To expedite a U.S. passport, pay the $60 expedite fee on top of your application costs. That drops processing from the routine 4-to-6-week window down to 2 to 3 weeks by mail. If you’re leaving the country within 14 days, you can skip the mail entirely and book an in-person appointment at a regional passport agency, where most travelers walk out with a passport the same day or within 24 hours.1U.S. Department of State. Which route is right depends on how many days you have before departure, whether you’re a first-time applicant or renewing, and whether anything on your record could block issuance.
How Fast Expedited Service Actually Is
The State Department’s quoted processing times cover only the days your application sits at a passport agency or center. Mail transit is separate. Applications can take up to two weeks to reach the processing center, and another two weeks to come back to you after printing.2U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passports Counting only processing time is how people miss flights.
- Routine service: 4 to 6 weeks of processing, plus up to 4 weeks of combined mailing. Realistic total: 6 to 10 weeks.
- Expedited by mail: 2 to 3 weeks of processing. With paid fast return delivery, plan for 4 to 5 weeks total.
- In person at a passport agency: same day or within 24 hours for qualifying travelers.
If you’re mailing an expedited application, pay the extra $22.05 for 1-to-3-day return delivery. Without it, your finished passport rides the standard mail stream back to you, which can add a week or more to the back end.1U.S. Department of State. How to Get My U.S. Passport Fast

How to Submit an Expedited Application
By Mail
Write “EXPEDITE” clearly on the outside of your envelope so it lands in the faster processing queue. Ship it with a trackable service like Priority Mail Express, since your envelope contains proof of citizenship. Include a check or money order covering the application fee, the $60 expedite fee, and the $22.05 for fast return delivery. Do not include a prepaid return envelope; the State Department uses its own delivery service on the way back.1U.S. Department of State. How to Get My U.S. Passport Fast
In Person at a Passport Agency
Book your appointment through the State Department’s online scheduling system. Bring every required document, your travel proof, and a credit or debit card for payment. Staff review the file on-site, and most agencies issue the passport the same day or within 24 hours.4U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency
Documents in Both Cases
First-time applicants, applicants under 16, and anyone who doesn’t qualify for renewal by mail use Form DS-11. Renewal-eligible applicants use Form DS-82.6U.S. Department of State. Passport Forms Your passport photo must be 2 by 2 inches with a white or off-white background, taken within the last six months. Glasses come off unless you have a signed note from your doctor explaining a medical need.7U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Photos Photo rejections are a common reason applications stall, so get the photo right the first time. Most drug stores and shipping stores can take a compliant one for a few dollars.
Online Renewal Won’t Help You Move Faster
The State Department offers online passport renewal, but only for routine processing. You cannot expedite online.8U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport Online To expedite a renewal, mail in Form DS-82 with the expedite fee or take an in-person appointment.
Expediting a Passport for a Child
Children under 16 must apply in person on Form DS-11, and at least one parent must appear with the child and sign the application. The State Department strongly prefers both parents attend.9USAGov. Get a Passport for a Minor Under 18 If one parent can’t be there, that parent completes Form DS-3053 (Statement of Consent), which generally needs to be notarized. If the absent parent can’t be located, the applying parent files Form DS-5525 explaining the circumstances.
The expedite fee and tiers work the same for minors. What eats the time is logistics: coordinating both parents’ schedules, getting the child to an acceptance facility, and notarizing a consent form. Start early. Discovering two weeks before a flight that you need a notarized form from an ex-spouse is exactly how expedited processing turns into a scramble.
Replacing a Lost or Stolen Passport in a Hurry
Report a lost or stolen passport to the State Department immediately using Form DS-64, either online, by phone at 1-877-487-2778, or by mail.10USAGov. Lost or Stolen Passports Once reported, that passport is permanently invalidated. Even if it turns up later, you can’t use it.
Replacement requires applying in person on Form DS-11 as a first-time applicant, which means the full $130 application fee, the $35 acceptance facility fee, and the $60 expedite fee if you need speed.3U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees If you’re abroad, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, which can issue a limited-validity emergency passport when there isn’t time for the full replacement process.
Private Courier Services
Private expediting companies physically carry your application to a regional processing center for you. They have no authority to approve or issue passports; only the State Department does.11U.S. Department of State. Courier and Expeditor Companies Their service fee is separate from the $60 government expedite fee and the base application cost, typically running from $100 to over $500 depending on turnaround. You still gather every document yourself, and first-time applicants still have to visit an acceptance facility to have DS-11 executed before the courier can submit it. This route mainly makes sense if you can’t take a day to sit at a passport agency yourself.
Debts That Can Stop Expediting Cold
Two kinds of unpaid debt can prevent the State Department from issuing your passport at all, no matter how much you pay to speed things up.
Seriously delinquent federal tax debt is the first. If you owe more than $66,000 in overdue federal taxes (including penalties and interest), the IRS can certify your debt to the State Department, which then denies or revokes your passport. The threshold adjusts annually for inflation.12Internal Revenue Service. Revocation or Denial of Passport in Cases of Certain Unpaid Taxes Paying off the balance, entering an installment agreement, or successfully challenging the amount owed clears the certification.
Unpaid child support is the second. If you owe $2,500 or more, you are not eligible for a U.S. passport.13U.S. Department of State. Passports and Child Support Debt State enforcement agencies report these debts federally. Paying the balance below $2,500 or reaching an acceptable payment arrangement is typically required before the hold is lifted.
Discovering either of these blocks after paying for expedited service and booking a nonrefundable flight is a bad day. If there’s any chance you owe on either count, check before you apply.
