have first tried in good faith to resolve the problem with the seller.10California Office of the Attorney General. Credit Cards: Dispute a Charge These protections apply to credit cards. Debit card disputes carry different and generally weaker consumer protections.9FTC. One Thing a Credit Card Charge Is Not
Quill offers business customers a separate Net 30 billing option, giving qualified accounts 30 days to pay invoices with no interest. Net 30 invoices cannot be paid by credit card; they are settled by ACH bank payment or mailed check.11Quill.com. Quill Net 30 So if you see a Quill charge on your card, it did not come from a Net 30 invoice. It came from a checkout purchase, a Rewards+ renewal, or a Zip installment, and those are the three places to look.
