Passport Visa Pages: Blank Page Rules and Renewal Options

A U.S. passport visa pages count depends on which book you were issued: the current standard passport book has 26 pages, and the large book has 50. Both are printed under the Next Generation Passport design the State Department introduced in 2021. If your passport predates that rollout, the older ePassport books hold 28 pages (standard) or 52 pages (large).1U.S. Department of State. Not every page in the book is usable for stamps and adhesive visas. Several are taken up by the data page, endorsements, and other administrative content, so a 26-page book gives you noticeably fewer than 26 blank visa pages. The large book roughly doubles the space available for entry and exit stamps.

The large book costs nothing extra. If you travel internationally more than once or twice a year, check the “Large Book” box at the top of your application form. There is no downside beyond a slightly thicker passport.3U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail

The State Department has announced plans to move to a single 38-page book with its Series B redesign, expected around 2028. That change would end the standard-versus-large choice and give most travelers more visa space than today’s standard book.2Federal Register. How Many Blank Pages Countries Require for Entry

Many countries require one, two, or three blank visa pages in your passport when you arrive. The exact number depends on the destination, and border officials enforce the rule strictly. A multi-country itinerary can burn through pages fast: three stops that each require two blank pages means six or more free pages for one trip.

Requirements shift, so check the State Department’s country-specific travel information before you book. As a rough guide, Indonesia, India, and South Africa commonly require at least two blank pages, while many European and Asian destinations require one. Some countries specify that the blanks must be labeled visa pages, not endorsement or amendment pages.

Airlines check before you ever reach the border. Carriers face fines from foreign governments when they transport passengers who fail entry requirements, so gate agents look at your passport. If you don’t meet a destination’s blank-page rule, the airline can refuse to board you, and you’ll be scrambling for an expedited replacement with no guarantee of making the trip.

You Can’t Add Extra Pages Anymore

The State Department used to sew a 24-page insert into your existing passport when it filled up. That service ended on January 1, 2016, and there is no replacement for it.4Federal Register. Elimination of Visa Page Insert Service for U.S. Passport Book Holders Today, once your book runs out of space, your only option is to apply for a brand-new passport, even if the expiration date is years away. That is why the initial book-size choice matters so much for frequent travelers.

Getting a New Passport When Yours Is Full

A full passport is replaced through the standard renewal process. You have three possible paths.

Renewing by Mail

You can renew by mail using Form DS-82 if your most recent passport meets all of these conditions:

  • Issued within the last 15 years
  • Issued when you were 16 or older
  • Not damaged beyond normal wear and tear
  • Never reported lost or stolen
  • In your current legal name, or you can document the change with a marriage certificate or court order

Check the “Large Book” box on the DS-82 unless you have a reason not to. Send your current passport with the application; the State Department cancels it and returns it separately after your new book ships.3U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail

Renewing Online

Online renewal is faster and doesn’t require mailing your passport in. To qualify, you must be 25 or older, hold a 10-year book that is expiring within one year or expired less than five years ago, not be changing your name or other personal information, be located in a U.S. state or territory when you submit, and not be traveling within six weeks (only routine processing is available online). You’ll upload a digital photo and pay by credit or debit card.5U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport Online

One catch: you can only renew the type of passport you already hold. To add a passport card to a book (or vice versa), you have to use the mail process.

Applying in Person

If you don’t qualify for either mail-in or online renewal, you apply in person using Form DS-11 at an acceptance facility such as a post office or county clerk’s office. That route adds a $35 acceptance facility fee on top of the passport fee.6U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees

Children Under 16

A child’s full passport cannot be replaced by mail or online. Regardless of the reason for renewal, children under 16 must apply in person using Form DS-11, and both parents or guardians have to be present at the acceptance facility to give consent.7U.S. Department of State. Fees and Processing Time

An adult passport book renewal costs $130, whether by mail or online. Standard processing takes four to six weeks from the day the State Department receives your application, and that window does not include mailing time in either direction. Expedited processing costs an additional $60 and cuts turnaround to two to three weeks, again not counting mail transit.8U.S. Department of State. If your trip is less than three weeks away, make an appointment at a regional passport agency or center. With proof of imminent travel, same-day or next-day issuance is sometimes possible. And if your passport fills up while you’re already abroad, you can apply for a replacement at any U.S. embassy or consulate, though in most countries you’ll need to appear in person, and appointment availability varies widely by location.10U.S. Department of State.
