Quebec Tax Refund: Credits, Filing, and Timelines

A Quebec tax refund arrives after you file a TP-1 return with Revenu Québec showing that your source deductions, instalments, or refundable credits exceeded the provincial tax you actually owed for the year. Quebec runs its own tax system, so you file two returns each spring: one federal return with the Canada Revenue Agency and a separate provincial return with Revenu Québec.1Canada Revenue Agency. Quebec – 2025 Income Tax Package Where you lived on December 31 decides which province gets your provincial return, and if that was Quebec, the TP-1 is how you get any overpayment back.2Canada Revenue Agency. When to File and What Late Filing Costs

The filing deadline for the 2025 tax year is April 30, 2026. Self-employed filers and their spouses have until June 15, 2026, but any balance owed is still due April 30, so interest starts running May 1 regardless.3Revenu Québec. Late-Filing Penalties

If you owe money and file late, the penalty is 5% of the unpaid balance plus 1% for every full month the return is outstanding, capped at 12 months. A full year of delay reaches 17% of what you owe, with interest compounding daily on top.3Revenu Québec. Late-Filing Penalties Late filers who are owed a refund don’t pay a penalty on the refund itself, but they lose access to their own money and can miss Solidarity Tax Credit payments for the months tied to that return.

Refundable Credits That Grow Your Refund

Refundable credits pay out in cash even if you owe no tax. They’re the main reason a filer with modest income can receive more back than was ever withheld from their paycheque. Four credits do most of the work.

Solidarity Tax Credit

The Solidarity Tax Credit is a monthly payment offsetting housing costs and sales tax for low- and middle-income households, with up to three components: QST, housing, and a component for residents of northern villages.4Revenu Québec. Eligibility for the Solidarity Tax Credit You have to complete Schedule D with your TP-1 to receive the full amount; skip it and you’ll get only the basic QST amount and any spousal amount. Direct deposit registration is required for the claim to count as complete.5Revenu Québec. Claiming the Solidarity Tax Credit

Childcare Expense Tax Credit

Work Premium

For 2026, the work premium maximums are $1,207 for a person living alone, $1,882 for a couple without children, $3,122 for a single-parent family, and $4,057 for a couple with at least one child. An adapted version with higher amounts exists for recipients with a severe limitation on their capacity for employment, and a supplement of $200 per month is available for up to 12 consecutive months for workers who maintain continuous employment.8Revenu Québec. Home-Support Services for Seniors

If you were 70 or older on December 31, you can claim 40% of eligible home-support expenses, including meal preparation and delivery, nursing and personal care, housekeeping, snow removal, laundry, and medical alert systems. Turning 70 mid-year means only expenses for services provided on or after your birthday qualify.9Revenu Québec. Tax Credit for Home-Support Services for Seniors

What You Need Before You File

Your return is built on the TP-1-V form, available on the Revenu Québec website or through authorized tax software.10Revenu Québec. Income Tax Return, Schedules and Guide Gather every RL slip you received:

  • RL-1: employment income and deductions
  • RL-2: retirement and annuity income
  • RL-3: investment income (dividends, interest)
  • RL-16: trust income allocated to beneficiaries11Revenu Québec. RL-16 Slip – Trust Income

Most slips arrive by late February, but RL-15 and RL-16 slips don’t have to be sent to you until the end of March.12Revenu Québec. How to Complete Your Income Tax Return Every figure on your TP-1-V must match the corresponding slip. Mismatches are one of the fastest ways to trigger a manual review and stall your refund.

Confirm your Social Insurance Number, current address, and marital status. Enter your banking details in the direct deposit section if you want the refund sent electronically rather than by cheque. Direct deposit is faster, and it’s a requirement for the Solidarity Tax Credit claim to be considered complete.5Revenu Québec. Claiming the Solidarity Tax Credit

How to Submit Your Return

The fastest route is NetFile Québec, built into most authorized commercial tax software. You complete the return in the software, review the summary, and transmit it directly to Revenu Québec. A confirmation number appears on successful transmission and serves as proof of filing.13Revenu Québec. Filing Your Income Tax Return Online

If you file on paper, mail the completed return to one of two processing centres:14Revenu Québec. Filing Your Income Tax Return by Mail

  • Montréal: Revenu Québec, C. P. 2500, succursale Place-Desjardins, Montréal (Québec) H5B 1A3

Paper returns require manual data entry and take longer, with no instant confirmation. Certain income types and credit claims carry filing restrictions that force paper submission.13Revenu Québec. Filing Your Income Tax Return Online

When Your Refund Arrives

Revenu Québec aims to issue refunds within 14 days for online returns and within 28 days for paper returns.15Revenu Québec. Income Tax Refunds Processing doesn’t begin until early March, so filing in February doesn’t get you paid any earlier. For returns filed after March 31, Revenu Québec asks you to wait four weeks before making inquiries.16Revenu Québec. Line 478 – Refund

Track the return’s status through the My Account (Mon dossier) portal. It shows whether the return is still being processed, whether additional information is needed, or whether the refund has been issued. The process ends when you receive a Notice of Assessment, the official breakdown of your income, deductions, credits, and final refund or balance owing.

If Revenu Québec is late, interest accrues in your favour. The rate for the first two quarters of 2026 is 2.75%, capitalized daily.17Revenu Québec. Interest Rates on Refunds Refunds under $2 are not paid out.15Revenu Québec. Income Tax Refunds

Why Your Refund Might Be Smaller Than Expected

Revenu Québec can redirect your refund toward debts you owe the provincial government under a process called compensation, authorized by the Tax Administration Act.18Légis Québec. A-6.002 – Tax Administration Act Outstanding provincial tax from earlier years, defaulted government-guaranteed student loans, and unpaid amounts under other provincial programs get satisfied first. Only what’s left is deposited to your account.

Child support arrears receive the same treatment through the provincial support-payment collection system. The interception is automatic, so the amount actually deposited can be well below the refund figure calculated on your Notice of Assessment. If compensation reduced your refund, the notice or an accompanying letter explains which debts were paid.

If Your Notice of Assessment Is Wrong

You have 90 days from the date on the Notice of Assessment to file a formal objection with Revenu Québec, counted starting the day after the notice was issued. Individuals have an alternative deadline of one year after the filing due date for the year in question, whichever falls later. Miss both and your objection won’t be considered unless you apply in writing for an extension.19Revenu Québec. Time Limit for Filing a Notice of Objection

A denied objection can be appealed to the Court of Québec within 90 days of the decision.20Revenu Québec. Information on Judicial Recourse

Free Help If You Qualify

Revenu Québec’s Income Tax Assistance Volunteer Program prepares returns at no cost for people with modest incomes and simple tax situations. Suggested income limits are $40,000 for a person living alone and $55,000 for a couple or single parent, with an extra $5,000 per dependant beyond the first.21Revenu Québec. Are You Eligible for the Income Tax Assistance Program

A situation counts as simple if income comes from employment, pensions, government benefits, support payments, scholarships, or interest under $1,200. You don’t qualify if you’re self-employed with more than $1,000 in income, have rental or business income, own foreign property, sold a home, or have capital gains or losses.21Revenu Québec. Are You Eligible for the Income Tax Assistance Program Volunteer clinics run province-wide during tax season, and a missed credit or a forgotten Schedule D can easily cost more than the return itself.
