Projected COLA for Social Security: Estimates, Timing, and Medicare

The projected Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 falls somewhere between 3.3% and 4.7%, according to forecasts published in mid-2026. The Social Security Administration will announce the official figure on October 14, 2026, and the increase will show up in January 2027 benefit payments.1Yahoo Finance. 2027 Social Security COLA Announcement Whatever the number ends up being, it will be noticeably larger than the 2.8% adjustment currently in effect for 2026.2Social Security Administration. Where the 2027 Projections Stand

Several organizations track the monthly inflation data that feeds the COLA formula and publish running estimates. Their numbers have climbed sharply through the spring of 2026:

  • The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), a retiree advocacy group, moved from a 2.8% projection in January and February 2026 up to 3.9% in April and 3.8% in May. Its own COLA Watch page has since listed 3.3%.3Kiplinger. Social Security COLA 20274The Senior Citizens League. COLA Watch
  • Independent Social Security and Medicare analyst Mary Johnson projects 4.7% and has said there is “considerable likelihood” the final figure could go even higher depending on where gasoline prices settle during the third quarter.5CNBC. Social Security COLA 2027 Inflation Estimate

The spread reflects genuine uncertainty rather than disagreement about the math. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) rose 4.4% over the twelve months ending in May 2026.5CNBC. Why Summer 2026 Decides the Number

The COLA is set by a formula written into federal law in the early 1970s, not by administrative discretion.2Social Security Administration. Everything published before October is an estimate based on the trajectory of prices so far. Third-quarter CPI-W data is what matters.

What Is Pushing the Estimates Higher

Fuel is the biggest single factor. Over the twelve months through May 2026, fuel oil prices rose 64.1% and gasoline climbed 40.7%, driven in large part by disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz tied to the conflict involving Iran.5CNBC. Then came a partial reversal. By late June 2026, a U.S.-Iran deal to reopen the strait helped drop the national average to $3.86, more than 60 cents below the prior month.10AAA. If it rebounds, the number moves up. That is why Johnson has flagged fuel as the wildcard.

Tariffs have added their own pressure. A Federal Reserve analysis found that tariffs in place through February 2026 had already lifted core goods prices by 3.1%, with the pass-through to consumers largely complete.11Federal Reserve. What the Increase Would Mean in Dollars

The average monthly Social Security retirement benefit was roughly $2,079 in early 2026.15Kiplinger. What Is the Average Social Security Check by Age Applying the three scenarios:

  • At 3.3%, an increase of about $69 a month, taking the average to roughly $2,148.

The same percentage applies to Supplemental Security Income. The current maximum federal SSI payment is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple.16Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts A 3.8% adjustment would push those to roughly $1,032 and $1,548.

Who Else Gets the Same Adjustment

Military retirement pay and VA disability compensation use the same CPI-W-based formula, so the October announcement applies to those benefits too.7MOAA. Where Will Your COLA Land in 2027

Federal civilian retirees under the older Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) receive the full COLA. Retirees under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), which covers most workers hired after 1984, get a reduced version. If the COLA exceeds 3%, FERS retirees receive one percentage point less than the full amount. If it falls between 2% and 3%, they get a flat 2%.18National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. Up-to-Date Information A 3.8% COLA would translate to 2.8% for FERS annuitants. The Medicare Part B Offset

A bigger COLA does not automatically mean a bigger net check. Medicare Part B premiums are usually deducted straight from Social Security payments, and when premiums rise they absorb part of the raise. The Social Security Act’s “hold-harmless” provision keeps a Part B premium increase from exceeding the dollar amount of a beneficiary’s COLA increase, which protects most current enrollees from seeing their net payment drop.20Congressional Research Service. Medicare Part B Premiums and Social Security COLAs The protection does not apply to new enrollees, to high-income beneficiaries paying income-related surcharges (IRMAA), or to people whose premiums are paid by Medicaid. For those groups, a large Part B increase can eat a substantial share of any COLA.
