A PayPal Visa Direct charge on your card statement is almost always one of three things: a purchase you made through PayPal, a $1.95 temporary hold PayPal uses to verify a newly linked card, or an instant transfer PayPal pushed to your debit card using Visa’s real-time payment network. The statement descriptor itself will typically reference PayPal rather than the words “Visa Direct,” even when Visa Direct is the underlying rail.
How the Charge Reads on Your Statement
A card purchase funded through PayPal generally appears as PayPal *SELLER NAME, with the seller’s business name after the asterisk. PayPal asks merchants to keep that name short and free of special characters so customers can recognize it.1PayPal. How Do I Update My Business Name on Customers’ Credit Card Statements If the payment was funded from a bank transfer rather than a card, the descriptor changes to the generic PAYPALINST XFER with no merchant name.2PayPal. Your bank ultimately controls exactly how the descriptor renders, so the same PayPal transaction can look slightly different from one issuer to the next.3PayPal. Transaction Descriptors
The $1.95 Card Verification Hold
If the charge is exactly $1.95, it’s almost certainly PayPal’s card confirmation process. When you link a new credit or debit card to a PayPal account, PayPal places a temporary $1.95 charge on it.4PayPal. How Do I Confirm My Credit or Debit Card With PayPal The statement description contains a four-digit code, formatted as PayPal*1234 CODE or PP*1234 CODE. You enter that code in your PayPal Wallet to prove you control the card.5PayPal. Where Do I Find the PayPal Code to Confirm My Card
The code appears within minutes on online statements that show pending transactions; otherwise it takes two to three business days. Once you confirm the card, PayPal refunds the $1.95 immediately, though your card issuer may take up to 30 days to post the credit. If you never confirm the card, the charge is automatically refunded after 75 days.5PayPal. Where Do I Find the PayPal Code to Confirm My Card
Instant Transfers Routed Through Visa Direct
Visa Direct is Visa’s real-time “push” payment platform, which sends funds directly to a card rather than pulling them the way a merchant purchase does.6Visa. Visa Direct PayPal uses Visa Direct as one of the rails behind its Instant Transfer feature, which moves money from a PayPal balance to a linked debit card in roughly 30 minutes. PayPal launched debit card instant transfers in the United States in June 2017 over the Visa Direct and Mastercard Send networks.7Digital Transactions. PayPal Extends Faster Funds Availability With Instant Transfers to Users’ Bank Accounts
Your statement will not usually say “Visa Direct.” Visa’s merchant data standards require the descriptor to show the originator’s name (in this case, PayPal), and the specific formatting rules for Visa Direct’s Original Credit Transactions don’t require the “Visa Direct” label to appear.8Visa. Visa Merchant Data Standards Manual So a PayPal instant transfer arriving over Visa Direct still shows up on your statement as a PayPal entry.
Fees You May Have Been Charged
PayPal charges 1.75% of the amount for an instant transfer to an eligible debit card or bank account, with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum of $25.00 per transaction.9PayPal. PayPal Consumer Fees Per-transaction limits are $5,000 for card-based transfers with a $15,000 monthly cap, and $25,000 for bank account transfers. A standard withdrawal to a bank account is free but slower.
If you sent money to friends or family with a credit card rather than a balance or bank account, PayPal charges 2.90% plus a fixed fee. Your credit card issuer may also treat that transaction as a cash advance, which adds a fee of roughly 3 to 5% and a higher interest rate with no grace period.10PayPal. Do I Get Charged a Cash Advance Fee When Using My Debit or Credit Card to Make a Payment PayPal has no control over that issuer fee.
Disputing a Charge You Don’t Recognize
Before disputing, PayPal recommends checking whether the charge is a family member’s purchase, a recurring subscription or automatic payment, or the $1.95 verification hold. You can review and cancel automatic payments in PayPal under Settings, then Payments, then Automatic Payments.11PayPal. How Do I Report an Unauthorized Transaction or Account Activity
If the charge is genuinely unauthorized, report it through PayPal’s Resolution Center within 180 days of the transaction date. Log in at paypal.com/disputes, select “Report a problem,” pick the transaction, and choose “I want to report unauthorized activity.” PayPal emails an update within 10 days, and if the transaction is confirmed as unauthorized, PayPal refunds the amount and you are not held liable.12PayPal. Unauthorized Transactions
Disputes involving a PayPal Debit Card work differently. Opening a fraud dispute on that card requires canceling it, and PayPal issues a replacement with a new number, expiration date, and CVV. Any recurring payments tied to the old card have to be updated by hand.13PayPal. How Do I Open a Dispute for a PayPal Debit Card Transaction
Refund Timing
A refund on a PayPal transaction funded by a debit or credit card generally takes up to five business days to show on the card, though some issuers can take up to 30 days to post the credit.14PayPal. Where Is My Refund If PayPal cannot return the money to the original card for any reason, it goes to your PayPal balance instead. The bank reference ID in your PayPal Activity log lets your bank trace the refund on their side.
