Pilot Vision Requirements: FAA Standards, Color, and Acuity

FAA pilot vision requirements are set out in 14 CFR Part 67, and the exact numbers depend on which class of medical certificate you hold. First-class (airline transport) and second-class (commercial) applicants face the strictest thresholds; third-class (private and recreational) applicants qualify with noticeably more relaxed standards. Corrective lenses count toward meeting the standard, and the FAA has pathways for pilots who can’t meet the numbers naturally.

Distance, Near, and Intermediate Acuity by Class

First-class and second-class certificates require distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better in each eye separately, with or without corrective lenses.1eCFR. 14 CFR 67.103 – Eye Third-class certificates require only 20/40 or better in each eye, with or without correction.2eCFR. 14 CFR 67.303 – Eye If glasses or contacts bring you to the required number, you pass, and your certificate is issued with a limitation requiring you to wear them while flying.

All three classes require near visual acuity of 20/40 or better at 16 inches in each eye.1eCFR. 14 CFR 67.103 – Eye2eCFR. 14 CFR 67.303 – Eye

First-class and second-class applicants age 50 and older face an added test: intermediate vision of 20/40 or better at 32 inches in each eye, roughly the arm’s-length reach to a cockpit instrument panel.3eCFR. 14 CFR 67.203 – Eye Third-class applicants have no intermediate vision requirement at any age.

Color Vision

All certificate classes require the ability to perceive the colors necessary for safe flight.1eCFR. 14 CFR 67.103 – Eye In practice, that means distinguishing the red, green, and white light-gun signals used by controllers and reading color-coded aeronautical charts. Failing the screening isn’t the end. The FAA offers an Operational Color Vision Test administered by an Aviation Safety Inspector at a Flight Standards District Office. It has two parts: identifying colors on aeronautical charts and correctly calling out light-gun signals from a control tower at 1,000 and 1,500 feet. You need a perfect score on the light-gun portion. Passing earns a Statement of Demonstrated Ability that stays with you permanently.

If you can’t pass any approved test, the FAA may still issue a restricted third-class certificate with the limitation “Not valid for night flying or by color signal control.” That grounds you after dark and out of situations requiring light-gun signals, but it lets you fly during the day under visual flight rules. Upgrading later to an unrestricted first or second-class certificate means passing one of the approved computerized tests.

Field of Vision

First-class and second-class certificates require “normal fields of vision.”5eCFR. 14 CFR 67.103 – Eye3eCFR. 14 CFR 67.203 – Eye The regulation doesn’t pin this to a specific degree measurement, leaving room for clinical judgment by the examiner. Third-class certificates have no explicit field-of-vision requirement in the regulation,2eCFR. 14 CFR 67.303 – Eye but any eye condition that interferes with normal function or could worsen over time can be disqualifying at any class.

Glasses, Contacts, and Sunglasses

If corrective lenses bring you to the required acuity, expect a limitation on your certificate requiring you to wear them during flight operations. Flying without your required correction is a certificate violation. Domestically, you’re not required to carry a backup pair. Internationally, ICAO standards require pilots to carry a spare set, and foreign authorities enforce this during ramp inspections.6Federal Aviation Administration. Monovision contact lenses, where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near, aren’t automatically approved because they compromise binocular depth perception. The FAA evaluates them case by case and may require additional depth-perception testing.

Polarized sunglasses are also discouraged in the cockpit. They can wash out LCD instrument displays and reduce the visibility of other aircraft with treated windshields.7Federal Aviation Administration. LASIK, PRK, and Other Refractive Surgery

The FAA accepts LASIK, PRK, and other refractive procedures as a way to meet vision standards. There’s no blanket mandatory waiting period. If your surgery was three or more months ago and you’ve fully recovered, been released from post-operative care, and stopped all related medications, your Aviation Medical Examiner can evaluate you in the office and issue the certificate as long as you meet the acuity standard for your class and have no lingering symptoms like glare, halos, or poor night vision.8Federal Aviation Administration. Within three months of surgery, the examiner reviews a status summary form completed by your surgeon. Assuming everything looks good and you meet the standards, the certificate can still be issued.9Federal Aviation Administration. Your treating eye doctor needs to document in writing that vision has stabilized and you’re free of side effects before you return to flight duty.

Flying With Vision in One Eye

Pilots with vision in only one eye, or whose worse eye can’t be corrected beyond 20/200, are considered monocular by FAA standards. Monocularity reduces effective field of vision by roughly 30 percent, and that narrows further at higher speeds.10Federal Aviation Administration. Monocular applicants aren’t automatically disqualified. Certification for any class is available through the Special Issuance process under 14 CFR 67.401. The FAA recommends a six-month adaptation period after vision loss to develop reliable monocular depth cues.10Federal Aviation Administration. Guide for Aviation Medical Examiners – Monocular Vision If your monocular status results from refractive surgery rather than actual vision loss, you may be certificated as long as you have corrective lenses available that restore binocular vision to the required standards.

If You Don’t Meet the Standard: SODA and Special Issuance

Failing the vision portion of the exam doesn’t necessarily ground you. There are two pathways.

A Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) applies when your disqualifying condition is static or nonprogressive. You complete a practical flight test administered through a Flight Standards District Office, and if you show the deficiency doesn’t impair safe flying, the Federal Air Surgeon grants the SODA. It doesn’t expire. For conditions that may change over time, the FAA issues a time-limited Authorization for Special Issuance. This lets you fly while the agency monitors the condition through periodic medical reports. When the authorization period ends, you’ll need to demonstrate to the Federal Air Surgeon again that you can still perform safely. BasicMed for Private Pilots

Private pilots who once held an FAA medical certificate may qualify to fly under BasicMed instead of maintaining a third-class medical. Under BasicMed, your personal physician performs a comprehensive exam using the FAA’s Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist, which covers distant, near, and intermediate vision, field of vision, color vision, and ocular alignment.13Federal Aviation Administration. BasicMed carries operational limits: no flying above 18,000 feet, no aircraft authorized for more than six passengers, and no flying outside the United States.

How Often Vision Gets Rechecked

Vision is retested every time you renew, so the renewal interval sets how often the FAA looks at your eyes. First-class privileges last 12 months if you’re under 40 and 6 months if you’re 40 or older. Second-class privileges last 12 months at any age. Third-class privileges last 60 months under 40 and 24 months at 40 or older.
