Progressive Lease PMTS on Bank Statement: Costs and Buyout Options

Progressive Lease payments on your bank statement are ACH withdrawals for a lease-to-own agreement you signed at a partner retailer, showing up with descriptors like “PROG LEASE,” “PROGRESSIVE LEASING,” or “PROG LEASING PMT.” They’ll keep hitting your account on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly schedule until you buy out the lease, finish all 12 months of payments, or return the merchandise. There are only two ways to stop them legitimately, and one of them saves you a lot of money if you act fast.

Why the Charge Shows Progressive Instead of the Store

The debit reflects the leasing company, not the store where you took the item home. Lease a laptop, sofa, or appliance through a partner retailer, and the withdrawal on your statement still reads Progressive Leasing. That’s what trips people up when they scan transactions and can’t place the charge.

These pulls are ACH debits from the checking or savings account you authorized during the application. They’re not credit card charges, and each one is a rental payment for continued use of the leased item. Your legal agreement is with Progressive Leasing, not with the retailer. The payment cadence matches the frequency you set up at signing.1Progressive Leasing. What Are My Early Purchase Options?

What the Lease Actually Costs

The 12-month lease-to-own total is significantly higher than the item’s cash price. Progressive discloses this figure in your welcome email and lease agreement, but it’s easy to miss when you’re focused on the per-payment amount.2Progressive Leasing. New Customer FAQ Ride the full term without exercising an early purchase option and you’ll pay the maximum.

Pull up that welcome email. It confirms your payment schedule, the 12-month total, and your buyout options. The gap between the cash price and the 12-month total is the cost of Progressive’s financing, and the fastest way to shrink it is the 90-day option.

The 90-Day Purchase Option Saves the Most

Within the first 90 days of your lease (three months in California), you can buy out the agreement by paying the item’s cash price plus whatever lease-to-own costs have accrued during that window.1Progressive Leasing. What Are My Early Purchase Options? After day 90, the buyout price climbs substantially.

One detail matters: you have to call Progressive Leasing to set up the 90-day buyout. It can’t be completed entirely through the online portal.2Progressive Leasing. New Customer FAQ If you’re seeing Progressive charges and you’re still inside that window, that call is the single most valuable thing you can do today.

Buying Out After the 90-Day Window

Past the 90-day mark, an early buyout option is still available for the rest of the 12-month term. The buyout amount is calculated as a percentage of your unpaid 12-month lease-to-own total, so it drops as you make more payments.1Progressive Leasing. What Are My Early Purchase Options? It won’t match the 90-day price, but it beats letting the lease run.

Call customer service to set up the payment plan. Once it’s arranged, you can pay through the MyAccount portal, or make a one-time payment online to clear the remaining balance in full.1Progressive Leasing. What Are My Early Purchase Options?

How to Stop the Charges Legitimately

Two ways end the debits: complete a buyout or return the item.

Finish a Buyout

Whether it’s the 90-day option or a later buyout, the mechanics are the same. You authorize a final payment, Progressive confirms the payoff, and the recurring ACH authorization terminates. Save the payoff confirmation. If a stray charge posts after the closure date, that letter is what your bank needs to reverse it. Statement updates usually catch up within one or two billing cycles.

Return the Merchandise

You can cancel the lease at any time by returning the items to Progressive Leasing. There’s no penalty for returning, and you owe nothing beyond the lease-to-own costs that accrued before the return.3Progressive Leasing. What if I Can No Longer Afford My Payments Call Progressive to schedule the return. Payments you’ve already made are generally non-refundable, because they covered your rental use. Once Progressive acknowledges receipt, the debits stop.

Why Blocking the Charge at Your Bank Isn’t Enough

A stop payment at your bank might block the next debit, but it doesn’t cancel your lease. You’d still owe the money, and Progressive would try to collect from any secondary payment method on file. If both fail, the account goes delinquent.4Progressive Leasing. 5Progressive Leasing. What if I Need to Stop a Payment

Longer nonpayment escalates. Progressive may report the delinquency to credit bureaus once a payment is 30 or more days past due. Unresolved accounts can be charged off and sent to third-party collections. Throughout that process, you keep the right to return the merchandise and owe nothing beyond the lease costs already accrued.3Progressive Leasing. What if I Can No Longer Afford My Payments If you’re falling behind, returning the item early is almost always better than letting the charges pile up.

On credit reporting more broadly, Progressive may report account information to consumer reporting agencies but isn’t required to. On-time payments won’t necessarily show as positive history even if you ask, while late payments, missed payments, and defaults may appear on your credit report.6Progressive Leasing. Disputing a Charge You Shouldn’t Owe

If Progressive debits your account after a completed buyout or return, or if you never authorized the lease in the first place, you can dispute the charge with your bank. Under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, you can report an unauthorized electronic debit within 60 days of the statement on which it first appears. Your bank can accept the dispute orally or in writing, though it may ask for written confirmation within 10 business days of an oral report. For unauthorized transfers, the burden falls on the financial institution to prove the transaction was authorized.7Federal Reserve. Error Resolution Procedures Under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act

Give your bank the payoff confirmation or return acknowledgment from Progressive. That documentation makes the dispute straightforward. If you believe your information was used fraudulently to open the lease, use the same dispute process with your bank, file a complaint with Progressive, and file one with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
